Hastings County Historical Society (Virtual): Sir Mackenzie Bowell: A Canadian Prime Minister Forgotten by History
February 23, 2022 @ 3:00 pm
Author Barry Wilson will talk about his book on Sir Mackenzie Bowell.
In the 155 years since Confederation, Canada has been led by just 23 prime ministers and 19th Century Belleville newspaper owner Mackenzie Bowell was one of them. He also became the first and one of the few prime ministers to be forced from office by disgruntled dissidents in his own Conservative party and caucus. That incident has saddled Bowell with the image of one of Canadian history’s losers when he is mentioned in history at all, a subject for ridicule and neglect by historians but his life of accomplishment and a half century in Parliament before his 1917 death was anything but a failure.
The real Sir Mackenzie Bowell was much more accomplished and interesting than his portrayal, a significant player in Canadaʼs early years and a stalwart in successive John A. Macdonald governments.
Barry Wilson enjoyed a 44-year career in Canadian journalism, writing for newspapers in New Brunswick, Ontario and Saskatchewan before spending 34 years in the Canadian Parliamentary Press Gallery covering agricultural issues in Canada and around the world for the Saskatoon based Western Producer newspaper. He is a member of the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame.
