DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker Phil Emberley \nFollowing WWII\, approximately 40\,000 Holocaust survivors resettled in Canada. (Ottawa became home to many of those Holocaust survivors and hundreds of their descendants). \nPhil’s father\, Dieter\, may be considered one of the more fortunate of those Jewish children to have experienced the dark days of 1930s Nazi Germany and the horrors of “Kristallnacht”. \nDieter was among the 10\,000 Jewish children evacuated by the British government before the start of WWII. As was the case with the majority of these children\, Dieter never saw his parents again. \nPresented in partnership with the Centre for Holocaust Education and Scholarship. \nAdmission is free. DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Michel Prévost\, renowned regional historian\, heritage advocate\, Outaouais Historical Society President\, and recipient of several scholarships \nThe Ottawa Valley has the privilege of being associated with a legendary figure whose fame goes far beyond the region’s borders. This folklore giant spent half his life here\, attracted by the forestry industry. He became a lumberjack\, log driver\, site foreman\, and master raftsman. This presentation will demystify him by exploring the different facets of this larger-than-life character. Come discover his exploits\, including the famous battle on the Union (Chaudières) Bridge where he alone beat more than 150 Shiners\, strong-arm Irishmen. Finally\, we will demonstrate that there are still many traces of him in our folklore\, toponymy\, and monuments. \nAdmission is free. DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker\nHugues Théorêt \,  Author of La Patente l’Ordre de Jacques-Cartier\, le dernier bastion du Canada français \nLike the Irish Catholics\, with the Knights of Columbus\, and the English Protestants\, with their Masonic Lodges and the Orange Order\,  French Canada had its own secret society: the Ordre de Jacques-Cartier. \nCommonly called “La Patente”\, the Order was established in 1926 in east Ottawa and would become\, for five decades\, the sword and shield of all French Canada. \nAdmission is free. All are welcome to attend. \nPlease note: this presentation will be conducted in French.
