SUMMARY:Myseum Intersections 2021: Akanzyla (Durational Performance)
DESCRIPTION:A virtual livestream performance on the future of Women’s work where audience members can drop-in anytime to watch and interact. \nAbout this Livestream Performance\nSynopsis \nAkanzyla is an Indian climate refugee living in T’karonto\, located in the Northeast region of Turtle Island\, on the shores of Lake Ontarí’io in 2050. The government has offered climate refugees housing in the run-down condos that flooded the land’s infrastructure in the early 2000s. Akanzyla is a polyworker\, offering spiritual caretaking services for online communities\, participating in algae cultivation and transformation experiments as a creative biologist in the Almanac Cooperative\, all while being the second parent to two children conceived through hybridized surrogacy in a nurture pod and making content to increase the value of her namesake coin. Given the climate circumstances\, she is only able to safely venture outdoors 1-2 times a week\, leaving her physically isolated\, yet weaved through digital realms of care and collectivity. \nIn this 7-hour live durational performance (attend for as little or last long as you’d like) you are invited into her apartment to witness a work day from a possible future where feminine principles such as interspecies communication\, ancestral intelligence\, ecological healing\, care and cooperation reign\, but conflict with the residue of destructive legacy systems including colonialism\, white supremacy and capitalism. \nAudience members will be invited to participate in collective work throughout the day\, sensing into what futures of how we labour are available to us. \nThis work is informed by Memory Work\, a foresight research project on the future of woman’s work led by FromLater and At The Moment (ATM). \n*Please note as this is a durational performance you can tune-in/watch for as long as or as little as you choose. DESCRIPTION:What will become of Toronto’s Chinatown(s)? Reimagining ChinaTOwn is a collection of eleven speculative fiction stories set in 2050 that boldly reimagines the future of Chinatown as a shared and collective vision. \nWritten during the COVID-19 pandemic in the early months of 2020\, each story explores a personal relationship to Chinatown in the context of the rising anti-Asian sentiment and growing uncertainty for Chinatown’s future. As the community authors speculate on the future in 2050\, their stories offer a visionary act of resistance by uncovering new possible futures and bringing to light untold pasts. Chinatown itself is an illumination of the histories of diasporas for those who know how to see. It is both a place and a condition; between generations\, between patterns of immigration\, between identities\, between others\, between countries. By envisioning Chinatown anew\, the stories create a radically more generous and expansive present moment by building a collective and shared vision for the future of Toronto’s Chinatowns. \nWith contributions by Eva Chu\, Helen Ngo\, Amelia Gan\, Emperatriz Ung\, Michael Chong\, Georgia Barrington\, Tiffany Lam\, Razan Samara\, Amy Yan\, Evelne Lam\, and Robert Tin. SUMMARY:Myseum: From Weeds We Grow: Birch Bark Basket Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a Birch Bark Basket making workshop which is part of the STEPS Public Art “From Weeds We Grow” series. \nLed by First Nations artist Lindsey Lickers\, this workshop is a reflective exercise that not only allows participants to not only participate through creation\, but to dive deeper into their current relationship with the land base they reside on and the environment at large. This workshop will also explore how this relationship with the land has been strengthened by the knowledge learned and shared during the workshop. \nRooted in an expanded understanding of the importance of connecting to land\, creation utilizing natural materials combined with personalized symbolism of these learnings\, will be actualized through the medium of basket making. \nThe aim of this workshop is to share one way that Indigenous peoples honour this relationship through craft and provide an opportunity for participants to experience first-hand the interconnectedness in all things\, while also honouring their own experiences\, histories and relationships with the basket serving as the keeper of this new awareness. \nWe welcome those who don’t want to or are unable to participate in the making process\, but want to learn more\, to join. \nFollowing this workshop participants will have created a miniature birch bark basket used in medicine gathering. DESCRIPTION:A digital symposium exploring the past\, present\, and possible futures of how we define and develop chinatowns. \nWhat could the heritage future of chinatown look like? The ChinaTOwn digital symposium\, presented by Prof. Linda Zhang of Ryerson School of Interior Design at FCAD\, will begin the discussion by looking at the history and origins of architectural motifs that we now recognize in chinatowns today. \nFrom the first Chinatown in San Francisco\, to the world’s fairs that fascinated visitors with false portrayals of Chinese culture\, the symposium will explore exactly what defines the “Chinatown-ness” that we know today\, and how we arrived at that definition. \nThe symposium will also introduce some of the realities and challenges faced by Toronto’s existing chinatowns today\, as businesses are forced to move out and new policies affect the livelihood of these communities. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Linda Zhang\, Assistant Professor at Ryerson’s School of Interior Design (RSID) at FCAD\, along with a class of fourth-year RSID students\, this immersive and interactive project seeks to identify Chinatown’s future heritage(s) through the affects produced by interior architecture\, lived experience\, collective storytelling\, atmosphere\, and memory. Through a conceptual digital exhibition\, we seek to uncover untold stories and build a collective\, intersectional vision for the future heritage(s) of Toronto’s Chinatowns. \nEach of the projects featured in ChinaTOwn explores what marginalized communities have known for some time—namely\, that all that is written is not necessarily all that is\, and what is remembered extends far beyond what is recorded. ChinaTOwn tells the forgotten stories\, willful omissions\, and accumulation of silences that exist beyond Toronto’s official heritage definition of its Chinatown neighbourhoods. The project aims to put personal stories and individual memory in conversation with state-sanctioned narratives. \nJoin us for the exhibition launch event to hear from the artist and designers themselves and delve deeper into the histories and ideas behind their projects.

DESCRIPTION:A storytelling event to hear about the history of Care Work in Canada and listen to personal stories of migrant Care Workers. \nIn 2019\, Kwentong Bayan Collective and Caregiver Connections Education and Support Organization (CCESO) premiered their collaborative storytelling project\, Re-imagining Stories of Care Work at Myseum Intersections. The event received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community. \nFor Myseum Intersections 2021\, they will reunite and offer a new collaborative project called Here and There which is a prerecorded audio/visual/storytelling piece that will be live streamed on YouTube. \nJoin us to learn about the experiences of Migrant Care Workers who will share their stories. \nThese stories have been developed with the support of theatre artist\, Karen Ancheta and the Kwentong Bayan Collective have responded with an audio/visual installation. \nAs a nature of their work\, Migrant Workers already know how to socially distance – divide mind\, body\, heart\, and spirit – when they are separated from their loved ones for years to work abroad. Through the art of community storytelling\, we’ll explore the rhythms of this dual life; how love transcends time and space; and what we can all learn from this time of lockdown and revolution.

The second part of the event will be centred around collective participatory action through providing the necessary learnings\, tools and options for folx to advocate alongside Asian and migrant sex workers for the right to safely work in dignity. \nPrior to the event\, feel free to read more about what it means to support migrant sex workers justice here. \n5 YEARS+ OF GRASSROOTS POWER WITH BUTTERFLY EXHIBITION\nIn Addition: 5+ Years of Grassroots Power with Butterfly is a community online exhibition\, happening on Instagram (@butterflycsw) from April 17th to May 1st. The exhibition is grounded upon the stories of members from Butterfly\, an Asian and migrant sex workers support network organization in Toronto and beyond. This exhibit showcases the photographs\, voice and text messages contributed by the Butterfly community\, and social media posts in relation to the history of activism\, advocacy\, and support work done over the past years in response to the barriers\, violence\, discrimination\, and challenges Asian and migrant sex workers face. The content included in this exhibition will build a layered timeline\, countering conventional narratives of agency and labour\, and asks us all to actively listen to the stories that speak beyond their work.

DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion reflecting on the 2008-09 Tamil demonstrations\, how they’ve impacted the community\, and this year’s installation and exhibition. \nJoin us for the Images of Resistance: An Archive of Action official launch event. This event will be a panel discussion reflecting on the 2008-2009 intergenerational demonstrations that mobilized Toronto’s Tamil community; a scale of which Toronto had never seen before. During the launch\, you will hear from speakers who were organizers and active participants of those protests. \nThe event will be the launch event for the Images of Resistance: An Archive of Action online web-based exhibit\, and give attendees an inside look at the physical exhibit\, which is on display at the Fort York Visitors Centre. The exhibit tells the stories of the Tamil Canadian protests in 2009 that brought together tens of thousands of protesters to Downtown Toronto to bring attention to the Genocidal War that was taking place in Sri Lanka.

SUMMARY:Myseum of Toronto Presents "Beyond Just Words: A Land Acknowledgement Workshop"
DESCRIPTION:A participatory workshop that explores our relationship(s) to land acknowledgements and re-evaluates how we can make them more meaningful. \nYou’ve heard them before. From attending an event in the city\, or hearing one online you hear: “Welcome\, thank you for coming”\, a brief land acknowledgement read from their phone is recited for the one hundredth time\, and finally housekeeping notes before the event begins. And while what land acknowledgements represent are beyond important\, they can often feel impersonal and superficial. \nJoin facilitators Leslie McCue and Lindy Kinoshameg for this virtual “hands on” participatory workshop where you will learn: \nThe history of agreements and treaties that were made and broken. \n\nPronunciations of Nations.\nExamining who you are\, and your relationship with the land that sustains you.\nYou will have the opportunity to work independently and in small groups (Zoom breakout rooms) to explore\, research\, and develop a more meaningful connection when you are acknowledging and caring for this land.\n\nThis workshop aims to not only help you look beyond your current relationship with land acknowledgements\, but realize deeper possibilities for them; enhancing your appreciation for and understanding of Indigenous histories and cultures. \nWhile this workshop provides some necessary knowledge and resources\, it is intended to be an entry point into lifelong learning. \nFor more information\, please visit this website: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/beyond-just-words-a-land-acknowledgement-workshop-tickets-141885269661.

DESCRIPTION:Join Myseum of Toronto on June 21 from 2pm-3pm EST\, for an online discussion with Filipino Care Workers and allies to explore their long history fighting for (and winning) human rights in Canada. \nWe will learn about the recent movement that boldly calls for “Full Immigration Status for All”. We will meet artists who support migrant communities to tell their stories. And listen to the personal stories of Migrant Care Workers whose labour is currently keeping communities safe during COVID-19.
