DESCRIPTION:Join guest speaker\, Ingo Nessel\, FRPSC\, FRPSL\, Vice-President & Secretary\, Executive Director of the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation\, as he explores the history and release of Canada’s 1985-1989 50 cent Parliament Stamp Books. Pre-registration is required and spots are limited! \nAbout Our Speaker:  \nInternational exhibitor\, author and speaker\, Ingo G. Nessel has been collecting stamps since childhood. While growing up in his native Montreal\, early collections in the 1950’s were formed from his parents’ origin of Germany\, as well as his own roots in Canada. In addition to his home club\, the Bramalea Stamp Club\, Ingo is Past President of the Philatelic Specialists Society of Canada; a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada and the Royal Philatelic Society London. \nHe is currently Vice President at Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation. His collecting specialties include Hong Kong; Canada’s 1985-1991 50c Parliament Booklets; a topical collection of sheep; Queen Elizabeth stamp and Royal Household mail; and any philatelic stamp or cover that catches his fancy. SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society Annual Fundraiser: Banned & Brewed
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the Town of York Historical Society’s Annual Fundraiser will take place on a new date\, May 1\, 2025\, to celebrate the City of Toronto’s 191st Birthday\, ahead of Museum month. After its colonial establishment in 1793\, the Town of York was incorporated on March 6\, 1834 as the City of Toronto marking its beginnings as a booming metropolis. The date isn’t the only thing changing this year. Traditionally\, our fundraiser has taken place at St. Lawrence Hall but due to construction setbacks\, our event will now be hosted at Campbell House Museum. Due to the smaller venue capacity\, we will be offering two different ticket types\, an in-person and virtual option\, to allow for all guests to participate. Virtual guests will have access to the keynote speaker’s presentation and the silent auction. \nThe Society will mark this anniversary by diving into the captivating history of beer and the temperance movement in the Town of York and the City of Toronto\, emphasizing the changes that both sides brought to the City. Arriving in in the colony as a dashing young officer\, he further earned the public’s esteem for his roles in stemming sectarian violence\, helping others during the cholera epidemic of 1832\, and defending Toronto from rebels in 1837. In private\, he lived a life of adventure\, romance\, and tragedy more befitting a character from a Jane Austen or Bridgerton novel. Given all that\, Dr. Jane McGaughey will ask the pertinent question as to why James Fitzgibbon has become one of the more forgotten characters in Canada’s past. DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 7th for the final evening presentation of our Annual Fall Author’s Series! \nDr. Ian Radforth will present on his publication “Jeannie’s Demise: Abortion on Trial in Victorian Toronto ” as he unveils the results of his detailed investigation of a backstreet abortion that occurred on the streets of Toronto in 1875 and its tragic consequences while exploring the story about how one woman navigated politics in Victorian Toronto\, when abortion was illegal. \nIan Radforth’s “Jeannie’s Demise” uncovers a real-life Victorian melodrama that played out in the bustling streets and courtrooms of “Toronto the Good\,” cast with all the lurid stock characters of the genre. Historian Ian Radforth brings to life an era in which abortion was illegal\, criminal proceedings were a spectator sport\, and coded advertisements for back-alley procedures ran in the margins of newspapers. Part gripping procedural\, part meticulous autopsy\, “Jeannie’s Demise” opens a rare window into the hidden history of a woman’s right to choose. \nAbout the Author:\nIan Radforth is a Canadian social historian who has taught for more than three decades in the department of history at the University of Toronto with a focus on labour and immigration history. He is the author of many historical works such as “Bushworkers and Bosses: Logging in Northern Ontario\, 1900-1980” and “Royal Spectacle: The 1860 Visit of the Prince of Wales to Canada and the United States.” Radforth has also served as the representative of the history department’s Ethnic\, Immigration\, and Pluralism Studies Program Committee.

DESCRIPTION:Drop-in with your ghosts and ghouls in-training to make a fun pumpkin paper craft that will last the whole year just in time for Halloween! Participants are also welcome to write a letter to the “Great Pumpkin” who will mail them a response! All supplies will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 19th for the second evening presentation of our Annual Fall Author’s Series! \nAdam Bunch will present on his popular publication “The Toronto Book of the Dead” as he explores Toronto history through the lives lived and the deaths of those who made the ever-changing city their final resting place. \nWith morbid tales of war and plague\, duels and executions\, suicides and séances\, Toronto’s past is filled with stories whose endings were anything but peaceful. In this book\, Adam Bunch delves into these stories: from ancient First Nations burial mounds to the grisly murder of Toronto’s first lighthouse keeper; from the rise and fall of the city’s greatest Victorian baseball star to the final days of the world’s most notorious anarchist. \nAbout the Author:\nAdam Bunch is the author of The Toronto Book of the Dead and The Toronto Book of Love\, the host of the Canadiana documentary series\, and the creator of the Toronto History Weekly newsletter. He teaches history at George Brown College and his writing has appeared in The Toronto Star\, Spacing Magazine and The Huffington Post among other places. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Culture Days\, Toronto’s First Post Office will be leading a quill-writing workshop on October 14th ! Write a letter as they did in the Town of York in the 1830s. After a brief introduction to all the materials\, and a few tips on mastering quill\, ink\, and sealing wax\, you’ll have the opportunity to write your very own letter which we encourage you to mail at Toronto’s First Post Office\, Canada’s oldest purpose-built post office still in operation. Don’t forget to bring an address! \nThis Culture Days activity is free with a PWYM donation option(Pay What You May)! 100% of proceeds go to material costs for the program.
