SUMMARY:Culinary Historians of Canada - Explore menus with Nathalie Cooke
DESCRIPTION:What’s on the Menu?\nTastes\, Traditions and Tantalizing Questions\nExplore Menus with Nathalie Cooke \nJoin us for an appetizing exploration of why menus matter and the stories they tell us today. We will come to menus belatedly\, after the dishes have been washed up\, so to speak. So in her exploration of ways that menus matter\, in this talk and in her book Tastes and Traditions (2025)\, Nathalie keeps at least two audiences in mind: diners of the menus’ moment and we who look at menus from distances spanning years\, even continents and linguistic divides. In this discussion for the Culinary Historians of Canada\, Nathalie will offer some menus that befuddle and delight\, and also ask us to scrutinize the menu from The Canadian Pavilion at Expo ’67\, challenging us to consider what it told diners in 1967 about Canadian cuisine. \nSaturday\, April 25\, 2026\nCampbell House Museum\nToronto\, ON\n2:00-4:00 pm\n(in-person event only) \nTickets available through Eventbrite\n$17.55 – $25.00 plus service fee \nAbout Nathalie Cooke \nNathalie Cooke is an English professor at McGill University\, a specialist in Canadian literature\, literary food studies and material culture. She is member of the Royal Society of Canada and an honorary lifetime member of the Culinary Historians of Canada. Nathalie is editor of What’s to Eat? Entrées into Canadian Food History (MQUP)\, founding editor of CuiZine: The Journal of Canadian Food Cultures (Érudit)\, co-editor with Fiona Lucas of Catharine Parr Traill’s The Female Emigrant’s Guide\, Cooking with a Canadian Classic (Carleton Library Series)\, and author of Tastes and Traditions: A Journey Through Menu History (Reaktion\, 2025). Her recent research uncovers hidden stories told by menus\, textiles\, and other everyday artefacts\, revealing how their forms\, codes\, and designs shape what we remember\, and how we read.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society Annual Fundraiser: Banned & Brewed
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the Town of York Historical Society’s Annual Fundraiser will take place on a new date\, May 1\, 2025\, to celebrate the City of Toronto’s 191st Birthday\, ahead of Museum month. After its colonial establishment in 1793\, the Town of York was incorporated on March 6\, 1834 as the City of Toronto marking its beginnings as a booming metropolis. The date isn’t the only thing changing this year. Traditionally\, our fundraiser has taken place at St. Lawrence Hall but due to construction setbacks\, our event will now be hosted at Campbell House Museum. Due to the smaller venue capacity\, we will be offering two different ticket types\, an in-person and virtual option\, to allow for all guests to participate. Virtual guests will have access to the keynote speaker’s presentation and the silent auction. \nThe Society will mark this anniversary by diving into the captivating history of beer and the temperance movement in the Town of York and the City of Toronto\, emphasizing the changes that both sides brought to the City. The Town of York Historical Society is happy to announce our special guest and keynote speaker\, beer expert and author\, Jordan St. John\, who will provide an insightful presentation on this relevant theme.  Following the success of our 2024 fundraiser\, the Society is excited to welcome our members and guests to Campbell House Museum to celebrate this intriguing topic. We also welcome the return of the Old Town Silent Auction\, featuring donated items and experiences from neighbourhood businesses\, which will take place virtually this year\, and local craft brewers who will be on-site for the event. \nMore information on registration and ticket sales regarding Toronto’s 191st Birthday is available at AnnualFundraiserBannedandBrewed.eventbrite.ca or email info@tos1stpo.com for assistance. If you wish to join in person please do not delay as these tickets will be strictly limited and are first come first serve. We can’t wait to have you join us for this special celebration!

SUMMARY:Campbell House Museum: Tales of the Grotesque
DESCRIPTION:Once upon a midnight dreary\, while I pondered\, weak and weary\, over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—while I nodded\, nearly napping\, suddenly there came a tapping\, as of some one gently rapping\, rapping at my chamber door. “’Tis some visitor\,” I muttered\, “tapping at my chamber door—only this and nothing more …” \nAn immersive horror opera\, Tales of the Grotesque invites visitors to explore Victorian Toronto through the eyes of literature’s most twisted author\, Edgar Allan Poe\, and come tapping at the door to the unknown. \nIn this haunting adaptation of the works of Edgar Allan Poe\, join the visitors of the melancholy House of Usher on a candlelit journey into the macabre. Despite their apprehensions\, a stubborn doctor\, a resentful medium\, and a murderer attend the funeral of an eccentric recluse—only to question the circumstances surrounding her untimely death. As they begin to outstay their welcome\, they uncover evidence of a connection between their disturbing pasts and the sinister presence stalking their every move. With their secrets exposed\, they must be willing to summon their ghosts to survive the supernatural forces at work\, and confront the meddlesome housekeeper who knows more than she claims.

SUMMARY:Campbell House: Relic Linear Park Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to the launch event for Relic Linear Park! \nMark your calendars for September 29 at 5 pm\, when we’ll be celebrating the completion of the first part of a new linear park system for Ward 10. \nJoin us at the park’s new Southern Gateway at Queen and Simcoe\, beside Campbell House Museum (160 Queen St W\, at Osgoode Subway). There will be coffee and cookies home-baked at the museum\, plus special guest speakers! \nThe Relic Linear Park system is a community-led vision that embraces the inclusion of architectural carved stones from Toronto’s past set within a unifying corridor of green within the Grange Neighbourhood. The relic stones were rescued from demolished downtown buildings\, then stored for decades at Scarborough’s Guild Park and Gardens. \nThe Southern Gateway of Relic Linear Park is a project of the Grange Community Association in partnership with the City of Toronto and Campbell House Museum. \nThe Southern Gateway is funded in part by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario [https://feddev-ontario.canada.ca]\, and by the City of Toronto.

SUMMARY:Campbell House Museum: Daniel Maltz - Fortepiano Concert with Vocalist Keely Rhodes
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy Haydn’s and Mozart’s piano works performed as they intended them to be heard — in a historic house on a period instrument. The June 11th concert features mezzo-soprano vocalist Keely Rhodes. \nDuring the Classical era in Vienna\, composers expected their keyboard music to entertain relatively small audiences in more intimate settings than today’s large concert halls. And\, the era’s pianos (known as “fortepianos”) are very different from modern Steinways. \nCampbell House Museum is offering you this unique chance to experience the Classical era in the Blue Ballroom\, so get your tickets now! \nFortepianist Daniel Adam Maltz is based in Vienna and studied Historical Performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London and at Vienna’s University for Music and Performing Arts. He performs on historic Viennese fortepianos\, utilizing the vast range of tones\, colours\, and techniques familiar to Classical-era composers. \nMezzo-soprano vocalist Keely Rhodes is a sought-after solo and chamber recitalist and sings in the United States\, Europe\, and Central and South America.

SUMMARY:Culinary Historians of Canada (In-Person and Virtual): Naomi Duguid Talks About Her New Book\, The Miracle of Salt
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning cookbook author Naomi Duguid talks about her latest\, The Miracle of Salt\, a “mesmerizing mix of history and recipes.” \nAbout this event \nNaomi Duguid\, who’s taken food lovers to many corners of the globe\, now invites readers and cooks on a very different journey—a deep dive into the miracle of salt and its essential role in preserving\, fermenting\, and transforming food. \nDuguid will look at salt’s history and its impact on culture and cuisine across the globe. She’ll explain how salt — the chemical — works\, how it’s used to ferment and preserve\, and how that knowledge can be used to make basics like miso\, sauerkraut and basturma. She’ll talk about what to cook with salt-preserved ingredients like salt cod\, kimchi\, fish sauce and preserved lemons and how to create a “salt pantry” with enticing blends of salt and spices. Duguid will wrap up the talk by elaborating on the ways salt transforms everything it touches\, from vegetables\, soups\, mains\, pasta dishes\, to desserts. A Q&A will follow the talk.
