SUMMARY:Halton Black History Awareness Society Emancipation Flag-Raising
DESCRIPTION:Your participation in this year’s ceremony recognizes everyone’s freedom as we are one. Yes\, we’ve suffered similar inhumanities such as our Ukraine cousins are experiencing today. It’s time to acknowledge\, appreciate\, articulate\, and activate that we do best when we work together with authenticity. \nWhat this means is implementing equality legislation\, educating our teachers to become educators\, stopping racism\, marginalization\, stereotyping\, and hate whenever and wherever it raises it’s divisive head. Our ancestors all fought for their respective ancestry and Our inhumanity. \nThe Halton Black History Awareness Society (HBHAS) is honoured to be hosting a 2022 Halton Freedom Festival\, Emancipation Pan African Flag-Raising Ceremony celebrating the 1834 British Emancipation Act which freed all colonial slaves\, initiated by Ontario’s First Lieutenant Governor\, John Graves Simcoe through the Anti-Slavery Act of 1793. It is appreciated that multi-cultures helped transport many of the “freed” slaves to Canada both through the Underground Railroad and throughout the North American continent. The Pan African flag is representative of all blacks of African Ancestry. \nThe HBHAS is appreciative of being recognized as the first city in the world to acclaim August as Emancipation month. This acclamation took place at our 2018 Halton Freedom Celebration Festival and was acknowledged at a Dr. Julius Garvey presentation in tribute to his father on Marcus Garvey Day\, at Toronto’s City Hall (2019). The City of Burlington further proclaimed\, at the HBHAS flag-raising ceremony in 2021\, recognizing August 31st the International Day for People of African Descent in alignment to the UN General Assembly 2020 resolution sponsored by 52 countries\, and a proclamation recognizing August 1st as the first Canadian National Emancipation Day. \nOur 2022 Proclamation Flag Raising Ceremony will take place on Friday\, July 22 nd from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Burlington\, City Hall and will recognize the start of the 2022 Halton Freedom Festival which includes our 5 th Annual Emancipation Art Exhibition (July 27 – September 6\, 2022) at Helson Gallery in Georgetown; and our 2022 Halton Freedom Celebration Festival\, taking place at Spencer Smith Park on July 30. Please find Artists and Musician/Event schedule at www.hbhas.ca. \nOur flag raising will incorporate a number of speakers\, Federal/Provincial and Municipal and Community Leaders welcoming the celebration of everyone’s freedom\, still in process.
