DESCRIPTION:Through the captivating stories of four resilient women\, explore two centuries of history in The Ward\, Toronto’s “first immigrant neighbourhood.” This walking tour breathes life into lesser-known chapters in the city’s past with theatrical presentations of the lives of Cecelia Jane Reynolds\, Elizabeth Neufeld\, Annie Whelan\, and Jean Lumb. Led by John Lorinc and Tatum Taylor Chaubal\, witness The Ward like you’ve never seen it before. \nDeveloped in collaboration with John Lorinc and Tatum Taylor Chaubal. \nWHAT TO EXPECT\nDuring the tour\, participants will encounter these four women through a series of live theatrical presentations: \nCecelia Reynolds – a young Black woman who escaped enslavement as a teenager through the Niagara region with the help of the Underground Railroad. Cecelia settled in Toronto’s Ward neighbourhood and started a new life\, all while corresponding with her former enslaver in an attempt to purchase her mother’s freedom.\nWritten by Audrey Dwyer\, Performed by Krystle Chance \nElizabeth Neufeld – a young Jewish social worker who was the executive director of Central Neighbourhood House\, an organization dedicated to bettering the lives of the residents of the Ward. Energetic and outspoken\, Elizabeth advocated for social programs and services for newcomers regardless of ethnicity\, faith\, or creed.\nWritten and Performed by Coleen MacPherson \nAnnie Whelan – a widowed Irish woman who became a bootlegger during the prohibition to support her family. Annie ran a speakeasy out of her own home\, and was able to skirt fines and law enforcement for over two decades of this operation.\nWritten by Ali Joy Richardson\, Performed by Rebecca De La Cour \nJean Lumb – a Chinese restaurateur who was a life-long advocate for the rights of Chinese people in Toronto and Canada. Owner of the Kwong Chow Chop Suey House and recipient of the Order of Canada\, Jean galvanized fellow community members around saving the city’s original Chinatown from destruction and played a pivotal role in challenging the restrictive immigration laws of the time.\nWritten by Marjorie Chan\, Performed by Julia Hune-Brown

Led by John Lorinc and Tatum Taylor Chaubal\, witness The Ward like you’ve never seen it before. \nDeveloped in collaboration with John Lorinc and Tatum Taylor Chaubal. \nWHAT TO EXPECT\nDuring the tour\, participants will encounter these four women through a series of live theatrical presentations: \nCecelia Reynolds – a young Black woman who escaped enslavement as a teenager through the Niagara region with the help of the Underground Railroad. Cecelia settled in Toronto’s Ward neighbourhood and started a new life\, all while corresponding with her former enslaver in an attempt to purchase her mother’s freedom.\nWritten by Audrey Dwyer\, Performed by Krystle Chance \nElizabeth Neufeld – a young Jewish social worker who was the executive director of Central Neighbourhood House\, an organization dedicated to bettering the lives of the residents of the Ward. Energetic and outspoken\, Elizabeth advocated for social programs and services for newcomers regardless of ethnicity\, faith\, or creed.\nWritten and Performed by Coleen MacPherson \nAnnie Whelan – a widowed Irish woman who became a bootlegger during the prohibition to support her family. Annie ran a speakeasy out of her own home\, and was able to skirt fines and law enforcement for over two decades of this operation.\nWritten by Ali Joy Richardson\, Performed by Rebecca De La Cour \nJean Lumb – a Chinese restaurateur who was a life-long advocate for the rights of Chinese people in Toronto and Canada. Owner of the Kwong Chow Chop Suey House and recipient of the Order of Canada\, Jean galvanized fellow community members around saving the city’s original Chinatown from destruction and played a pivotal role in challenging the restrictive immigration laws of the time.\nWritten by Marjorie Chan\, Performed by Julia Hune-Brown

All of these artists will speak to their Italian experience\, and how these brave Italian immigrant women\, The Quiet Immigrants\, influenced their bodies of work. Guided by a moderator and through open-forum and participatory discussion\, ArtistsTALK is sure to teach\, touch\, and captivate attendees. \nThe first Tavola Talk is being presented as part of Myseum Intersections. DESCRIPTION:WALKING TOUR\n\nWe Are All Treaty People\n\nThe Indigenous peoples of this area view the treaty relationship as one between nations but also between human beings and all other beings inhabiting the land\, water and air we share. Our Indigenous history walk will link stories about the Huron-Wendat\, Seneca\, and the Mississaugas to places and people along Black Creek. By learning this history of where we live\, we will deepen our understanding of how we should live to protect our home and each other. We will visit a Four Directions garden\, Skennen’kó:wa Gamig house on YorkU campus\, and the area where a Huron-Wendat village of longhouses existed in the 1400s\, surrounded by corn fields. We’ll use the “Moccasin Identifier” to help show the connection to the land of each major Indigenous group linked to Toronto\, and ask each other about the footprint we want to leave. \nMeeting point: South-East corner of Jane and Steeles W.\nTour ends at Driftwood Park.\n2-5pm

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of The Quiet Immigrant Project! Our Opening Day includes the full launch of our multimedia legacy exhibit and the InHERitance Art Exhibit\, where attendees will have the opportunity to walk through and participate in both the exhibit and gallery. Filled with interactive and hands-on stations\, you will find opportunity for personal artistic expression through participation. At the exhibit launch\, you will find yourself immersed in culture and reminiscent of experience by way of symbolic and touching music\, presented in both English and Italian. Finally\, a beautiful performance – a commissioned theatre piece – that explores and represents the stories of The Quiet Immigrant. A promising afternoon with food and drink\, and a room filled with love\, laughter\, and stories to share.

DESCRIPTION:Living from the Land & Water: a food-themed walk exploring connections between growing food\, land\, water and our own health. We’ll visit community gardens and Black Creek Community Farm\, and speak to leaders about their food-growing and developing food sovereignty with culturally appropriate foods for all. The tour will end at the site of the 15th-century Wendat longhouse village beside Black Creek where their large fields grew the “Three Sisters” of corn\, beans and squash to support their community\, asking what can we learn about supporting our community’s food needs today. \nMeeting point: South-East corner of Jane and Steeles W.\nTour ends at Driftwood Park at 5pm.

SUMMARY:Myseum: Black Creek Walks\, Talks & Dances: Walking Tour 1
DESCRIPTION:The Living Creek: an immersive dance experience taking place along Black Creek in our community. Centred around the theme of animism and art\, M-DO/KathakToronto instructor Joanna de Souza\, spoken word poet Ayesha Khan\, and a troupe of talented Kathakas will teach those joining this walk about the ancient Goddess Saraswati. We’ll share tales of this goddess of art\, wisdom and nature who is also the namesake of a long-disappeared river in India. Honouring the feminine and the sacredness of water\, the walk will culminate in a multicultural moon ceremony\, performed under the April full moon around a sacred fire. \nMeeting point: Derrydowns Park parking lot\nTour ends at Driftwood Park at 4pm.

DESCRIPTION:Join the exhibiting artists of Resistance. Resilience. Revolution. – Gloria C. Swain\, Lillian Allen\, Mosa NcNeilly\, and Janice Reid – for a roundtable conversation where they share their experiences working and living as artists and active members of the Black community in Toronto. This talk will be moderated by Raven Spiratos \nLivestreamed from Black Artists’ Network in Dialogue (BAND Gallery)\, this conversation highlights contributions of older Black women to benefit a ‘new generation’ of Black community artists\, activists\, allies\, historians and community-at-large. \nResistance. Resilience. Revolution. is an exhibition weaving the narratives of radical older Black women\, highlighting and resisting the way this group is often excluded and unacknowledged. Each artist’s story unfolds through their various artforms (photography\, poetry\, visual art\, mixed media\, interdisciplinary artforms)\, to translate the struggles of aging and staying relevant in a youth-obsessed world.

SUMMARY:Myseum of Toronto: Confinement and Contagion: Health and Harm Reduction Inside of Canadian Prisons – Informational Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop\, led by Sena Hussain and Prisoners with HIV/AIDS Support Action Network (PASAN)\, will explore the impacts of unequal access to health care and harm reduction measures that prisoners face across Turtle Island. We will also look at how COVID-19 has stressed the carceral system in unprecedented ways and how this pandemic has manifested in creating great harm to people inside. A discussion of an article in Cell Count\, a health and harm reduction resource for prisoners\, will then take place to look at the experiences and mindset of someone who has been carrying out a life sentence to create further understanding of the prison experience. Participants will discuss ways that people on the outside can be in solidarity with those fighting for their rights on the inside.
