SUMMARY:West Toronto Junction Historical Society (In-Person and Virtual): Vincenzo Pietropaolo
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on October 5th as Vincenzo Pietropaolo presents his latest book Toronto as Community: Fifty Years of Photographs. \nToronto as Community represents more than fifty years of photography by Vincenzo Pietropaolo\, “one of Canada’s pre-eminent documentary photographers” (Canadian Geographic). The photographs are grouped around short essays that explore Pietropaolo’s particular interests and observations\, often questions of social justice\, which\, in turn\, inform the photographs themselves \nThis poetic portrayal of the city of Toronto documents the daily life of ordinary citizens\, at work\, at play\, in celebration\, in protest\, and in mourning. The book includes images of many parks and natural areas and some of the city’s architecture. All those who participated in Vince’s exceptional photo presentation a year ago on The Stockyards Then and Now will look forward to this showing of photos from his new book. \nDate & Time: October 5th\, 2023 at 7 pm\nLocation: St. John’s Anglican Church\, corner of Humberside Ave. and Quebec Ave.\nThis event will be on Zoom as well as in-person. We will have the Zoom details here closer to the event. \nVincenzo Pietropaolo has been a dedicated chronicler of Toronto for more than fifty years. His attachment to the city and its people is demonstrated on every page of Toronto as Community. He was a city planner with the City of Toronto for over fifteen years before turning to photography full-time. His focus lies in social documentary photography and photojournalism\, and his projects have taken him to many cities around the world. Pietropaolo is an award-winning photographer and has been deemed “one of Canada’s pre-eminent documentary photographers” by Canadian Geographic Magazine. He collaborated with Jane Jacobs by providing photographs for an exhibition based on her seminal book\, The Death and Life of Great American Cities. He and his partner live in Toronto\, where they are avid urban farmers in their own backyard.

SUMMARY:West Toronto Junction Historical Society (Virtual): Tackling the Junction’s Assessment Records – Part 2 of Researching the History of Your House
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 4\, 2023 at 7 pm for a presentation on Zoom by Jane MacNamara on using online assessment records to fill in details on the history of your house and its residents. \nAdvance registration is required. To register for the May 4 2023 presentation and meeting visit: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUucumtrzkvHdZ1IJXdgM2WxOi7DRsxwPpP. \nIf you haven’t used Toronto assessment records in your research\, you’re missing a great source to fill in the 10-year gaps between census. And now that FamilySearch.org has digitized the 19th-century assessment rolls for today’s Toronto—we can use them from home to find out more about our occupier or landholder ancestors and their communities. This session will help you figure out the wards and other divisions needed to locate a household\, and to understand what you’ve found. We’ll go beyond the flawed indexing with maps\, directories and other tools. Family Search holdings include West Toronto Junction assessment rolls from 1888 to 1899\, as well as pre-incorporation York Township from 1882. (Later years are at the City of Toronto Archives.) \nJane E. MacNamara is the author of Inheritance in Ontario: Wills and other Records for Family Historians (OGS/Dundurn) and writes about genealogy at wherethestorytakesme.ca. A longtime member of the Ontario Genealogical Society\, Jane lectures about research methodology\, Ontario\, and English family history to genealogical and historical groups throughout southern Ontario. She teaches courses for the OGS Toronto Branch\, most notably hands-on courses about Ontario records.

SUMMARY:West Toronto Junction Historical Society (Virtual): Adam Bunch\, "The Toronto Circus Riot: A True Tale of Sex\, Violence\, Corruption and Clowns"
DESCRIPTION:The strangest riot in Toronto history broke out in the summer of 1855\, sparked by a brawl at a King Street brothel. When some rowdy clowns picked a fight with a battle-hardened crew of firefighters\, they would quickly learn they’d made a terrible mistake. The circus performers found themselves facing off against Toronto’s powerful Orange Order in a bloody clash that revealed the fault lines that once violently divided our city. \nAdam Bunch is an award-winning storyteller who brings the history of Toronto and Canada to life. He’s the author of The Toronto Book of the Dead and The Toronto Book of Love\, the host of the Canadiana documentary series\, and the creator of the Toronto Dreams Project. \nADVANCED REGISTRATION REQUIRED! REGISTER AT:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpfu6przotG9ErjgvQ_AuRjDIA7mCRXLhq\nZoom then will send you Login details
