SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society Annual Fall Author Series 2023: Ian Radforth
DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 7th for the final evening presentation of our Annual Fall Author’s Series! \nDr. Ian Radforth will present on his publication “Jeannie’s Demise: Abortion on Trial in Victorian Toronto ” as he unveils the results of his detailed investigation of a backstreet abortion that occurred on the streets of Toronto in 1875 and its tragic consequences while exploring the story about how one woman navigated politics in Victorian Toronto\, when abortion was illegal. \nIan Radforth’s “Jeannie’s Demise” uncovers a real-life Victorian melodrama that played out in the bustling streets and courtrooms of “Toronto the Good\,” cast with all the lurid stock characters of the genre. Historian Ian Radforth brings to life an era in which abortion was illegal\, criminal proceedings were a spectator sport\, and coded advertisements for back-alley procedures ran in the margins of newspapers. Part gripping procedural\, part meticulous autopsy\, “Jeannie’s Demise” opens a rare window into the hidden history of a woman’s right to choose. \nAbout the Author:\nIan Radforth is a Canadian social historian who has taught for more than three decades in the department of history at the University of Toronto with a focus on labour and immigration history. He is the author of many historical works such as “Bushworkers and Bosses: Logging in Northern Ontario\, 1900-1980” and “Royal Spectacle: The 1860 Visit of the Prince of Wales to Canada and the United States.” Radforth has also served as the representative of the history department’s Ethnic\, Immigration\, and Pluralism Studies Program Committee.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society Annual Fall Author Series 2023: David Raymont
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 7th for the first evening presentation of our Annual Fall Author’s Series! \nDavid Raymont will present on his editorial review of William Harrison’s Memoirs that focus on the true story of the Richmond Hill Murders of 1843; the historic event that would later inspire Margaret Atwood’s novel\, “Alias Grace.” By focusing on contemporary accounts and using a variety of primary sources\, Raymont uncovers an intriguing history full of twists and turns while presenting the social aspects of public opinion towards single parents and domestic work in 1840s Ontario. \nIn 2017\, the Netflix series Alias Grace\, written and directed by Sarah Polley\, inspired David Raymont to reread\, edit\, and publish William Harrison’s memories of the Richmond Hill murders of 1843. As Harrison’s memories challenged Grace Mark’s murder confession\, David researched contemporary newspaper accounts\, the bench notes of the judge presiding over the murder trial and books recounting the murder. What he uncovered presents a far more tragic chain of events that shifts the spotlight to the story of the victims rather than that of the murderers. \nAbout the Author:\nDavid Raymont is a past director of Heritage Toronto\, a former president of the York Pioneer & Historical Society\, and a retired Ontario public servant.

Celebrate in the heart of Old Town Toronto\, where the city was born. \nToronto’s First Post Office and the Town of York Historical Society invites you to take part in our annual commemoration of the day Toronto became a city: March 6\, 1834. \nAfter two-years of meeting virtually\, we are celebrating in a big way\, in person\, and returning to our previous venue at the historic St. Lawrence Hall. We’re so excited to present our very special guests: broadcaster and Indigenous advocate Jesse Wente\, with Native Earth Preforming Arts. \nOf course\, it wouldn’t be March 6th without the popular Old Town Silent Auction\, featuring many of our favourite local businesses! In addition\, we will be offering a cash bar and small plates featuring food from the vendors of St. Lawrence Market. Doors will open at 6:30pm. \nFollow us on Instagram\, Facebook\, and Twitter @TOs1stPO\, and this event #TOs189th to find out more about our performers\, food and drink sponsors\, silent auction donors and lots\, and event sponsors. \nDon’t delay! Tickets are strictly limited. You must be an existing Town of York Historical Society member for member pricing. If you would like to join or need to renew\, simply choose the membership and ticket option. \nWe appreciate the support of many community partners in this fundraiser\, including our members\, neighbours\, and friends who purchase tickets to our annual celebration. Proceeds from this event benefit the Town of York Historical Society and Toronto’s First Post Office\, a museum and National Historic Site. The Town of York Historical Society researches\, interprets\, and promotes the history of the Town of York and early Toronto\, and fosters the preservation of the Town of York’s surviving built environment.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society: Tales of Christmas Past
DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 8th for a festive evening as we learn about the Christmas traditions of days gone by! \nMany of us who celebrate Christmas have traditions that we feel are steeped and time honoured. But most of them aren’t as old as we might think. Hardly any of the Christmas traditions that we know today were widely celebrated when the Town of York was founded back in 1793\, and can instead be dated to the Victorian era. But we’ll also look back at a time\, before the Town of York even started\, that Christmas was outlawed and celebrating it was illegal. Whether you’re passionate about putting up the Christmas decorations\, or like to channel your inner Scrooge\, you’ll be sure to find something of interest in this presentation! \nAbout the Speaker: \nRichard Fiennes-Clinton has been involved in the local Toronto historical community for over 30 years. He gives walking tours all across Toronto\, but has also organized a lot of archival material\, which he uses to give illustrated talks on more than 200 years of Toronto history. He is also the author of a book called “Muddy York – A History of Toronto Until 1834”\, copies of which are available for purchase at Toronto’s First Post Office.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society (In-Person and Virtual): "An Unrecognized Contribution: Women & their work in 19th Century Toronto" with Elizabeth Gillian Muir
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce the speakers and dates for the Town of York Historical Society’s “Annual Author Series”! Presentations will begin promptly at 7pm and will be followed by a short question and answer period. This year\, you have the option between joining us via Zoom or in-person. \nAbout this event: \nElizabeth Gillian Muir will speak about her newly released book\, An Unrecognized Contribution: Women and their Work in early 19th century Toronto\, highlighting scores of women and the work they undertook during a period of great change for the city. \n“Women in nineteenth-century Toronto were integral to the life of the growing city. They contributed to the city’s commerce and were owners of stores\, factories\, brickworks\, market gardens\, hotels\, and taverns; as musicians\, painters\, and writers\, they were a large part of the city’s cultural life; and as nurses\, doctors\, religious workers\, and activists they strengthened the city’s safety net for those who were most in need. Their stories are told in this wide-ranging collection of biographies\, the result of Muir’s search of early street directories\, the first city histories\, personal diaries\, and other documents.” \nAbout the author: \nElizabeth (Liz) Gillian Muir has taught Canadian history at Waterloo University and the University of Toronto. She has written extensively about women in Upper Canada and in addition to writing non-fiction for adults\, she has also published a series of children’s books. Elizabeth holds degrees from Queen’s University\, the Harvard Business School\, and a Ph.D from McGill University.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society (In-Person and Virtual): "Schooling the System: A History of Black Women Teachers" with Dr. Funke Aladejebi
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce the speakers and dates for the Town of York Historical Society’s “Annual Author Series”! Dr. Aladejebi has been involved in a variety of community engagement and social justice initiatives in Toronto and her research interests are in oral history\, the history of education in Canada\, Black feminist thought and transnationalism.
