Historical Society of Ottawa Speaker Series : Jos Montferrand – Roi des forêts de l’Outaouais ou piler de taverne?

October 4 @ 1:00 pm

Guest Speaker: Michel Prévost, renowned regional historian, heritage advocate, Outaouais Historical Society President, and recipient of several scholarships

The Ottawa Valley has the privilege of being associated with a legendary figure whose fame goes far beyond the region’s borders. This folklore giant spent half his life here, attracted by the forestry industry. He became a lumberjack, log driver, site foreman, and master raftsman. This presentation will demystify him by exploring the different facets of this larger-than-life character. Come discover his exploits, including the famous battle on the Union (Chaudières) Bridge where he alone beat more than 150 Shiners, strong-arm Irishmen. Finally, we will demonstrate that there are still many traces of him in our folklore, toponymy, and monuments.

Admission is free. All are welcome to attend.

Please note: this presentation will be conducted in French.
