SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society: Toronto at 189 with Jesse Wente
DESCRIPTION:March 6\, 2023 is Toronto’s 189th Birthday! Celebrate in the heart of Old Town Toronto\, where the city was born. \nToronto’s First Post Office and the Town of York Historical Society invites you to take part in our annual commemoration of the day Toronto became a city: March 6\, 1834. \nAfter two-years of meeting virtually\, we are celebrating in a big way\, in person\, and returning to our previous venue at the historic St. Lawrence Hall. We’re so excited to present our very special guests: broadcaster and Indigenous advocate Jesse Wente\, with Native Earth Preforming Arts. \nOf course\, it wouldn’t be March 6th without the popular Old Town Silent Auction\, featuring many of our favourite local businesses! In addition\, we will be offering a cash bar and small plates featuring food from the vendors of St. Lawrence Market. Doors will open at 6:30pm. \nFollow us on Instagram\, Facebook\, and Twitter @TOs1stPO\, and this event #TOs189th to find out more about our performers\, food and drink sponsors\, silent auction donors and lots\, and event sponsors. \nDon’t delay! Tickets are strictly limited. You must be an existing Town of York Historical Society member for member pricing. If you would like to join or need to renew\, simply choose the membership and ticket option. \nWe appreciate the support of many community partners in this fundraiser\, including our members\, neighbours\, and friends who purchase tickets to our annual celebration. Proceeds from this event benefit the Town of York Historical Society and Toronto’s First Post Office\, a museum and National Historic Site. The Town of York Historical Society researches\, interprets\, and promotes the history of the Town of York and early Toronto\, and fosters the preservation of the Town of York’s surviving built environment.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society: Tales of Christmas Past
DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 8th for a festive evening as we learn about the Christmas traditions of days gone by! \nMany of us who celebrate Christmas have traditions that we feel are steeped and time honoured. But most of them aren’t as old as we might think. Hardly any of the Christmas traditions that we know today were widely celebrated when the Town of York was founded back in 1793\, and can instead be dated to the Victorian era. But we’ll also look back at a time\, before the Town of York even started\, that Christmas was outlawed and celebrating it was illegal. Whether you’re passionate about putting up the Christmas decorations\, or like to channel your inner Scrooge\, you’ll be sure to find something of interest in this presentation! \nAbout the Speaker: \nRichard Fiennes-Clinton has been involved in the local Toronto historical community for over 30 years. He gives walking tours all across Toronto\, but has also organized a lot of archival material\, which he uses to give illustrated talks on more than 200 years of Toronto history. He is also the author of a book called “Muddy York – A History of Toronto Until 1834”\, copies of which are available for purchase at Toronto’s First Post Office.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society (In-Person and Virtual): "An Unrecognized Contribution: Women & their work in 19th Century Toronto" with Elizabeth Gillian Muir
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce the speakers and dates for the Town of York Historical Society’s “Annual Author Series”! Presentations will begin promptly at 7pm and will be followed by a short question and answer period. This year\, you have the option between joining us via Zoom or in-person. \nAbout this event: \nElizabeth Gillian Muir will speak about her newly released book\, An Unrecognized Contribution: Women and their Work in early 19th century Toronto\, highlighting scores of women and the work they undertook during a period of great change for the city. \n“Women in nineteenth-century Toronto were integral to the life of the growing city. They contributed to the city’s commerce and were owners of stores\, factories\, brickworks\, market gardens\, hotels\, and taverns; as musicians\, painters\, and writers\, they were a large part of the city’s cultural life; and as nurses\, doctors\, religious workers\, and activists they strengthened the city’s safety net for those who were most in need. Their stories are told in this wide-ranging collection of biographies\, the result of Muir’s search of early street directories\, the first city histories\, personal diaries\, and other documents.” \nAbout the author: \nElizabeth (Liz) Gillian Muir has taught Canadian history at Waterloo University and the University of Toronto. She has written extensively about women in Upper Canada and in addition to writing non-fiction for adults\, she has also published a series of children’s books. Elizabeth holds degrees from Queen’s University\, the Harvard Business School\, and a Ph.D from McGill University.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society (In-Person and Virtual): "Schooling the System: A History of Black Women Teachers" with Dr. Funke Aladejebi
\nAbout this event: \nDr. Funké Aladejebi will speak about her most recently published book\, Schooling the System: A History of Black Women Teachers and her exploration of the intersections between race\, gender and access in Canadian educational institutions. \n“Using oral narratives to tell the story of black access and education in Ontario between the 1940s and the 1980s\, Schooling the System provides textured insight into how issues of race\, gender\, class\, geographic origin\, and training shaped women’s distinct experiences within the profession. By valuing women’s voices and lived experiences\, Dr. Funké Aladejebi illustrates that black women\, as a diverse group\, made vital contributions to the creation and development of anti-racist education in Canada.” \nAbout the Author: \nFunké Aladejebi is a scholar of the twentieth century with a specialization in Black Canadian history. In addition to being the author of her newly published book\, Schooling the System\, she is also the co-editor of Unsettling the Great White North: Black Canadian History. Her work explores the importance of Black Canadian women in sustaining their communities and preserving a distinct Black identity within restrictive gender and racial barriers. Dr. Aladejebi has been involved in a variety of community engagement and social justice initiatives in Toronto and her research interests are in oral history\, the history of education in Canada\, Black feminist thought and transnationalism.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society (Virtual): Toronto's 188th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Toronto’s 188th birthday! \nJoin us as we gather to celebrate the 188th anniversary of Toronto’s incorporation as a city. \nFeaturing presentations by: \nDON LOUCKS! Don Loucks is an architect\, urban designer\, and cultural heritage planner\, with forty years of project experience. He is committed to environmental\, economic\, and cultural sustainability\, and to preserving the variety of rich urban forms that contain the stories of our communities’ history. As a Vancouver native\, Ross was raised with preconceived notions about the city – and largely believed them – that was until he moved to Toronto in 2005 and fell in love with the place. Ross is now one of the most fervently supportive and excited fans of Toronto and has grown his Old Toronto project from a wee little Instagram account to an all encompassing Toronto historical project that never stops loving the city. \nWith special appearances from the staff of Toronto’s First Post Office and Campbell House Museum. \nAnd featuring the famous Old Town Silent Auction! \nFor the latest on the event\, see our event page here and follow our social media channels @TOs1stPO and #Toronto188 \nBonus perk! Your registration confirmation includes an exclusive discount code for 18.8% off the shop at TownofYork.com. \nWishing to sponsor this event or donate to our Silent Auction? Find out more here. \n100% of ticket sale proceeds and donations go directly to the Town of York Historical Society and Toronto’s First Post Office. \nThis year\, our annual fundraiser will be presented virtually\, allowing our viewers and participants to join us remotely and take part in the celebration from the safety and comfort of your homes. While we regret that we cannot celebrate together at St. Lawrence Hall\, be assured that yours will be the best seat in the house! \nThe aim of the event is to fundraise for the Town of York Historical Society and Toronto’s First Post Office whose purpose is researching\, interpreting\, and promoting the history of the Town of York and early Toronto\, and to advocate on behalf of the preservation of the Town of York’s surviving built environment.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society Fall Author Series: Katie Daubs ("The Missing Millionaire\, the True Story of Ambrose Small and the City Obsessed with Finding Him")
DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 2nd for the final evening in our author’s series! \nKatie Daubs will speak about how she recreated the city from the 1870s to the 1930s for her book The Missing Millionaire\, the True Story of Ambrose Small and the City Obsessed with Finding Him. \nIn December 1919\, Ambrose Small\, the mercurial owner of the Grand Opera House in Toronto\, closed a deal to sell his network of Ontario theatres\, deposited a million-dollar cheque in his bank account\, and was never seen again. As weeks turned to years\, the disappearance became the most “extraordinary unsolved mystery” of its time. In The Missing Millionaire\, Katie Daubs tells the story of the Small mystery\, weaving together a gripping narrative with the social and cultural history of a city undergoing immense change. Daubs examines the characters who were connected to the case as the century carried on: Ambrose’s religious wife\, Theresa; his long-time secretary\, Jack Doughty; his two unmarried sisters\, Florence and Gertrude; Patrick Sullivan\, a lawless ex-policeman; and Austin Mitchell\, an overwhelmed detective.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society Fall Author Series: Robin Blackburn McBride ("The Shining Fragments")
DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 18th for the next evening in our author’s series! \nJoin author Robin Blackburn McBride as she discusses Toronto’s history via a tour of selected settings and passages in her debut novel\, The Shining Fragments (Guernica\, 2018). \nRecognized as an Editors’ Choice book with the Historical Novel Society in North America\, The Shining Fragments explores the ramifications of abandonment\, obsession\, love\, memory\, and visionary power. Spanning the years 1882 – 1904\, the story follows Joseph Conlon from his early childhood in Ulster to his experiences of youth and adulthood as an Irish immigrant in Toronto. Left behind as a small boy at Union Station\, Joseph grows up in a city bleak with bigotry. He discovers that he has artistic talent and becomes a designer of stained glass windows. Joseph is haunted by the spirit of his unborn sister\, Annie\, and the powerful and often conflicting influences of the women in his life.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society Fall Author Series: Ann Birch ("Settlement")
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 21st for the next evening in our author’s series! \nIt’s common for people to tell you to write about what you know. But Ann Birch chooses to write—in three of her four novels– about real historical people who lived in York (early Toronto) in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Since she was not living at this time\, she has had to learn how to recreate a long-gone world and the people who lived in it. \nIn this presentation\, Ann will share about delving into primary sources like letters and diaries written about and by her main characters. She will also discuss the necessity of turning to secondary sources: the innumerable tomes available on the social history of the times and the people who inhabited this world. But there are many spaces omitted by historians and by the characters themselves\, and here’s where an author must be diligent in filling these spaces. Ann will talk about her constant effort to be authentic in her writing of historical fiction about York.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society 2021 AGM and Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre Centre Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 28th for our annual AGM\, from our virtual location at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theaters! \nAbout this event\nThe Town of York Historical Society will hold its Annual General Meeting on Thursday\, September 28th online via Zoom. Following the business meeting\, there will be a special talk by Ellen Flowers\, Manager of Marketing and Communications at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theater Centre\, who will give us a peek behind the curtain and speak about the theater centre and its history. \nFREE for TYHS members\, $10 for non-members. Memberships and membership renewals are available HERE. \nThe past\, the present and persistence: The story of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre \nThe Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres have had a long and storied history. From their glory days as a Vaudeville roadhouse to an MGM movie palace to their near demise and multi-million-dollar rebirth. Persistence is what has kept this “double-decker” theatre going since 1913. \nOwned and operated by the Ontario Heritage Trust\, we’ll further investigate into the Elgin and Winter Garden story and recount many interesting facts. For instance\, how many times has the Elgin changed its name and what precious artifact was lost in the theatre’s fire. We’ll also share secrets of The Winter Garden\, like why was bread dough so important to the restoration project and what was found backstage undisturbed for over 60 years. \nKnown for her comprehensive “walk-thru” theatre tours\, Ellen Flowers\, Marketing & Communications Manager will switch it up and present a “talk-thru” slide show. Join us as we travel through the years of this celebrated building. \nHow to attend:\nThis is a virtual event that will take place via Zoom. Details on how to join are included in the confirmation email. Participants can attend via computer\, tablet\, smartphone or dial-in via phone. \nAll are welcome but space is limited. Please RSVP!

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society Fall Author Series: Mark Bourrie ("Bush Runner: The Adventures of Pierre-Esprit Radisson")
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 23rd for the first evening in our author’s series! \nMark Bourrie will speak about the research process for his book Bush Runner: The Adventures of Pierre-Esprit Radisson\, which tells the extraordinary true story of the 17th-century figure\, a man more trading partner than colonizer\, a peddler of goods and not worldview—and with it offers a fresh perspective on the world in which he lived. Using Radisson’s journals\, which are the best first-hand accounts of 17th century Canada\, Bourrie will provide insight into the sources used to bring Radisson’s story to life. \nKnown to some as the first European to explore the upper Mississippi\, and widely as the namesake of ships and hotel chains\, Pierre-Esprit Radisson is perhaps best described\, writes Mark Bourrie\, as “an eager hustler with no known scruples.” Kidnapped by Mohawk warriors at the age of fifteen\, Radisson assimilated and was adopted by a powerful family\, only to escape to New York City after less than a year. After being recaptured\, he defected from a raiding party to the Dutch and crossed the Atlantic to Holland—thus beginning a lifetime of seized opportunities and frustrated ambitions.

SUMMARY:Christmas in the Town of York 2020
DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 17th for a festive evening as we learn about the Christmas traditions of days gone by! \nAbout this Event:\nMany of us who celebrate Christmas have traditions that we feel are steeped and time honoured. \nAbout the Speaker:\nRichard Fiennes-Clinton has been involved in the local Toronto historical community for over 30 years. He gives walking tours all across Toronto\, but has also organized a lot of archival material\, which he uses to give illustrated talks on more than 200 years of Toronto history. He is also the author of a book called Muddy York – A History of Toronto Until 1834\, copies of which are available for purchase at Toronto’s First Post Office.
