DESCRIPTION:Grey Roots Museum and Archives presents a unique concert series featuring a variety of talented\, creative artists from the local area. Familiar\, long-standing performers mixed with exciting up-and-comers share their original takes on life in Grey-Bruce and the world beyond. All in the beautiful acoustic space of the intimate Grey Roots Theatre.  \nOur Roots Are Showing\, Grey Roots’ first-ever spring concert series\, features one performance a month on a Thursday evening from March to June 2023. Start time for all performances is 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. \nJosh Ritchie is a born performer. Ever since he could stand\, he’s had a guitar in his hands and songs in his bones. As a performer\, he’s eclectic\, charming\, and captivating. As a songwriter\, he’s poignant and elegant\, showing a wisdom beyond his years. Ritchie admires music with purpose\, and\, as a young\, ambitious person of colour\, he takes pride in weaving social issues into his work. This\, combined with Ritchie’s infectious charisma and significant musical chops\, makes him a complex artist that will leave you wanting more. His unique brand of story-driven art-rock will move you\, inspire you and\, most importantly\, have you dancing and singing along. \nIn Ritchie’s young career he’s enjoyed significant achievements on and off stage. He has released two successful independent albums\, the first being featured in the CBC Searchlight Top 100 list; the second going on to get features on “CBC Ontario Morning” and the “Key of C\,” as well as being streamed thousands of times internationally. DESCRIPTION:Join the Direct Descendants and Community Friends of Negro Creek in the Grey Roots Theatre\, as they present The Early Black Settlers of Negro Creek. \nGenealogist researcher Nancy Lee will share her research on some of the first families who came to the area\, author Gael Jackson will read from her recently released book on Father Thomas Miller\, artist Tony Miller will discuss the paintings he has created about his Negro Creek ancestors\, and singer-songwriter Rob Green along with museum curators\, Carolynn and Sylvia Wilson\, will speak about the advocacy activities of the group. \nThrough words\, images and song\, this event celebrates the Negro Creek settlement and the work of descendants to commemorate this important history in Grey County. \nThe event runs Saturday May 13\, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. \nAdmission is free.

SUMMARY:Grey County Black Heritage Society Special Memorial Event: Lest We Forget: A Tribute to the No. 2 Construction Battalion
DESCRIPTION:GREY COUNTY BLACK HERITAGE SOCIETY TO HOST SPECIAL MEMORIAL EVENT SUNDAY\, JUNE 26\, 2022 \nThe Grey County Black Heritage Society would like to invite you and members of your family to attend an event which will be part of a series designed to recognize and honour those brave individuals who volunteered to fight on behalf of Canada in the First World War. There will be similar events held in several cities and towns across Canada. On June 26th we will pay tribute to those who hailed from Grey County and the surrounding areas. The Government of Canada will be presenting a National Apology in Truro\, N.S. on July 9th \, 2022\, to the No. 2 Construction Battalion. \nThe No. 2 Construction Battalion was made up of Black volunteers from across Canada\, the USA and some Caribbean Islands. It became a segregated unit which was officially launched in 1916 and set sail from Halifax\, N.S. in March 2017. Their primary function was to build roads\, railways\, and other buildings as was required to support the war effort in Europe. The battalion was disbanded on 20 September 1920. \nNo. 2 Construction Battalion | The Canadian Encyclopedia \nLocal Owen Sound resident Blaine Courtney will MC the event which will include Bruce Kruger – Town Crier of the Emancipation; Anthony Sherwood – Honour Before Glory documentary; Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine – Keynote speaker\, plus much more. \nAll families whose members served in the World Wars\, Korea\, or any other active duty on behalf of the Government of Canada\, are invited to join in this celebration. Please send in your RSVP to: hello@greycountyblackheritagesociety.org by June 18th and be sure to include the name of the individual being recognized along with your name and the number of people in this group for seating purposes. The program will commence promptly at 2:00 pm; please time your arrival for approximately 1:30 to allow time to be registered and seated.
