SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society 2021 AGM and Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre Centre Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 28th for our annual AGM\, from our virtual location at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theaters! \nAbout this event\nThe Town of York Historical Society will hold its Annual General Meeting on Thursday\, September 28th online via Zoom. Following the business meeting\, there will be a special talk by Ellen Flowers\, Manager of Marketing and Communications at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theater Centre\, who will give us a peek behind the curtain and speak about the theater centre and its history. \nFREE for TYHS members\, $10 for non-members. Memberships and membership renewals are available HERE. \nThe past\, the present and persistence: The story of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre \nThe Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres have had a long and storied history. From their glory days as a Vaudeville roadhouse to an MGM movie palace to their near demise and multi-million-dollar rebirth. Persistence is what has kept this “double-decker” theatre going since 1913. \nOwned and operated by the Ontario Heritage Trust\, we’ll further investigate into the Elgin and Winter Garden story and recount many interesting facts. For instance\, how many times has the Elgin changed its name and what precious artifact was lost in the theatre’s fire. We’ll also share secrets of The Winter Garden\, like why was bread dough so important to the restoration project and what was found backstage undisturbed for over 60 years. \nKnown for her comprehensive “walk-thru” theatre tours\, Ellen Flowers\, Marketing & Communications Manager will switch it up and present a “talk-thru” slide show. Join us as we travel through the years of this celebrated building. \nHow to attend:\nThis is a virtual event that will take place via Zoom. Details on how to join are included in the confirmation email. Participants can attend via computer\, tablet\, smartphone or dial-in via phone. \nAll are welcome but space is limited. Please RSVP!

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society Fall Author Series: Mark Bourrie ("Bush Runner: The Adventures of Pierre-Esprit Radisson")
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 23rd for the first evening in our author’s series! \nMark Bourrie will speak about the research process for his book Bush Runner: The Adventures of Pierre-Esprit Radisson\, which tells the extraordinary true story of the 17th-century figure\, a man more trading partner than colonizer\, a peddler of goods and not worldview—and with it offers a fresh perspective on the world in which he lived. Using Radisson’s journals\, which are the best first-hand accounts of 17th century Canada\, Bourrie will provide insight into the sources used to bring Radisson’s story to life. \nKnown to some as the first European to explore the upper Mississippi\, and widely as the namesake of ships and hotel chains\, Pierre-Esprit Radisson is perhaps best described\, writes Mark Bourrie\, as “an eager hustler with no known scruples.” Kidnapped by Mohawk warriors at the age of fifteen\, Radisson assimilated and was adopted by a powerful family\, only to escape to New York City after less than a year. After being recaptured\, he defected from a raiding party to the Dutch and crossed the Atlantic to Holland—thus beginning a lifetime of seized opportunities and frustrated ambitions.

SUMMARY:2021 Emancipation Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Emancipation Day is now formally recognized across Canada. Join the OBHS as we celebrate with our annual event on August 1st\, at 6pm EST. \nAbout this event\nOn August 1st\, the OBHS hosts virtually the annual Emancipation Day celebration to commemorate the anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act. \nAugust 1\, 1834\, marks the day in which the practice of the enslavement of African peoples in all British colonies came to an end. Through the tireless efforts of both the enslaved and free status Africans\, as well as Black and white abolitionists\, emancipation finally became a reality. \nThis event features speakers\, performers\, the history of Toronto Carnival\, a cooking demonstration and much more. Join us and share this free event with your family and network! \nOn March 24th\, 2021\, by unanimous consent\, the House of Commons has adopted the M-36 bill. \nCanada has now recognized August 1st as Emancipation Day nationwide – But the recognition\, the education\, the fight for justice has just begun. \nThe Motion M-36 under PMB in the name of MP Majid Jowhari\, demonstrates that the House recognize that: \n(a) the British Parliament abolished slavery in the British Empire as of August 1\, 1834; \n(b) slavery existed in British North America prior to its abolition in 1834; \n(c) abolitionists and others who struggled against slavery\, including those who arrived in Upper and Lower Canada by the Underground Railroad\, have historically celebrated August 1 as Emancipation Day; \n(d) the Government of Canada announced on January 30\, 2018\, that it would officially recognize the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent to highlight the important contributions that people of African descent have made to Canadian society\, and to provide a platform for confronting anti-Black racism; \n(e) the heritage of Canada’s people of African descent and the contributions they have made and continue to make to Canada; and that\, in the opinion of the House\, the government should designate August 1 of every year as “Emancipation Day” in Canada. \nHouse of Commons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0_JC9TwAtM \nThe OBHS invites you to become a member and welcomes donations.

SUMMARY:Mrs. Dalgairns's 1830 Kitchen – Mary F. Williamson with Elizabeth Baird
DESCRIPTION:Mary Williamson talks about the extraordinary mix of cuisine and culture in an 1830 cookbook\, with updated recipes demo’d by Elizabeth Baird \nIn her new book\, Mrs. Dalgairns’s Kitchen\, Mary Williamson examines an unusual 19th century cookbook\, The Practice of Cookery. The book was unique not only in being wholly original\, but for its broad culinary influences\, incorporating recipes from British North America\, the United States\, England\, Scotland\, France and India. \nMrs. Dalgairn was thought by her contemporaries to be Scottish\, but she had lived for over 20 years on Prince Edward Island in Canada. In Mrs Dalgairns’s Kitchen\, Mary Williamson reclaims Dalgairns and her book’s Canadian roots. In addition to the author’s experience of Acadian and Mi’kmaq foodways\, Mrs. Dalgairns lived in Scotland for a number of years and added recipes there to her repertoire. Her mother had come from Boston\, inspiring the cookbook’s several American recipes; Dalgairns’s brothers-in-law lived in India\, reflected in the chapter devoted to curry recipes. \nWhen The Practice of Cookery first appeared in 1829\, reviewers went into ecstasies and it was a top seller for nearly 30 years\, until it was finally eclipsed by Mrs. Beeton’s famous cookbook. \nMary Williamson will be joined by Elizabeth Baird\, who adapted some of the recipes in the book for modern kitchens. Baird—who found Dalgairns’s recipes extremely practical—will demonstrate two of the updated recipes from the book. A Question & Answer with both women will follow.
