SUMMARY:Oakville Historical Society Speaker Night - The story of St. Mary's Pioneer Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Hello everyone! \nPlease join us for our first Speaker Night of the year. \nWhen: Wednesday – February 19\, 2025 – 7:30 PM \nWhere: The Coach House on the Erchless Estate (corner of King and Navy) \nWhat: The story of St. Mary’s Pioneer Cemetery. \nFor those interested in Oakville history\, cemeteries\, and genealogical research\, come hear the fascinating story of St. Mary’s Pioneer Cemetery. In 2020\, Ms. Terry Murphy and Mr. Michael Johnson set themselves a goal to find out something about every stone in this park-like home to some of Oakville’s oldest residents. \nThe names on these monuments became people whose stories they felt deserved attention. Here lie people who weathered the crises of the past two centuries\, gave birth to families\, started businesses that laid the foundations of Oakville\, and built the community we have inherited. The worn and broken stones called out with particular poignancy. Who were the individuals who donated their hard-earned money to erect\, with such deep affection\, these memorials to their loved ones? \nTerry will review the “detective” tools they found most helpful in identifying many previously illegible (and even buried) stones. What began as a challenge became a labour of love\, as the residents of the cemetery became family. The more they researched\, the more they realized how story-rich the cemetery is and how important it is to preserve pioneer cemeteries. \nPlease come early as seating is limited. \nSee you all there!

SUMMARY:Oakville Historical Society Speakers Night: Cameos\, did you know?
DESCRIPTION:Where: Coach House \nThe Coach House is located next door to the Oakville Historical Society office. The address is 114 King Street. Entrance is through the park side sliding doors. \nTopic: Cameos\, did you know? \nWhen: Monday\, May 27th\, at 07:30 pm \nWhat: Marie Descent will be talking about Cameos \nMarie\, a pharmacist by profession\, has always had a keen interest in gemstones. After taking several gemmology courses\, she developed a deep appreciation for antique jewellery\, fell into its rabbit hole\, and ultimately\, discovered the side tunnel of cameos. \nCameos have been around for thousands of years and there is a lot more than meets the eye when looking at them\, from the different materials from which they are crafted\, through their uses and the diverse subject matter they depict\, to how styles have evolved over the years. In short\, they are more than grandma’s old brooch. \nWhile reading and studying everything that she could about these miniature works of art\, Marie has become a passionate cameo enthusiast and collector. If you ask her how many she has\, she’ll sheepishly reply: “not enough”. \nWhile she doesn’t call herself an expert\, Marie has acquired much knowledge on cameos and is happy to share this with you. \nSo\, let Marie entertain you with things you might not have known about the world of cameos. You may say\, “Well\, I didn’t know that”!

SUMMARY:Oakville Historical Society Speakers' Night - “Outside the Gate: The True Story of a British Home Child in Canada”
DESCRIPTION:Join by Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/3614629408?pwd=dnp2a0R3TGEySXgzVmdpR0NRendIQT09 \nWednesday\, February 15th\, 2023  7:20 pm. – 9:00 pm. \nBetween 1869 and 1932\, over 100\,000 children were sent from Britain to Canada through assisted juvenile emigration. These migrants are called “home children” because most went from an emigration agency’s home for children in Britain to its Canadian receiving home. The children were placed with families in rural Canada. \nThe children were promised a bright future in the land of opportunity\, and some managed to make a good life\, but many were abused\, neglected and reviled by those who took them in. Although most still had families back home\, reunification was discouraged. One of those children was Winnie Cooper. Born in Scarborough\, Yorkshire in 1908\, she was sent at age twelve to Barnardo’s Village Home for Girls near London. Three years later\, Winnie was shipped off to a farm in rural Ontario. Nothing back in England had prepared her for working the rough land in Canada\, but despite the long days\, isolation\, and bitterly cold winters\, Winnie’s natural wit and cheery disposition helped her find love and friendship. Yet she always dreamed of returning to her mother in Yorkshire. \nThe story\, told by her granddaughter\, author Carol Marie Newall\, is a family saga of love and loss\, pain and joy as Winnie struggled to find her place in a young inhospitable country. It’s also a revealing portrayal of a troubling chapter in Canadian and British history.
