These men felled gigantic white pines. In spring\, the squared timber was assembled into rafts to form 500-metre-long logs. The Raftsmen sailed in these wooden cages from the Ottawa River to the St. Lawrence River. DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Michel Prévost\, renowned regional historian\, heritage advocate\, Outaouais Historical Society President\, and recipient of several scholarships \nThe Ottawa Valley has the privilege of being associated with a legendary figure whose fame goes far beyond the region’s borders. This folklore giant spent half his life here\, attracted by the forestry industry. He became a lumberjack\, log driver\, site foreman\, and master raftsman. This presentation will demystify him by exploring the different facets of this larger-than-life character. Come discover his exploits\, including the famous battle on the Union (Chaudières) Bridge where he alone beat more than 150 Shiners\, strong-arm Irishmen. Finally\, we will demonstrate that there are still many traces of him in our folklore\, toponymy\, and monuments. \nAdmission is free.
