DESCRIPTION:Experience this unique outdoor art installation\, woven throughout the forest of Black Creek Community Farm. \nJourney through Indigenous art\, ceremony\, and perspectives on land stewardship. SweetWater is an outdoor art installation\, woven throughout the forest of Black Creek Community Farm. \nThis is a unique opportunity to see the exhibition as led by artists from the Sweet Grass Roots Collective. \nThese artist-led tours run every thirty minutes between 2pm and 4pm at Black Creek Community Farm. \nAbout SweetWater \nThis unique installation explores maple tapping from an Indigenous perspective and honours the maple’s sweetwater through ceremony and art. In a guided walk through Black Creek Community Farm’s forest\, you’ll experience traditional Indigenous maple baskets and settler-style aluminum maple buckets which have been Indigenized through visual art and audio soundscapes. \nThrough sound\, song and sweetwater\, this experience invites you to make meaningful change as a treaty person yourself.

Be a part of the first audience to test this experimental game! \nIn order to join this unique test group\, you’ll need a smartphone\, a set of headphones\, and a keen curiosity to explore the early stages of this unconventional new game. \nOn this Nuville tour\, you’ll test a live-action-role-playing game directed through your phone. You’ll role-play with fellow attendees as Nuville citizens who are on a mission to hack the city’s “algorithm.” You’ll be directed to complete a series of tasks that challenge the flow of urban life by rebuilding your relationship to place\, presence and humanness. \nStep into the world of Nuville. \nIn the world of Nuville\, you live in a future where the planet’s population has found refuge from the climate crisis in a megacity built by artificial intelligence. Built on robotic intelligence\, productivity is the name of the game – but at what cost to humanity? \nWhile Nuville appears to be the high-tech city of our dreams\, humans have become disconnected from city-building\, history\, the environment\, and each other. Wanting to reconnect\, you join a collective of citizens-turned-hackers\, called “Hacker D-Central\,” who want to hack the system and make Nuville more human.

Curated by Tobaron Waxman\, this exhibition explores a selection of trans histories of resilience in Toronto from the 1950s to the 1990s \nWaxman offers a unique lens into Toronto’s trans community histories\, focusing on the fight for access to trans-aware health care\, language\, imagery\, and mutual aid. The ArQuives Trans Collections collects memories\, art\, and documents to share histories of community activism and trans triumphs under extreme circumstances. \nThe ArQuives’ Trans Collection is a resource and catalyst for those who strive for a future world where LGBTQ2+ people are accepted\, valued\, and celebrated.

DESCRIPTION:Part of the Intersections Festival 2023 collection \nNo Silence on Race + the Ontario Jewish Archives invite you to the launch of this unique exhibition as a part of the Intersections festival. \nLearn about the ways that multi-ethnic Jewish people in Ontario share their experiences and explore ideas of representation\, intersectionality\, ethnicity\, race\, and sexuality.\nWe’ll be celebrating the launch of this exhibition with a roundtable discussion\, performances from some of Periphery’s participants\, and food + drink. \nPeriphery\, the documentary\, was filmed and photographed two years ago. Where is Toronto’s Jewish community now with these conversations both within and outside of Jewish communal spaces? And\, how do their experiences continue to translate within the context of the city? Led by John Lorinc and Tatum Taylor Chaubal\, witness The Ward like you’ve never seen it before. \nDeveloped in collaboration with John Lorinc and Tatum Taylor Chaubal. \nWHAT TO EXPECT\nDuring the tour\, participants will encounter these four women through a series of live theatrical presentations: \nCecelia Reynolds – a young Black woman who escaped enslavement as a teenager through the Niagara region with the help of the Underground Railroad. Cecelia settled in Toronto’s Ward neighbourhood and started a new life\, all while corresponding with her former enslaver in an attempt to purchase her mother’s freedom.\nWritten by Audrey Dwyer\, Performed by Krystle Chance \nElizabeth Neufeld – a young Jewish social worker who was the executive director of Central Neighbourhood House\, an organization dedicated to bettering the lives of the residents of the Ward. Energetic and outspoken\, Elizabeth advocated for social programs and services for newcomers regardless of ethnicity\, faith\, or creed.\nWritten and Performed by Coleen MacPherson \nAnnie Whelan – a widowed Irish woman who became a bootlegger during the prohibition to support her family. Annie ran a speakeasy out of her own home\, and was able to skirt fines and law enforcement for over two decades of this operation.\nWritten by Ali Joy Richardson\, Performed by Rebecca De La Cour \nJean Lumb – a Chinese restaurateur who was a life-long advocate for the rights of Chinese people in Toronto and Canada. Owner of the Kwong Chow Chop Suey House and recipient of the Order of Canada\, Jean galvanized fellow community members around saving the city’s original Chinatown from destruction and played a pivotal role in challenging the restrictive immigration laws of the time.\nWritten by Marjorie Chan\, Performed by Julia Hune-Brown

DESCRIPTION:An online theatrical experience revisiting the 1851 North American Convention of Coloured Freemen\, where past and present collide. \nBack by popular demand! Welcome to 1851: Spirit & Voice\, a theatrical and playful revisiting of the 1851 North American Convention of Coloured Freemen. Through this work written by playwright Luke Reece\, step into the world of a fictionalized digital conference where the past and present collide. \nLive from St. Lawrence Hall\, Marie and Anthony host a retrospective look at the gathering of 19th century abolitionists in Toronto\, when their event is crashed by ghosts of conventions past. Together our characters grapple with the way history has been written\, as well as issues that affect Black lives today. Watch leading historical figures Mary Ann Shadd Cary\, Henry and Mary Bibb\, and Frederick Douglass share their unfiltered thoughts on historical storytelling and 21st century anti-Black racism. Choose to join in depth conversations about racism\, microaggressions\, and the use of artistic expression as a means of inspiring change. \nThis event includes a talk written by Dr. Naila Keleta-Mae\, “On Safety\, Glass Ceilings\, and Feminism\,” followed by a live question and answer period with playwright Luke Reece and director Lisa Karen Cox. \nWritten by Luke Reece and directed by Lisa Karen Cox\, with a cast featuring Amaka Umeh\, Cameron Grant\, Daren A.
