DESCRIPTION:The Thunder Bay Museum and Age BIG invite you to be a volunteer storyteller in our legacy project “PLACES & FACES:  Gathering Older Adults’ Stories of Connecting\, Belonging\, Placemaking in Thunder Bay”. \nWhat is the Project? \nWe are seeking applications from 7 older adults who want to share a story about a favourite place you sought out during the pandemic or a meaningful place that you enjoy today. Each storyteller will produce a 2-4-minute multimedia video called a digital story. \nOur Age BIG team has spearheaded the GIANTs digital project story series. Thunder Bay older adults 58 to 98 created digital stories that have been seen in classrooms and at conferences around the world. To view the GIANTs stories go to http://www.storycentre.ca/giants-thunder-bay \nPLACES & FACES storytellers will meet other interesting people and make memories! Your video\, with your permission\, will be showcased by the Thunder Bay Museum to help others consider seeking out places that help them connect in their community. \nYou can also participate in this exciting project by submitting a poem\, short story (300 words or less) or recipe that speaks to a meaningful place in your life. \nWhat is the focus of PLACES & FACES? \nOur goal is for storytellers to focus on unconventional places that have helped you foster a sense of connection and belonging to your community. This project will compile stories that will inspire peers and educate younger people about how to connect focusing on place. With senior’s centers and other facilities closing during the pandemic\, we heard many stories about how older adults engaged in placemaking to overcome barriers to social connection\, so stories may include places like: \n–Online: people who have connected to new friends using technology; \n–Grocery store: the solo-living person who engages with shoppers/employees; \n–Portable chair: a person who sets up their chair in a park to chat to people; \n–Laundry room: the person who strikes up conversation with neighbours in the laundry room in their building; \n–Neighbourhood: the neighbour who opened her apartment door to play the piano for her neighbours to listen from their apartments\, or a walking route that you discovered in your area; \n–Historic places:  a building that a person worked in or lived in like the former Eaton’s store\, a municipal outdoor pool that you helped to build\, or a hospital where your children were born. \nWhat is Placemaking? \nPlacemaking is often concerned with planning\, designing\, and managing “public spaces in ways that promote people’s health\, happiness\, and well-being.”  Emerging research is now focusing on placemaking as ways that people “transform physical spaces into socially relevant and meaningful places.”  Through this storytelling project\, we hope to capture stories that highlight how older adults in Thunder Bay are actively creating and negotiating their sense of place as they age. \nWhat is the goal of PLACES & FACES? \nPLACES & FACES is to celebrate and learn from the storytellers by giving you a platform to share.  We’ll gather and share your stories to inspire others\, young and old alike\, to find or create places and connections that matter.  We’ll help you ever step of the way but the final story that you choose to share is your story. \nWhat do I do during the Digital Storytelling Workshop? \nYou’ll attend a 3-day in-person session from December 1 to 3rd at the Thunder Bay Museum\, 425 Donald Street East where you will participate in story circles and with the help of our facilitator and fabulous coaches\, you will make a personal 3-minute (300 word) video using photos\, a script (approximately 250-300 word script)\, and perhaps music and/or sounds. You do not need to have any computer experience to take part! Meals will be provided. There is no cost to participate. \nI’m Interested! DESCRIPTION:Please join the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society for a lecture from Oula Seitsonen\, chair in Finnish Studies at Lakehead University\, 2022‑2023. This will be a in-person event that is free to view. The lecture will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in-person and recorded and posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date.   \nCLICK HERE TO VIEW THE WEBINAR\nFinnish-Canadian homestead research in the footsteps of archaeologist Sakari Pälsi \nThis lecture describes ongoing contemporary archaeological research on the material heritage of Finnish-Canadian immigrants and on retracing the footsteps of Finnish archaeological pioneer Sakari Pälsi who traveled across Canada in 1927. In October 2022\, my Canadian colleagues and I carried out archaeological\, ethnographic\, and anthropological work at a Finnish homestead in Tarmola\, Gorham Township\, where the great-grandparents of my colleague Meaghan Peuramäki-Brown lived since 1924. This work will be the Canadian part of our cross-Atlantic co-operation: in tandem with the fieldwork at the Kainulainen homestead in Tarmola\, we will study their ancestral farm in eastern Finland. Material culture approach to recent past historical events can reveal new and unexpected perceptions of seemingly familiar subjects\, like everyday lives and foodways\, and even such unanticipated issues as folk magic and beliefs\, as suggested already by our preliminary work. Besides the archaeological work in Tarmola\, I have retraced the travels of famous Finnish archaeologist Sakari Pälsi and his wife across Canada 95 years ago; I have earlier followed Pälsi’s wide-ranging travels in Finland\, Russia\, and Mongolia. On the trip from Quebec to Vancouver Island and back Pälsi visited Finnish communities and homesteads\, logging sites\, bush camps\, and mines\, and documented the lifeways of immigrants and the landscapes that they lived in. Port Arthur\, the “great city of Finns”\, was one of Pälsi’s main destinations on his journey. I have revisited and re-documented most of the locations along Pälsi’s trail\, and also returned his photographs to the local museums along the way. Sakari Pälsi’s insightful ethnographic notes and photographs provide also relevant background material for our multidisciplinary work at the Kainulainen homestead in Tarmola. \nSpeaker Bio \nOula Seitsonen (Sakarin-Pentin Ilarin Oula) is a chair in Finnish Studies at Lakehead University\, 2022‑2023. He is an archaeologist and geographer at the University of Oulu\, Finland\, and his research interests cover a wide range of themes\, both temporally and geographically\, from the archaeology of early pastoralism in Fennoscandia (Sápmi)\, Mongolia\, and East Africa\, to traces of the 21st-century refugee crises. At Lakehead\, he is pursuing a project on the material heritage of Finnish immigrants. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society for a lecture from George Romick on POW art.  This will be a in-person event that is free to view.  The lecture will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in-person and recorded and posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date.   \nCLICK HERE TO VIEW THE WEBINAR\nIn conjunction with the exhibit partnership between the Thunder Bay Museum and the Thunder Bay Military Museum to display arts and crafts of World War II prisoners-of-war\, this lecture will discuss the story of German submariner Georg Hoegel and his diverse artwork created while interned at POW camps in England\, Northwestern Ontario and Alberta. \nSpeaker Bio: \nGeorge Romick has been the Director and Curator of the Thunder Bay Military Museum since 2010 and has revamped the complete museum to bring it up to modern display requirements. He has a vast knowledge of military history and military items\, including the Military History of Northwestern Ontario and the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment. He is also the Vice President of the Organizations of Military Museums of Canada (OMMC)\, which is a national organization for the promotion of military museums in Canada.  He is also a member of the Honours & Awards Committee\, the Governance Committee of the OMMC and assisted with the 2022 OMMC Studies Program in Sackville\, New Brunswick. George joined the Canadian Armed Forces reserves in 1975 and progressed through the ranks from Private to Chief Warrant Officer\, then taking his Commission to Captain. He presently a Captain with the Canadian Instructor Cadre\, with 2294 18(Thunder Bay) Service Battalion Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps\, where he has been the Commanding Officer and is presently the Administrative Officer. He will be retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces at the end of January 2023\, just shy of 47 years of service. \nFree Museum Admission during the event. Refreshments will be available.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Thunder Bay Museum on Tuesday\, Nov. 15\, 2022 at 7:30 PM to watch some exciting recently digitized historical newsreel film with us. \nThe Thunder Bay Museum\, Friends of the Finnish Labour Temple\, and ShebaFilms presents: \nReel Memories of the Lakehead: News from the Giant \nThe Reel Memories of the Lakehead project was a partnership between the Thunder Bay Museum\, Friends of the Finnish Labour Temple\, and ShebaFilms. News from the Giant is a series of 8 short vignettes from the Thunder Bay (formerly Port Arthur and Fort William) and Northwestern Ontario region. These vignettes replicate the year-end highlight reels\, that news stations and movie theaters of the day used to show\, reviewing major events of the year. The newsreel film was originally donated to the Thunder Bay Museum by Fraser Dougall and spans from approximately 1958-1978. These vignettes represent a small portion of a very large collection of 16mm film that has been cleaned\, spliced\, and digitized for academic and public use. \nFree Museum Admission during the event. Eladia has worked in architecture since 2002\, founded Smoke Architecture as principal architect in 2014\, teaches as a Master Lecturer at Laurentian’s McEwen School of Architecture\, and serves as a founding member of RAIC’s Indigenous Task Force. Eladia represented Canada at the 2018 Venice Biennale Unceded exhibition as part of an international team of Indigenous designers and architects. Laxer graduated with his B.A. in History and Music from the University of Alberta and went on to study histories of music and sound in the fur trade for his M.A. at York University and Ph.D. at the University of Toronto. This will be an in-person and virtual event. \nThis event will be recorded for rebroadcast later. \nAuthors of Mining Country: A History of Canada’s Mines and Miners Arn Keeling and John Sandlos will be chatting about the history of mining in Canada and how the industry has shaped the country. There are countless mining towns across Canada and each one has played an important role in mining history. Arn and John will talk specifically about how mining in northern Ontario has shaped both local and national history. \nJohn Sandlos is a professor of history at Memorial University of Newfoundland\, with a research focus on the history of abandoned mines in Northern Canada. He is the author of Hunters at the Margin and co-editor (with Arn Keeling) of Mining and Communities in Northern Canada: History\, Politics\, Memory. He lives in St. John’s\, Newfoundland and Labrador. \nArn Keeling is a professor of geography at Memorial University of Newfoundland. His research examines the environmental legacies of abandoned mines\, mine closure and remediation\, and the social issues surrounding environmental contamination and its effects on northern Indigenous communities. He co-directed the Toxic Legacies Project with John Sandlos\, conducting community-engaged research on the history and legacy of Giant Mine. SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum (In-Person and Virtual) Lecture: Mark Scharf - Child of Holocaust Survivors
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Society for this in-person and virtual event that is free to view.  The lecture will be broadcast live via MS Teams.    \nThis lecture is being presented in support of the traveling exhibit  “And in 1948\, I came to Canada”: The Holocaust in Six Dates  on display at the Thunder Bay Museum from April 6th until June 26th 2022. \nMark Scharf will be discussing his parents’ experiences during the Holocaust and how they managed to survive; including help by gentile friends and neighbours\, and in his father’s case\, initiative in convincing a large number of his family to join him to live in the forest. He will also be discussing the Holocaust’s impact on the children of Holocaust survivors\, including his own experiences. \nBio: \nMark Scharf was born October 10\,1945 in a Displaced Persons camp in Germany. Lived in Poland till 1950 when my family moved to Israel\, and in 1953 moved from Israel to Canada. \nGraduated from the University of Toronto Law School in spring of 1971 after undergraduate studies there. During my undergraduate years I also received a Commission in the Canadian Army through the C.O.T.C. (Canadian Officers Training Corps). Married Joanne Cohen on August 21\, 1971 and celebrated 50th wedding anniversary in August 2021. Called to the bar of the Law Society of Upper Canada (now the Law Society of Ontario) in March of 1973. \nMoved to Barrie Ontario in 1974 and opened solo law office. The practice evolved over time so that my practice became primarily a civil litigation one with a good dose of family law. Two daughters\, Sara and Deborah\, were born in the early years in Barrie \nI became active in community work and among other activities the most significant were my 9 years on the Barrie Hospital Board and four years on the Barrie Police Services Board. I was Chairman of the hospital board in my last two years on it\, and Vice Chair of the Police Services Board in my last two years there. I was a Deputy Small Claims Court Judge of some 25 years and was a Dispute Resolution Officer in Family Court after retirement from my law practice. \nIn August 2005 after I closed my office my wife and I sailed our boat south to the Florida Keys on an eight month adventure. In 2007 we built our home on a 57 acre forested property on which we live. I belong to the Huronia Woodland Owners Association and am a past director of its Board. We are active and enjoy sailing our boat on Georgian Bay\, snow shoeing and cross country skiing on the property\, making new trails on it\,  gardening\, and I enjoy cutting firewood from deadfall. I also enjoy ice fishing. We are both bookworms and read extensively. We take pride in our daughters’\, grandson’s\, and son-in-law’s accomplishments. DESCRIPTION:Join the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society as we host a concert featuring works by Jewish composers impacted by the Holocaust.  These concerts are being arranged by Michelle Zapf-Belanger\, Section Violin\, Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. \nThere are 3 dates available to attend this concert 10\, 11\, & 12 May.  Make sure you buy tickets for the date that works for your schedule. \nThese concerts are being presented in support of the traveling exhibit  “And in 1948\, I came to Canada”: The Holocaust in Six Dates  on display at the Thunder Bay Museum from April 6th until July 24th\, 2022. \nFeaturing music composed or arranged by – \nErich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957)  \n\nString Quartet No. 2\, Op. 26 (1933)\nOf these musicians featured in this concert\, only Erich Korngold escaped the Nazi death camps. A prominent Austrian composer\, he won an Oscar for a film score in 1937\, and was asked to move temporarily to Los Angeles\, California to compose the score for the new Robin Hood movie starring Errol Flynn. The move saved his life. Only a month later\, the Nazis annexed Austria\, confiscating his home in Vienna.\n\nErwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) \n\nString Quartet No. 1 (1925)\nCzech composer Erwin Schulhoff was a protégé of Antonín Dvořák and Claude Debussy\, among others\, and was enjoying a skyrocketing composing career in the 1920s when his Jewish faith and progressive politics began to create obstacles for him. He was arrested and deported to Wülzburg prison camp near Weißenburg\, Bavaria \, where he died in 1942 from tuberculosis.\n\nAlma Rosé (1906-1944) / Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) \n\nIn mir klingt ein Lied (A song rings out within me)\nAlma Rosé\, an accomplished violinist and member of prominent musical Rosé family\, became the conductor of the Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz\, a group of the orchestral players in the women’s camp\, who were forced to perform weekly concerts for the SS. Here\, he teaches wildlife science and management\, and has undergraduate and graduate students engaged in projects related to habitat or behavioural study of ungulates\, leading to over 50 papers and book chapters on these topics. DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Bill Reist\, Friends of Grain Elevators\, Board of Directors \nThis webinar will be presented in person and virtually. \nCLICK HERE to watch the free webinar!\nJoin the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society and our partner the Friends of Grain Elevators as Bill Reist presents the fascinating construction of the twin Bawlf and Stewart grain elevators simultaneous construction in the summer of 1923. \nBill Reist is a retired Structural Engineer. He graduated from McMaster University in 1963 and came to Port Arthur to work for C. D. Howe Engineering in the fall of 1964. His experience with C. D. Howe included a great deal of design and construction work with grain elevators which were the core expertise of the company. \nHe was directly responsible for concept development\, detailed engineering design and construction of an inland terminal grain elevator in Indiana\, a waterfront terminal elevator in Windsor and many maintenance and remedial projects in Lakehead elevators. \nThe collateral expertise related to elevators includes marine structures to address shipping\, foundations of heavy industrial structures\, slipforming procedures unique to silo-shaped structures. He supervised the construction of a dock and breakwater in El Salvador which consisted of a series of slipformed concrete caissons and included ship handling features for berthing and mooring as well as providing protection for the port from strong ocean swells. \nThe C. D. Howe Company was sold on the 1990’s and Bill took his experience in construction to the mining field during the expansion of Lac des Iles mine in 2000.
