SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society Annual Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Tour Leaders: Patrick Okens and Lance Gleich\n\nTopic: “Could the Humber River Have Become Brûlé Lake?”\nTime: 1:30 pm \nPlease mark your calendars for the FREE annual walking tour of the Swansea Historical Society\, scheduled between 1:30 and 3:30 pm on Saturday afternoon\, June the 8th\, 2024. \nIn 1929\, a coalition of amateur sports leaders called for the creation of a grand rowing-regatta course on the lower Humber River between Bloor Street and Lake Ontario. Had it happened\, the largely natural river we experience today would have been transformed into a two-kilometre-long recreational area with significant implications for local development\, as well as the environment and future natural disasters including Hurricane Hazel. This walk will explore the story of “Brûlé Lake” by walking the length of the course. We will explore how it almost came to be\, what it could have meant\, why the effort failed\, and how the saga could be viewed as symbolic of the end of the predominance of amateur sports in favour of professional sports in Toronto. \nThe walk will be co-led by Patrick Okens\, whose career in sport has included management roles at Row Ontario\, Vancouver 2010\, and Toronto 2015. His book Blues Before Sunrise: Rowing at the University of Toronto was published in 2023. Walk co-leader Lance Gleich has a life membership in the Swansea Historical Society and has been leading its annual walks since 2014. He is currently president of Heritage York\, vice-president of DynaRail\, and secretary of Walk Toronto. \nThe walk will begin at the Rousseaux Site off the South Kingsway\, where parking is available. The starting location is on the south side of the Petro-Canada station at the foot of South Kingsway.  It is also just across the South Kingsway from the Ripley Avenue stop on the 77 Swansea bus\, and a short walk from the 501 Queen streetcar. The walk will end near the Old Mill subway station\, where paid parking is available. A more direct walk between the starting and finishing locations is possible via Bloor Street and Riverside Drive. \nMore information can be found at the Eventbrite link here: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.ca/e/walking-tour-could-the-humber-river-have-become-brule-lake-tickets-885330245597?aff=oddtdtcreator \nWe hope you can join us on Saturday.  All are welcome\, and there is no admission charge. \nSwansea Historical Society

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society - May 1 Meeting BRICK by BRICK: Swansea Public School\, 1890-2020
DESCRIPTION:We hope you can join us for the next monthly meeting of the Swansea Historical Society\, scheduled for 7:30 pm\, Wednesday\, May 1\, 2024.  The meeting will be held in the Rousseau Room of the Swansea Town Hall.  \n\n \n\nIn our final meeting before we break for the summer\, the Swansea Historical Society welcomes speaker Chris Higgins.   In seventeen years as a teacher at Swansea Public School\, Chris curated the school archives as a hobby. Upon his retirement in 2020\, he decided to leave a record behind.  Adding files from the City of Toronto Archives\, Toronto Star\, and Globe and Mail\, as well as input from the community and rare documents\, Chris’s book\, BRICK by BRICK: Swansea Public School\, 1890-2020\, was the result and it forms the topic of our May 1 meeting.\n\n\nBrick by Brick adds important chapters to the story of Toronto.  Students of Swansea Public School were residents of a suburban village before the Village of Swansea was absorbed by Canada’s largest urban centre in 1967.   The school had been built in a prime spot in 1890\, where it remains a perfect place to learn and play.  Over time\, the school has faced its share of challenges\, including wars\, and pandemics\, and 130-odd years of growth and change. \nIn addition to Brick by Brick\, Chris has also published Riverstoryz: Conversations on the Humber and he is currently working on a third book\, one that marries his love of history and true crime\, entitled Hanging on Every Word: Toronto in the Age of Execution. \n\n \nThe meeting will be conducted in a hybrid format so that participants can attend in-person at the Swansea Town Hall or connect on-line using the Zoom tool.  Here (and on the SHS website) is the link for joining the meeting on-line.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHS – May Meeting\n\n\nTime: May 1\, 2024 07:15 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/89216911799?pwd=ZWy3pXxxkHi60B3t4XzZy3QTKWlLBg.1\n\nMeeting ID: 892 1691 1799\nPasscode: 333003\n\n\n\nThe Zoom connection will be open by 7:15 pm on May 1.  If possible\, we suggest that on-line participants start tuning in as soon as the link is open\, so that we can be ready to kick off the meeting at 7:30 pm sharp.\n\n\n\n\n\nAll are welcome!!

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society (Virtual): Robert Home Smith\, Riverside Drive\, and the Humber Valley Developments
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that our speaker for March and April will be Richard Jordan. We thoroughly enjoyed Richard’s presentation to the Swansea Historical Society in November 2019 on the subject of Hurricane Hazel\, and we are delighted that he has consented to return (virtually) to join us in Swansea in the coming months. \nRichard Jordan is a former President of the Etobicoke Historical Society. \nA seasoned writer and an exciting and entertaining speaker\, for seven years Richard contributed a local history column to the Toronto Star. His feature articles on various topics have appeared in the Saturday Star\, the Sunday Star\, and international history and genealogy magazines. He has made hundreds of presentations on local history in various venues\, and now that he is retired\, his repertoire also includes his experiences travelling the world. \nThe topic of Richard’s March 1 presentation will be Robert Home Smith\, Riverside Drive\, and the Humber Valley Developments. Robert Home Smith was a fascinating and mutli-faceted Toronto character in the early 1900s\, a lawyer by training\, a civic leader\, an international investor\, and a property developer who was also a natural-born town planner with a vision and an eye for architecture. Among his many contributions to Toronto’s history were the development of a series of elegant west-end neighbourhoods including The Kingsway\, Baby Point\, Humber Valley Village\, and Swansea’s Riverside Drive area. \nIn April\, Richard will share his knowledge of the history of Etobicoke’s three lakeshore communities\, Mimico\, New Toronto\, and Long Branch. The three former municipalities share many things\, including the streetcars of Lake Shore Boulevard West and the beautiful shores of Lake Ontario\, but they have very different histories. Mimico is an older town\, once the home of palatial estates. New Toronto had its start as a gritty industrial suburb. And Long Branch began as a gated\, upper-class cottage community and resort in Victorian times. No doubt\, in each case you will see many parallels with the history of Swansea. Richard invites us to come take a pleasant journey with him along the lake and hear stories about the people and neighborhoods of Etobicoke’s Historic Lakeshore. \nHERE ARE THE LINKS FOR THE MARCH 1 VIRTUAL MEETING ON ZOOM.\nThe link will be open shortly after 7:30 pm and we are suggesting that people sign in before 8 pm so that we can get the meeting started promptly at 8. \nMarch 1\, 2023 – 8 p.m. start\, however accessible at 7:30: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/89694421653?pwd=bTJWUUsvY0NlMjZWL1FNd0ZIVmRuQT09 \nMeeting ID: 896 9442 1653\nPasscode: 363568

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society (Virtual): John Goddard — Toronto’s Early History Treasures
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that our speaker for February will be John Goddard. We thoroughly enjoyed John’s Zoom presentation The Man with the Black Valise to the Swansea Historical Society in November 2021\, and we are delighted that he has consented to return (virtually) to join us in Swansea February 2023. \nJohn Goddard is a seasoned news reporter and magazine writer. He is also the author of many books\, including The Man with the Black Valise: Tracking the Killer of Jessie Keith [the topic of John’s 2021 SHS talk] \, and Inside Hamilton’s Museums. \nThe topic of John’s February 1\, 2023 presentation will be Toronto’s Early History Treasures. \nWhen he left the Toronto Star a few years ago\, John delved into the City’s early-history museums. Not being a car owner\, he used public transit to visit the many\, widely-scattered sites. They proved a revelation\, but he had one complaint — after each visit he wanted to know more. When he learned there was no guidebook to buy\, not even a pamphlet to take away\, he resolved to write the book he wanted to read. In this presentation\, he focuses on what he calls “the most prized objects” from six museums\, artifacts of special value that illuminate life in early Toronto. \nWe hope John’s talk will inspire you to visit Toronto’s history museums and view these items for yourself!! \nWe suggest that you tune in to the meeting shortly before 8 pm on February 1\, 2023\, so that we can get started on time. SHS events are open to members and guests alike. Please forward this information to anyone you think might be interested. \nZoom details: \nTopic: Swansea Historical Society February Meeting — John Goddard — Toronto’s Early History Treasures\nTime: Feb 1\, 2023\, 8:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/88400904271?pwd=UEpuNWVPNllhOG16aFVibHNBSTE1UT09 \nMeeting ID: 884 0090 4271\nPasscode: 170792 \nTo join by telephone\, find your local number at: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kcTeM3Kfxf

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society Presents "Sir Frederick Banting: The Man You Thought You Knew"
DESCRIPTION:Grant Maltman\, the Curator of the Banting House National Historic Site of Canada in London\, Ontario\, will be speaking on the subject of Sir Frederick Banting: The Man You Thought You Knew. \nMost of us know of Sir Frederick Banting (1895-1941) as the co-discoverer of insulin\, but there is much more to his story! Frederick Banting once wrote\, “Insulin was but a means to an end”. After receiving Canada’s first Nobel Prize\, insulin did indeed become a means to an end for him. Unfortunately for Banting\, that end was a legacy from which he often desperately attempted to distance himself. \nThe story of Frederick Banting is well known but not necessarily known well. While his name has become synonymous with the discovery of insulin\, there was far more to this distinguished Canadian’s career than the often-simplified events of the insulin period. Grant Maltman will highlight the centenary of insulin and introduce other aspects of Banting’s life and career\, including his service in both World Wars\, his use of art as an escape\, and his role as a catalyst for Canada’s military and medical research programmes. \nWe suggest that you tune in to the meeting shortly before 8 pm on November 2\, so that we can get started on time. \nZoom info: \nTime: Nov 2\, 2022 08:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nTo join the Zoom Meeting\, go to:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/86074430910?pwd=S2xDTVVQc0NoaEl3MmZYSU9rdnJqQT09 \nMeeting ID: 860 7443 0910\nPasscode: 172555 \nTo join by telephone\, find your local number at:  https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kcohQYhyAK

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society March 2019 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: John Maniezzo – “When Swansea Was Dry” \nDid you know that the sale of alcoholic beverages was prohibited in the Province of Ontario between 1916 and 1927\, or that some municipalities\, including Swansea\, were “dry” for even longer periods of time\, under a provision known as “Local Option”? A restaurant partly in Swansea and partly in York Township could serve alcohol in the back half but not the front half. For many years it was thought that the south side of Bloor Street between Jane and Runnymede was legally “dry”\, when in fact it was not. John Maniezzo will talk about these and other quirky stories as he explores the history of alcohol sales in Swansea and its neighbouring municipalities.
