SUMMARY:North York Historical Society April 2023 Meeting: Nate Hendley on The Beatle Bandit
DESCRIPTION:Nate Hendley is a Toronto-based journalist and true-crime author. His most recent book\, The Beatle Bandit\, won the Crime Writers of Canada Award of Excellence for Non-Fiction 2022. Nate has also written books about gangsters\, cons and hoaxes\, and bandit duo Bonnie and Clyde. For more information about Nate’s books and background\, visit his website at www.natehendley.com. \nThe Beatle Bandit: A Serial Bank Robber’s Deadly Heist\, A Cross-Country Manhunt\, and the Insanity Plea that Shook the Nation \nMatthew Kerry Smith was a troubled navy veteran who robbed Toronto-area banks in the early 1960s to finance a one-man revolution. On July 24\, 1964\, disguised in a Halloween mask and a “Beatle” wig\, Smith held up a bank at Bathurst Manor Plaza in North York\, Ontario. Smith killed a patron who tried to intervene\, then escaped. Dubbed “The Beatle Bandit” by the media\, Smith’s actions fueled a nationwide debate about gun control\, insanity pleas\, and the death penalty. \nThe book\, The Beatle Bandit\, written by Nate Hendley and published in November 2021 by Dundurn Press\, details Smith’s life. \nThis is an in-person program. No registration required. \nThis program is co-sponsored by the North York Historical Society and the Society and Recreation department of the North York Central Library.

SUMMARY:North York Historical Society November 2021 Meeting: “HMS Ontario – Lost and Found" with Ray Peacock
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Ray Peacock \nRay Peacock will talk of the historical background leading to the building and launch of the ship near what is now Kingston in 1780\, her involvement in the defence of the border\, and her subsequent loss and discovery in Lake Ontario. His slides include stills of the sunken ship when she was found and of his not-yet-completed model. \nBorn and brought up in the village of Port Sunlight\, the home of the soap company Lever Brothers\, near the city of Liverpool\, Ray has always lived near the sea and large lakes. As a boy he would often take the “Ferry ‘cross the Mersey” from Birkenhead to Liverpool\, where he watched the ships that plied their trade from the wharves and docks of the city that grew on ship building and the commerce of the world\, and which was the control centre of Atlantic Naval operations during WWII\, known as “The Western Approaches”. He was also not far from the entrance to the Manchester Ship Canal\, and would spend time watching the freighters of the world as they passed\, opening the inland City of Manchester to international trade. \nRay took a degree in Food Technology in London. He followed this with a career\, first in the meat industry\, then in the chocolate business. Ray and his family lived in a village near the ancient City of York\, with a history dating back to Viking and Roman times\, and an area hotly contested during the Civil War. Ray\, his wife and three children were “exported” to Canada in 1971 by his company\, and became Vice-president of Manufacturing of the Canadian branch of Rowntrees\, the makers of Kit Kat\, Coffee Crisp\, Smarties\, Black Magic and After Eight Mints. \nHe took up ship modeling as a hobby during our Canadian winters\, initially building from kits\, but later graduating to scratch building. Ray is a member of Metro Marine Modellers\, https://metromarine.org/ a club which has three divisions\, Static\, Scale and Sail\, which reflect the diverse range of vessels being modelled. \nIn addition to building his own models Ray also restores old and damaged models for private individuals and public institutions\, to museum-quality standards of accuracy and finish of hulls and rigging. His Admiralty-style model of the 22-gun ship HMS “Ontario”\, a “snow” which sank in the Lake in 1780\, was built after considerable research\, is considered to be the authentic model of the ship. \n\nThere is no need to pre-register. SUMMARY:Virtual Video Tour of Woodland Cultural Centre (Mohawk Institute Residential School)
DESCRIPTION:The Mohawk Institute is one of a handful of Residential School buildings left standing in Canada; one of two in Ontario. It is the only one that offered in-person guided tours of the building until its closure for repairs in 2016. To meet the demand for tours and continue to fulfill our mandate to educate\, Woodland Cultural Centre pivoted to offering virtual video tours. \nThe virtual tour follows our guide\, Lorrie Gallant\, into the school\, where she provides insight and information into the 140-year history of Mohawk Institute Residential School. During the tour you will see inside the building as Lorrie takes you through the girls’ and boys’ dormitories\, the cafeteria\, laundry room\, and more. In addition\, you will hear first-hand accounts from five Survivors of the Mohawk Institute. \nDuring the tour you may hear things that some viewers will find traumatic. We ask that you prepare yourselves for what you are about to witness and take time for self-care. For those of you working from home please be aware this tour is not suitable for children under 14 years of age and ask that you find a location in your home where you may watch the video without the presence of any children in your care. \n\nThere is no need to pre-register. Please join North York Historical Society on the day! \nJoin the Zoom meeting by computer: \nhttps://zoom.us/j/95741361539?pwd=OW5PYlYwaHNPZWd2ZWxHRThLQmVWZz09\nMeeting ID: 957 4136 1539\nPasscode: 556581 \n-or- \nJoin by phone: \n+1 647 374 4685 Canada\n+1 647 558 0588 Canada\nFind your local number: https://zoom.us/u/aSPosq1tk\nMeeting ID: 957 4136 1539

SUMMARY:North York Historical Society May 2021 Meeting: “SNATCHED! The Unusual Kidnapping of Beer Tycoon John Labatt” with Susan Goldenberg
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Susan Goldenberg\, NYHS Director \nThe kidnapping in 1934 of John Sackville Labatt\, president of the big internationally well-known Labatt’s beer company\, of London\, Ontario\, set several firsts in Canadian history. Labatt was the first important Canadian to be kidnapped\, the first to be kidnapped for a high ransom\, equivalent to $3 million today. It was the first kidnapping in Canada to come to trial. Kidnapping is a very serious\, nasty crime and a wrong man was convicted. \nBut there was also bizarre humour which made it a very unusual kidnapping.

SUMMARY:North York Historical Society April 2021 Meeting: "Memories of North York" with Bill Aird
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Bill Aird\, VP of the NYHS Board \nWWI was followed by a rapid expansion of the city of Toronto. The growth of population north of the city limits quickly caused problems with the largely agricultural region north of the city. For a number of reasons which will become evident in this talk this led to the beginning of North York as a region separate from York County. \nNorth York had a unique history during the Great Depression. WWII was followed by a great urbanization; changing North York from a rural farming area to the current urban giant. You may be reminded of fond memories\, or things you didn’t remember or even things you didn’t know about North York. Enjoy!
