SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Finnish Canadian Historical Society commemorates 50 year anniversary
DESCRIPTION:The Thunder Bay Finnish Canadian Historical Society (TBFCHS) is pleased to announce the “From the Ashes of the Old: The History\, Loss\, and Memory of the Finnish Labour Temple” event\, taking place on Saturday April 27\, 2024 at the Thunder Bay Museum on 425 Donald Street East at 2 PM\, free and open to the public. This event will serve as the 50th anniversary commemoration of the TBFCHS\, a not-for-profit member-supported organization founded in 1974. \nThis milestone offers an opportunity for reflection on the Finnish Labour Temple\, an important cultural landmark tragically lost in a fire on December 22\, 2021. TBFCHS members Saku Pinta\, Jorma Halonen\, Kathy Toivonen\, and Sara Janes will deliver presentations on topics related to the history\, loss\, and memory of the Finnish Labour Temple. Also\, the materials recovered from the time capsule – buried in the cornerstone of the building for nearly 113 years – will be on public display for the first time. The event will be followed by the TBFCHS annual general meeting. \n“The Society has been a unique undertaking right from the start\,” observes TBFCHS President Saku Pinta. “Our founding members represented the local Finnish community in nearly all of its diversity\, no small task given the political and religious differences which have often proved divisive over the years.” Pinta notes that this “unity in diversity” in service of historical inquiry has been a source of strength and helps to explain the longevity of the TBFCHS. “As a member-supported organization\, we have served as the leading voice of Finnish Canadian history in the region for 50 years through the efforts of the community itself\, telling our own stories and preserving our own history.” \nSince 1974\, the TBFCHS has made multiple outstanding and pioneering contributions to the preservation and interpretation of the history of Finnish Canadians in northwestern Ontario. Beyond individual achievements\, this includes but is not limited to: \n– the publication of four books\, the most recent\, A Century of Sport in the Finnish Community of Thunder Bay (co-published with The Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame)\, won the Communication and Best in Show awards from the International Sports Heritage Association in 2014\n– numerous public presentations\, notably a series of historical panels that were on display in the Hoito Restaurant for many years\n– the compiling of an archive – housed in the Lakehead University Archives – of thousands of historical documents\, photographs\, and oral histories of various Finnish organizations\, individuals\, and activities in Thunder Bay and the surrounding region\n– organizing the “Increasing Access to Finnish Language Archives” project in 2018-2019\, with the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Documentary Heritage Communities Program\, which digitized and translated key historical documents from Finnish to the English-language for the first time\n– contributing to the recovery of the Finnish Labour Temple time capsule in April 2022\, thanks to the work of the late Marc Metsäranta.

SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum - Free Public Lecture - Shawn Patterson - Fur Trade Fort William: A Chronology Through Art\, 1805-1882
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the reconstruction of fur-trade-era Fort William\, please join Shawn Patterson from Fort William Historical Park for an intimate tour of forty-five works of art featuring the trading post throughout the 19th century.   \nShawn will share stories regarding each piece\, discussing how the works were discovered\, who the artists were\, why they visited the region when they did\, and how some of the pieces were used to inform the reconstruction of Fort William fifty years ago. \nThe works of eighteen artists will be featured\, including well-known watercolourist William Armstrong\, but most of the pieces were captured by lesser-known amateurs who sketched the Fort while passing through.  Of special note is Paul Kane’s masterpiece in oil: Chief at Fort William – Maydoc-game-kinungee\, the sketch for which was taken on the Kaministiquia River on September 19\, 1848. \nFollowing a one-hour A/V presentation\, the second-floor exhibition will be open for exploration for those who attend in-person\, and Shawn will be on-hand to answer questions and listen to your perspectives on the collection. \nShawn Patterson is the Collections Team Leader at Fort William Historical Park where he has been interpreting the Canadian fur trade since 1991.  While the living history exhibits contained within the fifty buildings on the Fort’s twenty-five-acre historic site are Shawn’s primary responsibility\, he also oversees the costuming department\, pursues historic research\, and trains program staff.  Interpretive mentoring is one of the favourite facets of his job\, so should you come to visit (and you should!) you’ll often find him performing many of his curatorial duties on the historic site\, in-costume\, and in-character. \n\nFree Museum Admission during the event\nRefreshments will be available\n\n

SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum - Bev Soloway - The Fur Trader's Table: A "Bill of Fare" from 18th Century Rupert's Land
DESCRIPTION:This will be an in-person event that is free to view.  The lecture will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in person and it will be recorded then posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date.   \nDescription: \n135 years before Fort William was built\, the Hudson’s Bay Company was sending fur traders to the meager posts dotting the Hudson and James Bays coastline. These men were predominantly from Scotland’s northern Orkney Islands. When the annual ship from Britain arrived in the north\, it brought imported food that was expected to last the year\, supplemented with local foodstuffs from around the posts. The Fur Traders’ Table takes a closer look at what imported and local foods were eaten\, as well as to what extent the men sustained old world foodways while experiencing new world resources.\n \nSpeaker Bio: \nBeverly Soloway\, from Lakehead University’s History Department\, has extensively investigated foodways during the HBC’s early years in the Sub-Arctic. Teaching Canadian history at Lakehead University\, her interests include exploring how Canadians live within their time and place\, including roles played by society\, gender\, and food.\n \n\nFree Museum Admission during the event\nRefreshments will be available\n\nThis lecture session is part of a the Society’s long tradition of holding free public lectures. Talks on a wide range of topics are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Thunder Bay Museum from September to April.   \n2023-2024 Thunder Bay Museum lecture series is sponsored by the Lakehead University Department of History.

SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum Free Public Lecture (In Person and Virtual): Dr. Peter Raffo - Naming the New City at the Lakehead
DESCRIPTION:This will be an in-person event that is free to view. The lecture will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in person and recorded and posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date. \nCLICK HERE TO VIEW THE WEBINAR \nHow did Thunder Bay get its name? Why were two almost identical names placed on the ballot when citizens were asked to make their choice from three options in the 1969 plebiscite? Was the result contrived by local and provincial politicians who wanted a clean break with the past? Or was it a genuine expression of the electors’ will? \nDr. Raffo seeks answers and discovers some interesting new evidence. \nSpeaker Bio: Since 1970\, Peter has maintained a continuing interest in the amalgamation of the Twin Cities. He has published several articles in Papers and Records on the history and consequences of this seminal event in the life of Thunder Bay. In 1995 he oversaw the creation of an Oral History of Amalgamation\, which included interviews with politicians\, city administrators and staff who had been involved in the process. \nFree Museum Admission during the event. SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum Free Public Lecture (In Person and Virtual): Nancy Angus - Places and Faces: The Stories behind the Stories of Place During a Pandemic and Today
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society for a lecture from Nancy Angus\, founder of Age BIG and co-coordinator of the Places and Faces project. This will be an in-person event that is free to view. The lecture will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in person and recorded and posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date. \nClick here to view the webinar \nDESCRIPTION: \nJoin Nancy Angus\, founder of Age BIG and co-coordinator of the PLACES & FACES project as we share its stories. Learn more about the concept of placemaking and hear how our storytellers\, all 65 years or better\, captured their stories digitally (in videos composed of photos and voice-overs)\, as audio recordings and as written accounts. \nPLACES & FACES asked storytellers to recognize a place or places that fostered a sense of connection and belonging to their community\, outside of their home. With senior centres and other facilities closed during the pandemic\, we heard many stories about how older adults engaged in placemaking to overcome barriers to social connection. This project demonstrated how resilient and creative people can be in making those connections. \nPlacemaking is often concerned with planning\, designing\, and managing public spaces in ways “that promote people’s health\, happiness\, and well-being.” Emerging research is now focusing on placemaking as a way that people “transform physical spaces into socially relevant and meaningful places.” PLACES & FACES has gathered some of the stories that highlight how older adults in Thunder Bay are actively creating and negotiating their sense of place as they age. \nJoin Nancy and our storytellers as we celebrate their stories and learn from their experiences. Through stories such as these\, we hope to inspire others\, young and old alike\, to find or create their own places. In doing so\, they can help others who are physically isolated or feeling lonely to find connections that matter as well. \nFree Museum Admission during the event. Refreshments will be available.

SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum Free Public Lecture (In Person and Virtual): Lakehead University Graduate Students - Christine Green and Haileigh Riddell
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society for a lecture from Lakehead University Graduate Students Christine Green and Haileigh Riddell. This will be a in-person event that is free to view. The lecture will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in-person and recorded and posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date. \nCLICK HERE TO VIEW THE WEBINAR\n  \nChristine Green\, Constructing a Collective Past: Locating Indigenous Histories in Local Narratives \nTruth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action #67 calls for the federal government to undertake a national review of museum policies and best practices to determine compliance with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and make recommendations. Of specific importance is UNDRIP Article 15.1\, outlining Indigenous peoples’ right to have their cultures\, traditions\, and histories appropriately represented in education and public information. \nOne of the main ways the public interacts with Canadian history is through museums and public history initiatives. So\, the question becomes what representations of Indigenous histories are being presented in museums? This presentation will examine exhibition and programming practices in museums located in Northwestern Ontario in order to analyze the collective imagining of community histories in relation to Indigenous peoples. By examining exhibits\, programming\,  and outreach materials at various museums across Northwestern Ontario a pattern of representation emerges where Indigenous histories are relegated to the fur trade era and earlier. This presentation will examine why this pattern exists\, what museums are doing to correct it\, and what museums need in order to support the major changes required. \nHaileigh Riddell\, Eugenics: A comparison of Ontario and Alberta while examining the connection to Northwestern Ontario \nHer presentation compares the Eugenics Society of Canada\, based in Ontario\, and the Alberta Eugenics Board\, while examining the connection to Northwestern Ontario. In comparing the two provincial eugenic organizations\, the talk explores the similarities and differences in key policies\, legislation\, and public sentiment\, while discussing the lasting impact of eugenic practices in Canada. \nFree Museum Admission during the event. \nSpeaker Bio: \nSince 1970\, Peter has maintained a continuing interest in the amalgamation of the Twin Cities. He has published several articles in Papers and Records on the history and consequences of this seminal event in the life of Thunder Bay.  In 1995 he oversaw the creation of an Oral History of Amalgamation\, which included interviews with politicians\, city administrators and staff who had been involved in the process.

SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum: PLACES & FACES: Gathering Older Adults’ Stories of Connecting\, Belonging\, Placemaking in Thunder Bay
DESCRIPTION:The Thunder Bay Museum and Age BIG invite you to be a volunteer storyteller in our legacy project “PLACES & FACES:  Gathering Older Adults’ Stories of Connecting\, Belonging\, Placemaking in Thunder Bay”. \nWhat is the Project? \nWe are seeking applications from 7 older adults who want to share a story about a favourite place you sought out during the pandemic or a meaningful place that you enjoy today. Each storyteller will produce a 2-4-minute multimedia video called a digital story. \nOur Age BIG team has spearheaded the GIANTs digital project story series. Thunder Bay older adults 58 to 98 created digital stories that have been seen in classrooms and at conferences around the world. To view the GIANTs stories go to http://www.storycentre.ca/giants-thunder-bay \nPLACES & FACES storytellers will meet other interesting people and make memories! Your video\, with your permission\, will be showcased by the Thunder Bay Museum to help others consider seeking out places that help them connect in their community. \nYou can also participate in this exciting project by submitting a poem\, short story (300 words or less) or recipe that speaks to a meaningful place in your life. \nWhat is the focus of PLACES & FACES? \nOur goal is for storytellers to focus on unconventional places that have helped you foster a sense of connection and belonging to your community. This project will compile stories that will inspire peers and educate younger people about how to connect focusing on place. With senior’s centers and other facilities closing during the pandemic\, we heard many stories about how older adults engaged in placemaking to overcome barriers to social connection\, so stories may include places like: \n–Online: people who have connected to new friends using technology; \n–Grocery store: the solo-living person who engages with shoppers/employees; \n–Portable chair: a person who sets up their chair in a park to chat to people; \n–Laundry room: the person who strikes up conversation with neighbours in the laundry room in their building; \n–Neighbourhood: the neighbour who opened her apartment door to play the piano for her neighbours to listen from their apartments\, or a walking route that you discovered in your area; \n–Historic places:  a building that a person worked in or lived in like the former Eaton’s store\, a municipal outdoor pool that you helped to build\, or a hospital where your children were born. \nWhat is Placemaking? \nPlacemaking is often concerned with planning\, designing\, and managing “public spaces in ways that promote people’s health\, happiness\, and well-being.”  Emerging research is now focusing on placemaking as ways that people “transform physical spaces into socially relevant and meaningful places.”  Through this storytelling project\, we hope to capture stories that highlight how older adults in Thunder Bay are actively creating and negotiating their sense of place as they age. \nWhat is the goal of PLACES & FACES? \nPLACES & FACES is to celebrate and learn from the storytellers by giving you a platform to share.  We’ll gather and share your stories to inspire others\, young and old alike\, to find or create places and connections that matter.  We’ll help you ever step of the way but the final story that you choose to share is your story. \nWhat do I do during the Digital Storytelling Workshop? \nYou’ll attend a 3-day in-person session from December 1 to 3rd at the Thunder Bay Museum\, 425 Donald Street East where you will participate in story circles and with the help of our facilitator and fabulous coaches\, you will make a personal 3-minute (300 word) video using photos\, a script (approximately 250-300 word script)\, and perhaps music and/or sounds. You do not need to have any computer experience to take part! Meals will be provided. There is no cost to participate. \nI’m Interested! Who do I Contact? \nDigital story tellers will be chosen from a pool of interested candidates. We will select 7 digital storytellers to participate in the December 1\, 2\, and 3 creation workshop and at least 10 written stories (300 words or less) and/or poems and or/recipes. \nIf you have a story to tell\, and want to discuss the project\, please contact: \nNancy Angus\, nancy@agebig.com or 807-627-3564 or Dannielle Pesheau at education@thunderbaymuseum.ca. \nTo apply\, please register at https://thunderbaymuseum1.wildapricot.org/event-5021593.

SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum Free Public Lecture (In Person and Virtual): Oula Seitsonen - Finnish-Canadian Homestead Research
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society for a lecture from Oula Seitsonen\, chair in Finnish Studies at Lakehead University\, 2022‑2023. This will be a in-person event that is free to view. The lecture will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in-person and recorded and posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date.   \nCLICK HERE TO VIEW THE WEBINAR\nFinnish-Canadian homestead research in the footsteps of archaeologist Sakari Pälsi \nThis lecture describes ongoing contemporary archaeological research on the material heritage of Finnish-Canadian immigrants and on retracing the footsteps of Finnish archaeological pioneer Sakari Pälsi who traveled across Canada in 1927. In October 2022\, my Canadian colleagues and I carried out archaeological\, ethnographic\, and anthropological work at a Finnish homestead in Tarmola\, Gorham Township\, where the great-grandparents of my colleague Meaghan Peuramäki-Brown lived since 1924. This work will be the Canadian part of our cross-Atlantic co-operation: in tandem with the fieldwork at the Kainulainen homestead in Tarmola\, we will study their ancestral farm in eastern Finland. Material culture approach to recent past historical events can reveal new and unexpected perceptions of seemingly familiar subjects\, like everyday lives and foodways\, and even such unanticipated issues as folk magic and beliefs\, as suggested already by our preliminary work. Besides the archaeological work in Tarmola\, I have retraced the travels of famous Finnish archaeologist Sakari Pälsi and his wife across Canada 95 years ago; I have earlier followed Pälsi’s wide-ranging travels in Finland\, Russia\, and Mongolia. On the trip from Quebec to Vancouver Island and back Pälsi visited Finnish communities and homesteads\, logging sites\, bush camps\, and mines\, and documented the lifeways of immigrants and the landscapes that they lived in. Port Arthur\, the “great city of Finns”\, was one of Pälsi’s main destinations on his journey. I have revisited and re-documented most of the locations along Pälsi’s trail\, and also returned his photographs to the local museums along the way. Sakari Pälsi’s insightful ethnographic notes and photographs provide also relevant background material for our multidisciplinary work at the Kainulainen homestead in Tarmola. \nSpeaker Bio \nOula Seitsonen (Sakarin-Pentin Ilarin Oula) is a chair in Finnish Studies at Lakehead University\, 2022‑2023. He is an archaeologist and geographer at the University of Oulu\, Finland\, and his research interests cover a wide range of themes\, both temporally and geographically\, from the archaeology of early pastoralism in Fennoscandia (Sápmi)\, Mongolia\, and East Africa\, to traces of the 21st-century refugee crises. At Lakehead\, he is pursuing a project on the material heritage of Finnish immigrants. Focusing on the 1927 cross-Canada trip of Finnish archaeological pioneer Sakari Pälsi. \nFree Museum Admission during the event. Refreshments will be available.

SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum: Reel Memories of the Lakehead: News from the Giant
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Thunder Bay Museum on Tuesday\, Nov. 15\, 2022 at 7:30 PM to watch some exciting recently digitized historical newsreel film with us. \nThe Thunder Bay Museum\, Friends of the Finnish Labour Temple\, and ShebaFilms presents: \nReel Memories of the Lakehead: News from the Giant \nThe Reel Memories of the Lakehead project was a partnership between the Thunder Bay Museum\, Friends of the Finnish Labour Temple\, and ShebaFilms. News from the Giant is a series of 8 short vignettes from the Thunder Bay (formerly Port Arthur and Fort William) and Northwestern Ontario region. These vignettes replicate the year-end highlight reels\, that news stations and movie theaters of the day used to show\, reviewing major events of the year. The newsreel film was originally donated to the Thunder Bay Museum by Fraser Dougall and spans from approximately 1958-1978. These vignettes represent a small portion of a very large collection of 16mm film that has been cleaned\, spliced\, and digitized for academic and public use. \nFree Museum Admission during the event.
