SUMMARY:Heritage York Annual Howland Lecture: Tim Morawetz
DESCRIPTION:Heritage York invites all to the annual Howland Lecture at the Lambton House\, held in memory of our neighbourhood’s own Father of Confederation Sir William Pearce Howland\, onetime proprietor of the Lambton House. This year\, it will take place on Sunday\, January 25th at 2 pm. \nAuthor Tim Morawetz will present on Art Deco Architecture\, focusing on Ontario. The author of “Art Deco Architecture Across Canada\,” Morawetz has presented widely around the province to architects and general audiences to wide acclaim. \nWe recommend taking the TTC 55 bus from Jane Station which stops right in front of the Lambton House.

SUMMARY:La Société d'histoire de Toronto HISTORITOUR - Balade le long de la Humber
DESCRIPTION:Attention : Cette visite n’est pas une boucle. Elle fait environ 3\,5 km en terrain plat. \nDépart : Parc King’s Mill\, devant les piliers du pont de métro Old Mill (murales autochtones) \nArrivée : Lambton House\, 4066 Old Dundas \nComment venir : la meilleure façon est de prendre la TTC et de marcher 10 minutes : en sortant de la station de métro Old Mill\, aller jusqu’à Bloor\, passer devant un condo et prendre l’escalier qui descend dans la vallée. Ceci est le chemin le plus rapide mais il y a un escalier assez long! \nOU : tourner à droite en sortant du métro\, suivre Old Mill trail\, tourner à droite sur Old Mill road\, passer devant le restaurant et prendre la première rue avant le vieux pont en pierre. Continuer jusqu’aux piliers du pont du métro. \nSi vous venez en auto\, il y a quelques places de stationnement dans le parc King’s Mill. \nComment repartir : Autobus 55 pour aller à la station de métro Jane. Ou belle marche de 45 minutes sur la rive ouest de la Humber pour retourner au point de départ… \nGuides : Isabelle Montagnier et Johanne Roberge \nLe patrimoine de la rivière Humber est l’un des plus riches au Canada. Le site fut autrefois occupé par un village des Premières Nations\, Teiaigon. Au cours des siècles\, les Premières Nations comme les Européens ont profité du sol fertile de la région et de sa rivière poissonneuse. Cette région a été tour à tour un lieu de passage et de commerce\, de cueillette\, de chasse\, de pêche et de peuplement. \nLors de cette visite\, vous découvrirez les personnages qui ont fréquenté ces lieux au fil des siècles et les événements qui ont marqué son histoire\, comme l’ouragan Hazel en 1954.\nNous suivrons une partie du tracé du Sentier partagé inauguré en 2011 par la Société d’histoire de Toronto grâce à diverses subventions et au travail acharné de bénévoles. \nPas besoin de s’inscrire. SUMMARY:Heritage York Heritage Talks: Misadventure on the Humber
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, August 7\, 1968\, an event occurred on the Humber River that resonates in the Warren Park community to this day\, 52 years later! That event made the front page of the citywide newspapers. The Globe and Mail trumpeted the headline ‘Four girls\, dog\, wade into deep troubles’ – the front page of the Toronto Daily Star carried a picture of a terrified girl with the by line ‘3 Hours Of Terror On The Humber’ with an accompanying dedicated page of pictures and captions with the headline ‘Raging Humber maroons 4 terror-stricken girls.’ Not to be out done\, The Telegram quoted one of the girls ‘I Can’t Do It\, I’m Afraid.’ \nWhat was the dire event that captured the headlines that fateful day in August on the Humber River? In this short documentary\, we will explore the events of that day as seen through the eyes of surviving participants. Through interviews\, photographs and other media\, including a previously unseen short 8MM film of that day\, one will understand how a simple misadventure became a seminal moment for everyone involved.
