SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society: Tales of Christmas Past
DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 8th for a festive evening as we learn about the Christmas traditions of days gone by! \nMany of us who celebrate Christmas have traditions that we feel are steeped and time honoured. But most of them aren’t as old as we might think. Hardly any of the Christmas traditions that we know today were widely celebrated when the Town of York was founded back in 1793\, and can instead be dated to the Victorian era. But we’ll also look back at a time\, before the Town of York even started\, that Christmas was outlawed and celebrating it was illegal. Whether you’re passionate about putting up the Christmas decorations\, or like to channel your inner Scrooge\, you’ll be sure to find something of interest in this presentation! \nAbout the Speaker: \nRichard Fiennes-Clinton has been involved in the local Toronto historical community for over 30 years. He gives walking tours all across Toronto\, but has also organized a lot of archival material\, which he uses to give illustrated talks on more than 200 years of Toronto history. He is also the author of a book called “Muddy York – A History of Toronto Until 1834”\, copies of which are available for purchase at Toronto’s First Post Office.

SUMMARY:Riverdale Historical Society (Virtual): Modest Hopes: Homes and Stories of Toronto's Workers by Leslie Valpy
DESCRIPTION:RHS welcomes Leslie Valpy\, a heritage conservationist practitioner and Don Loucks\, a Heritage Architect\, to speak about their recent book\, “Modest Hopes\, Homes and Stories of Toronto’s workers from the 1820s to the 1920s”\, which celebrates Toronto’s built heritage of row houses\, semis\, and cottages and the people who lived in them. \nToronto’s workers’ cottages are often characterized as being small\, cramped\, poorly built\, and in need of modernization or even demolition. But for the workers and their families who originally lived in them from the 1820s to the 1920s\, these houses were far from modest. Many had been driven off their ancestral farms or had left the crowded conditions of tenements in their home cities abroad. Once in Toronto\, many lived in unsanitary conditions in makeshift shanty-towns or cramped shared houses in downtown neighbourhoods such as The Ward. To then move to a self-contained cottage or rowhouse was the result of an unimaginably strong hope for the future and a commitment to family life. \nNote: this is a Zoom presentation. If you are not on our mail list\, send us your request via the “Contact RHS” page.

SUMMARY:Heritage Ottawa (Virtual): Welcome to the Tunnel. Now: How'd we Get In\, and How do we Get Out?
DESCRIPTION:The mushrooming fix-up business is the largest component of Canada’s largest industry\, construction. In Ontario\, it pumps tens of billions of dollars annually into our GDP. And one in every eight Ontario buildings was constructed before World War II. \nBut if it is so economically vital\, Marc Denhez asks\, why is it still so hard to target even the best-of-the-best for reuse\, instead of a trip to the dump? How did we get into this tunnel? \nJoin Marc Denhez\, lawyer and adjudicator with over 30 years’ experience in the law of built\, natural and intangible heritage\, who breaks the problem down into three clear headwinds: \n– A biased tax structure (including incentives for demolition and disincentives for repair);\n– Misleading branding of the fix-up / reuse option; and\n– Shortages of funded training for doing good fix-up on a budget. \nMarc also sets out a path that could lead us out of the tunnel. Find out how a level playing field could be restored to the industry in order to not only sustain our building assets\, but capitalize on them.

SUMMARY:Friends of the South Grey Museum Speaker Series 2022: Barbara Dickson\, "Bomb Girls: Trading Aprons for Ammo"
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the South Grey Museum invite you to the Speakers Series 2022\, developed and hosted by Barry Penhale. As someone with an interest in the Museum and its programs\, you know how much we have all missed many activities during the COVID-19 pandemic\, including our series of talks. We decided to welcome our supporters back to a virtual series for 2022\, offered as webinars via Zoom with another eight programs\, occurring as usual on the third Wednesday of each month\, April to November\, at 7:00 pm. \nThe Museum being no longer available as a host site\, and with the continuing threat of COVID\, going virtual was the obvious solution. Moving to a virtual delivery brings with it some additional costs\, so we have made this a subscription series\, but we’ve kept the usual at-the-door cost as a household fee of $10 per session. We are grateful to the Municipality of Grey Highlands for continuing their support for the presenters. \n\nBarbara Dickson is a professionally-trained public speaker\, local historian\, and award-winning author in both fiction and non-fiction. During the Second World War\, over 21\,000 patriotic citizens\, predominately women\, courageously worked with high explosives. Barbara provides an account of women working in high-security\, dangerous conditions making bombs in Toronto during the Second World War. For over a four-year period they filled munitions for the Allied Forces at a top-secret facility located in Scarborough\, Ontario. \nSome 170 buildings comprised the site along with over four kilometres of secretive tunnels\, which remain as mysterious today as they did years ago. What was it like to work in a munitions factory during the Second World War? Barbara’s comprehensive presentation focuses not only on the breadth of the war-time endeavour but also on the amazing women who worked there. This little-known military story about Canada’s bomb girls—the girls behind the guns—will appeal to every Canadian who honours those who fought for their freedom both overseas and here at home. \n\nMany Sessions\, Your Choice \nHoping you will join us for another exciting series\, this time from the comfort of your home\, no uncomfortable folding chairs\, and no expenditure on gasoline! \nChoose which parts of the series you prefer. Visit our web site for in-depth descriptions of The Sessions. \nFull Series of all eight sessions monthly April to November\nwith one free session discount\nfor $70\nOR\nHalf Series of four sessions monthly April to July\nfor $40\nOR\nHalf Series of four sessions monthly August to November\nfor $40 \n \nBuy $70 Full Series (8 sessions) April to November \nBuy $40 Half Series (4 sessions) April to July \nBuy $40 Half Series (4 sessions) August to November

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society Presents "Sir Frederick Banting: The Man You Thought You Knew"
DESCRIPTION:Grant Maltman\, the Curator of the Banting House National Historic Site of Canada in London\, Ontario\, will be speaking on the subject of Sir Frederick Banting: The Man You Thought You Knew. \nMost of us know of Sir Frederick Banting (1895-1941) as the co-discoverer of insulin\, but there is much more to his story! Frederick Banting once wrote\, “Insulin was but a means to an end”. After receiving Canada’s first Nobel Prize\, insulin did indeed become a means to an end for him. Unfortunately for Banting\, that end was a legacy from which he often desperately attempted to distance himself. \nThe story of Frederick Banting is well known but not necessarily known well. While his name has become synonymous with the discovery of insulin\, there was far more to this distinguished Canadian’s career than the often-simplified events of the insulin period. Grant Maltman will highlight the centenary of insulin and introduce other aspects of Banting’s life and career\, including his service in both World Wars\, his use of art as an escape\, and his role as a catalyst for Canada’s military and medical research programmes. \nWe suggest that you tune in to the meeting shortly before 8 pm on November 2\, so that we can get started on time. \nZoom info: \nTime: Nov 2\, 2022 08:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nTo join the Zoom Meeting\, go to:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/86074430910?pwd=S2xDTVVQc0NoaEl3MmZYSU9rdnJqQT09 \nMeeting ID: 860 7443 0910\nPasscode: 172555 \nTo join by telephone\, find your local number at: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kcohQYhyAK

SUMMARY:Riverdale Historical Society (Virtual): The 1852 Agricultural Exhibition and the Agricultural Association of Upper Canada with Ross Fair
DESCRIPTION:“Toronto was all bustle and excitement”: The 1852 Agricultural Exhibition and the Agricultural Association of Upper Canada\nAnother year’s Canadian National Exhibition has come and gone. But when did exhibitions become an annual tradition and who first organized them? To answer these questions\, the talk will centre on the Agricultural Association of Upper Canada (founded 1846) and its 1852 Provincial Agricultural Exhibition\, hosted in Toronto. Susanna Moodie was so impressed by the show that she wrote a chapter about it. But a successful exhibition was just one of the association’s ambitions that year and\, at the event\, the provincial government made a major announcement that has shaped government support of agriculture in Ontario ever since. \nDr. Ross Fair teaches in the Department of History at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). His study of agricultural societies\, Improving Upper Canada: Agricultural Leadership and State Formation\, 1791-1853\, will be published soon. He is currently writing a book on the failed attempts to encourage hemp cultivation in Upper and Lower Canada. \nTuesday\, October 25\, 2022\nAt 6:30 p.m. \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/83409291542\nMeeting ID: 834 0929 1542 \nOne tap mobile\n+1 647 558 0588 Canada\n+1 647 374 4685 Canada

SUMMARY:Ontario Women’s History Network Annual Conference and AGM
DESCRIPTION:Ontario Women’s History Network Annual Conference and AGM\nOctober 21-22\, 2022\nHybrid conference: Online and in Ottawa\nHistorically\, war has been a profoundly gendered experience\, as traditional dichotomies put women securely on the “Homefront\,” as supporters\, caregivers and afterward\, as mourners of the dead. Much scholarship has reflected on the historical experiences both on the battlefield and the “Homefront\,” and we now know that these two cannot be neatly separated. Early historiography focused on the contention that war broke down gender norms\, even was liberating for women. While we are interested in continuing such discussions\, we are also hopeful of expanding and diversifying them by hearing about gendered experiences of war-related activities in Ontario. How did women manage new familial tensions\, take on new types of work\, remember those who were lost? In particular\, we seek to explore how war is now taught in schools\, how war is remembered and preserved through public history institutions and through commemoration\, and new insights\nfrom current academic research on these subjects. \nPossible topics include\, but are not limited to: \nTeaching War and Gender:\nExploring wartime roles and resistance\nMoving beyond traditional narratives of war \nPublic history and the presentation/preservation of wartime:\nPresenting and preserving war and gender at museums\nWomen’s role in commemorating the war\nThe role of archives in the documentation of war \nOriginal research on war-related activities:\nThe “Homefront”\nVolunteerism and the wars\nWartime and women's rights\nCollateral damage of war\nPost-war and demobilization\nAnti-war movements\nGendering patriotism\, nationalism\, and war narratives\nWar in popular culture \nWe are accepting proposals for individual papers\, panels\, and plenary sessions. SUMMARY:Friends of the South Grey Museum Speaker Series 2022: Barbara Rusch\, "Two Queens\, Two Reigns: A Singular Purpose"
\n\nFittingly\, in the year of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee\, the renowned collector of Victoriana\, Barbara Rusch\, will join us in a tribute to two record-setting monarchs. Over a span of some 40 years she has become widely-known for her dedication to the preservation of historically important objects. Today\, Barbara is a recognized Sherlock Holmes and Houdini expert\, as well as having assembled the largest collection of Queen Victoria artifacts in Canada. A recent Toronto Star feature article quoted her as saying: “That’s what I consider my mission in life: to resurrect those voices\, to tell their stories.” In some ways\, the reigns of Queen Elizabeth II\, now in its 70th record-setting year\, and that of her great-great-grandmother\, Queen Victoria have run along parallel lines. Both ascended to the throne at a tender age and lived to celebrate significant milestones\, enjoying happy marriages to their cousins. What few know is that both survived assassination attempts and home invasions within the palace walls. Barbara will reveal these and other little-known facts about these popular and long-lived royal women. Don’t miss this master storyteller whose reputation as a lively enthusiastic presenter has few equals.

SUMMARY:UEL Association of Canada - Governor Simcoe Branch (Virtual): October 2022 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:“The Price Of Loyalty” — Presentation by Gail Copeland \nI am pleased to be able to share my writing journey with you. My fourth great-grandfather was a United Empire Loyalist who left New Jersey at the age of fifteen\, along with his older brother\, to find land in what is now Thorold\, Ontario. I’d like to tell you about the real-life people whose story inspired me to delve deeper. I am an avid genealogist and when I couldn’t find enough facts about what happened to these two boys\, I set out to write about what might have been. I spent a couple of years researching and when I could finally visualize everything in my mind\, I was ready. Please join me in learning about how it started\, who my characters are in real life\, why they had to leave the only home they’d ever known\, the hardships many of our ancestors would have endured just getting to the British Colonies and the difficulties they found once they arrived. I’ll also talk about my self-publishing journey and how it ultimately got me to this point. Finally\, I’ll let you know about the sequel I’m working on which continues during the War of 1812. I’d highly recommend reading the Price of Loyalty before the presentation so I won’t be giving anything away should you decide to read it later! The eBook and soft cover books are available through Amazon.ca. \nGail Copeland was born and raised in Ontario. She graduated from Ryerson University with an English Major. While not a huge fan of history in school. As an adult she found a passion for uncovering her family roots. Her 4th great-grandfather was a United Empire Loyalist. He left New Jersey\, at the age of fifteen\, to tramp through the wilderness in search of A new home is what is n ow known as Thorold\, Ontario. This could be his story and will appeal to anyone wanting to know more about life in the late 1700’s. Having two sons of her own\, Gail found it hard to imagine any mother being forced to send her teenaged boys into the forest alone and not see them for two years.
