Peterborough Historical Society Public Lecture: “Entertaining the Prince of Wales, Cobourg 1860”

September 19 @ 7:30 pm

At age 18, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, undertook the first Royal Tour to Canada. Among his stops in Canada West were Cobourg, Hiawatha First Nation, Peterborough and Port Hope. The community of Cobourg provided elaborate entertainment for the Prince at the official opening of the architecturally stunning Victoria Hall. George Parker, an expert in Architectural Science, is active in the Cobourg heritage community and will provide a lively account of Cobourg’s reception of the Prince of Wales and of controversy that surrounded the Prince’s visit to Canada West.

Tuesday, September 19, 2023, Lion’s Community Centre, 347 Burnham Street, 7:30 p.m. All welcome.

On a related theme, don’t miss the current exhibit at the Peterborough Museum and Archives, “To Honour and Respect: Gifts from the Michi Saagiig Women to the Prince of Wales 1860,” which features the birchbark baskets gifted to the Prince when he visited Hiawatha.
