Friends of the South Grey Museum Speaker Series 2022: Barbara Rusch, “Two Queens, Two Reigns: A Singular Purpose”
October 19 @ 7:00 pm
The Friends of the South Grey Museum invite you to the Speakers Series 2022, developed and hosted by Barry Penhale. As someone with an interest in the Museum and its programs, you know how much we have all missed many activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, including our series of talks. We decided to welcome our supporters back to a virtual series for 2022, offered as webinars via Zoom with another eight programs, occurring as usual on the third Wednesday of each month, April to November, at 7:00 pm.
The Museum being no longer available as a host site, and with the continuing threat of COVID, going virtual was the obvious solution. Moving to a virtual delivery brings with it some additional costs, so we have made this a subscription series, but we’ve kept the usual at-the-door cost as a household fee of $10 per session. We are grateful to the Municipality of Grey Highlands for continuing their support for the presenters.
Fittingly, in the year of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the renowned collector of Victoriana, Barbara Rusch, will join us in a tribute to two record-setting monarchs. Over a span of some 40 years she has become widely-known for her dedication to the preservation of historically important objects. Today, Barbara is a recognized Sherlock Holmes and Houdini expert, as well as having assembled the largest collection of Queen Victoria artifacts in Canada. A recent Toronto Star feature article quoted her as saying: “That’s what I consider my mission in life: to resurrect those voices, to tell their stories.” In some ways, the reigns of Queen Elizabeth II, now in its 70th record-setting year, and that of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria have run along parallel lines. Both ascended to the throne at a tender age and lived to celebrate significant milestones, enjoying happy marriages to their cousins. What few know is that both survived assassination attempts and home invasions within the palace walls. Barbara will reveal these and other little-known facts about these popular and long-lived royal women. Don’t miss this master storyteller whose reputation as a lively enthusiastic presenter has few equals.
