SUMMARY:Myseum of Toronto: 1851: Spirit & Voice
DESCRIPTION:An online theatrical experience revisiting the 1851 North American Convention of Coloured Freemen\, where past and present collide. \nBack by popular demand! Welcome to 1851: Spirit & Voice\, a theatrical and playful revisiting of the 1851 North American Convention of Coloured Freemen. Through this work written by playwright Luke Reece\, step into the world of a fictionalized digital conference where the past and present collide. \nLive from St. Lawrence Hall\, Marie and Anthony host a retrospective look at the gathering of 19th century abolitionists in Toronto\, when their event is crashed by ghosts of conventions past. Together our characters grapple with the way history has been written\, as well as issues that affect Black lives today. Watch leading historical figures Mary Ann Shadd Cary\, Henry and Mary Bibb\, and Frederick Douglass share their unfiltered thoughts on historical storytelling and 21st century anti-Black racism. Choose to join in depth conversations about racism\, microaggressions\, and the use of artistic expression as a means of inspiring change. \nThis event includes a talk written by Dr. Naila Keleta-Mae\, “On Safety\, Glass Ceilings\, and Feminism\,” followed by a live question and answer period with playwright Luke Reece and director Lisa Karen Cox. \nWritten by Luke Reece and directed by Lisa Karen Cox\, with a cast featuring Amaka Umeh\, Cameron Grant\, Daren A. Herbert\, Emerjade Simms\, Kaleb Alexander\, and Sophia Walker. \n1851: Spirit & Voice will be presented on May 18 and June 8 from 7-8pm. \nRegister now to become an 1851: Spirit & Voice Delegate!

SUMMARY:Myseum of Toronto: Black Creek Walks\, Talks & Dances – Workshop & Walking Tour 3
DESCRIPTION:WALKING TOUR\n\nWe Are All Treaty People\n\nThe Indigenous peoples of this area view the treaty relationship as one between nations but also between human beings and all other beings inhabiting the land\, water and air we share. Our Indigenous history walk will link stories about the Huron-Wendat\, Seneca\, and the Mississaugas to places and people along Black Creek. By learning this history of where we live\, we will deepen our understanding of how we should live to protect our home and each other. We will visit a Four Directions garden\, Skennen’kó:wa Gamig house on YorkU campus\, and the area where a Huron-Wendat village of longhouses existed in the 1400s\, surrounded by corn fields. We’ll use the “Moccasin Identifier” to help show the connection to the land of each major Indigenous group linked to Toronto\, and ask each other about the footprint we want to leave. \nMeeting point: South-East corner of Jane and Steeles W.\nTour ends at Driftwood Park.\n2-5pm

SUMMARY:Myseum (Virtual): Resistance. Resilience. Revolution.: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join the exhibiting artists of Resistance. Resilience. Revolution. – Gloria C. Swain\, Lillian Allen\, Mosa NcNeilly\, and Janice Reid – for a roundtable conversation where they share their experiences working and living as artists and active members of the Black community in Toronto. This talk will be moderated by Raven Spiratos \nLivestreamed from Black Artists’ Network in Dialogue (BAND Gallery)\, this conversation highlights contributions of older Black women to benefit a ‘new generation’ of Black community artists\, activists\, allies\, historians and community-at-large. \nResistance. SUMMARY:Myseum of Toronto: Confinement and Contagion: Health and Harm Reduction Inside of Canadian Prisons – Informational Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop\, led by Sena Hussain and Prisoners with HIV/AIDS Support Action Network (PASAN)\, will explore the impacts of unequal access to health care and harm reduction measures that prisoners face across Turtle Island. We will also look at how COVID-19 has stressed the carceral system in unprecedented ways and how this pandemic has manifested in creating great harm to people inside. A discussion of an article in Cell Count\, a health and harm reduction resource for prisoners\, will then take place to look at the experiences and mindset of someone who has been carrying out a life sentence to create further understanding of the prison experience. Participants will discuss ways that people on the outside can be in solidarity with those fighting for their rights on the inside.

SUMMARY:Myseum (Virtual): Derailed: The History of Black Railway Porters in Canada
DESCRIPTION:A conversation exploring the history and lived experiences of Black Railway Porters and their fight for equality on and off the tracks. \n“All aboard!” for Derailed: The History of Black Railway Porters in Canada. \nFrom the late 1800s to the mid 1900s\, Canada’s Black Railway Porters were a group of workers who disrupted the system\, becoming instrumental in leading the fight for fair employment practices and anti-discriminatory laws. \nTheir fight for equality both on and off the track helped shape the multicultural Canada we know today\, and continues to inform contemporary conversations about labour and race. \nJoin us for this educational and eye-opening conversation between author/scholar Cecil Foster (They Call Me George: The Untold Stories of Black Train Porters)\, and Andria Babbington and John Cartwright of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council. \nThis conversation will take us back in time to take a look at the inspiring lives and contributions of these men\, and explore how their legacy can help us imagine greater equality in Canada today and in the future. \nThis conversation in partnership with the Toronto & York Region Labour Council is part of an upcoming and in-depth multimedia exhibition about Canada’s Black Railway Porters presented in collaboration with Cecil Foster.

SUMMARY:Myseum: Toronto Stories Live
DESCRIPTION:An evening of storytelling that explores overlooked\, unseen\, and forgotten stories in Toronto’s history. \nJoin Myseum of Toronto for an evening of storytelling that explores overlooked\, unseen\, and forgotten stories in Toronto’s history. \nThese fascinating stories will be told by notable Torontonians who have their own special connection to these stories. \nThe storytelling portion of this event will be followed by an audience Q&A with the storytellers. \n– – – – – \nStories & Storytellers\nStory: Daphne Odjig \nStoryteller: Bonnie Devine \nDuring World War II\, Daphne Odjig was a young assembly line worker who on the weekends taught herself to draw by studying the paintings at the Art Gallery of Toronto and Eaton’s College Street gallery. Decades later\, though entirely self-taught\, Odjig received two of Canada’s highest civilian honours – the Governor General’s award in Visual Art and the Order of Canada. Artist and OCAD University associate professor emerita Bonnie Devine will delve into the history and work of Daphne Odjig with a special appearance by Elder Dr. Duke Redbird delivering an original poem inspired by Daphne’s work \n– – – – – \nStory: Jean Lumb \nStoryteller: Arlene Chan \nJean Lumb was a community activist and restaurateur in Toronto’s Chinatown. Known as the unofficial spokesperson for the Chinese community\, Jean Lumb played a significant role in shaping Chinese immigration law in Canada and chaired Toronto’s “Save Chinatown” campaign in the late 1960s. Arlene Chan will share her mother’s story\, featuring clips from The Spirit of the Dragon\, the 2003 documentary directed by Gil Gauvreau. \n– – – – – \nStory: The Election That Changed Toronto \nStoryteller: John Lorinc \nThe transition from Leslie Saunders to Nathan Phillips was a watershed moment in Toronto politics\, a moment when Phillips\, the self-professed “mayor of all the people\,” replaced Saunders\, an outspoken Orangeman. Narrated by author and journalist John Lorinc\, this story will set the scene of Toronto’s monumental 1954 mayoral election. \n– – – – – \nStory: Binational Lesbian Conference \nStoryteller: Rebecka Sheffield \nThe First Annual Binational Lesbian Conference was a key moment in the development of a lesbian feminist movement. For three days in May 1979\, women from across Canada and North America gathered to talk about issues of intersectionality\, representation\, sexuality\, and class. Narrated by Rebecka Sheffield this story looks back at the conference and includes short remembrances by conference attendees Robin Tyler and Shelley Robertson.

SUMMARY:Myseum Intersections 2021: Akanzyla (Durational Performance)
DESCRIPTION:A virtual livestream performance on the future of Women’s work where audience members can drop-in anytime to watch and interact. \nAbout this Livestream Performance\nSynopsis \nAkanzyla is an Indian climate refugee living in T’karonto\, located in the Northeast region of Turtle Island\, on the shores of Lake Ontarí’io in 2050. The government has offered climate refugees housing in the run-down condos that flooded the land’s infrastructure in the early 2000s. Akanzyla is a polyworker\, offering spiritual caretaking services for online communities\, participating in algae cultivation and transformation experiments as a creative biologist in the Almanac Cooperative\, all while being the second parent to two children conceived through hybridized surrogacy in a nurture pod and making content to increase the value of her namesake coin. Given the climate circumstances\, she is only able to safely venture outdoors 1-2 times a week\, leaving her physically isolated\, yet weaved through digital realms of care and collectivity. \nIn this 7-hour live durational performance (attend for as little or last long as you’d like) you are invited into her apartment to witness a work day from a possible future where feminine principles such as interspecies communication\, ancestral intelligence\, ecological healing\, care and cooperation reign\, but conflict with the residue of destructive legacy systems including colonialism\, white supremacy and capitalism. \nAudience members will be invited to participate in collective work throughout the day\, sensing into what futures of how we labour are available to us. \nThis work is informed by Memory Work\, a foresight research project on the future of woman’s work led by FromLater and At The Moment (ATM). \n*Please note as this is a durational performance you can tune-in/watch for as long as or as little as you choose. Join during a break or have a window/tab open throughout the day. There is also a participatory option while you watch\, which isn’t required but recommended. \nFor further information and to register please visit: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/myseum-intersections-2021-akanzyla-durational-performance-tickets-150972104629.

SUMMARY:Myseum Intersections Festival | Reimagining ChinaTOwn in 2050: Virtual Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:What will become of Toronto’s Chinatown(s)? Reimagining ChinaTOwn is a collection of eleven speculative fiction stories set in 2050 that boldly reimagines the future of Chinatown as a shared and collective vision. \nWritten during the COVID-19 pandemic in the early months of 2020\, each story explores a personal relationship to Chinatown in the context of the rising anti-Asian sentiment and growing uncertainty for Chinatown’s future. As the community authors speculate on the future in 2050\, their stories offer a visionary act of resistance by uncovering new possible futures and bringing to light untold pasts. Chinatown itself is an illumination of the histories of diasporas for those who know how to see. It is both a place and a condition; between generations\, between patterns of immigration\, between identities\, between others\, between countries. By envisioning Chinatown anew\, the stories create a radically more generous and expansive present moment by building a collective and shared vision for the future of Toronto’s Chinatowns. \nWith contributions by Eva Chu\, Helen Ngo\, Amelia Gan\, Emperatriz Ung\, Michael Chong\, Georgia Barrington\, Tiffany Lam\, Razan Samara\, Amy Yan\, Evelne Lam\, and Robert Tin. Each short story is illustrated and accompanied by a virtual reality (VR) companion. Organized by Linda Zhang.

SUMMARY:Myseum: From Weeds We Grow: Birch Bark Basket Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a Birch Bark Basket making workshop which is part of the STEPS Public Art “From Weeds We Grow” series. \nLed by First Nations artist Lindsey Lickers\, this workshop is a reflective exercise that not only allows participants to not only participate through creation\, but to dive deeper into their current relationship with the land base they reside on and the environment at large. This workshop will also explore how this relationship with the land has been strengthened by the knowledge learned and shared during the workshop. \nRooted in an expanded understanding of the importance of connecting to land\, creation utilizing natural materials combined with personalized symbolism of these learnings\, will be actualized through the medium of basket making. \nThe aim of this workshop is to share one way that Indigenous peoples honour this relationship through craft and provide an opportunity for participants to experience first-hand the interconnectedness in all things\, while also honouring their own experiences\, histories and relationships with the basket serving as the keeper of this new awareness. \nWe welcome those who don’t want to or are unable to participate in the making process\, but want to learn more\, to join. \nFollowing this workshop participants will have created a miniature birch bark basket used in medicine gathering. An online exhibit will present the final work alongside the creative process and learnings. \nFor more information and to register please visit: http://www.myseumoftoronto.com/programming/from-weeds-we-grow-birch-bark-basket-workshop/.

SUMMARY:Myseum Intersections 2021: ChinaTOwn: Future Heritage(s) of Toronto’s Chinatowns
DESCRIPTION:A digital symposium exploring the past\, present\, and possible futures of how we define and develop chinatowns. \nWhat could the heritage future of chinatown look like? The ChinaTOwn digital symposium\, presented by Prof. Linda Zhang of Ryerson School of Interior Design at FCAD\, will begin the discussion by looking at the history and origins of architectural motifs that we now recognize in chinatowns today. \nFrom the first Chinatown in San Francisco\, to the world’s fairs that fascinated visitors with false portrayals of Chinese culture\, the symposium will explore exactly what defines the “Chinatown-ness” that we know today\, and how we arrived at that definition. \nThe symposium will also introduce some of the realities and challenges faced by Toronto’s existing chinatowns today\, as businesses are forced to move out and new policies affect the livelihood of these communities. These findings will be presented as part of our speakers’ bodies of work\, art and activism. \nThroughout the symposium the project will connect back to the exhibit installations to help us respond and develop what a heritage future might look like for chinatowns in Toronto. \nFor more information and to register please visit: http://www.myseumoftoronto.com/programming/myseum-intersections-chinatown-future-heritages-of-torontos-chinatowns/

SUMMARY:Myseum Intersections Festival | ChinaTOwn: Virtual Exhibition Launch
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Linda Zhang\, Assistant Professor at Ryerson’s School of Interior Design (RSID) at FCAD\, along with a class of fourth-year RSID students\, this immersive and interactive project seeks to identify Chinatown’s future heritage(s) through the affects produced by interior architecture\, lived experience\, collective storytelling\, atmosphere\, and memory. Through a conceptual digital exhibition\, we seek to uncover untold stories and build a collective\, intersectional vision for the future heritage(s) of Toronto’s Chinatowns. \nEach of the projects featured in ChinaTOwn explores what marginalized communities have known for some time—namely\, that all that is written is not necessarily all that is\, and what is remembered extends far beyond what is recorded. ChinaTOwn tells the forgotten stories\, willful omissions\, and accumulation of silences that exist beyond Toronto’s official heritage definition of its Chinatown neighbourhoods. The project aims to put personal stories and individual memory in conversation with state-sanctioned narratives. \nJoin us for the exhibition launch event to hear from the artist and designers themselves and delve deeper into the histories and ideas behind their projects.

SUMMARY:Myseum Intersections 2021: Here and There: Storytelling Event
DESCRIPTION:A storytelling event to hear about the history of Care Work in Canada and listen to personal stories of migrant Care Workers. \nIn 2019\, Kwentong Bayan Collective and Caregiver Connections Education and Support Organization (CCESO) premiered their collaborative storytelling project\, Re-imagining Stories of Care Work at Myseum Intersections. The event received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community. \nFor Myseum Intersections 2021\, they will reunite and offer a new collaborative project called Here and There which is a prerecorded audio/visual/storytelling piece that will be live streamed on YouTube. \nJoin us to learn about the experiences of Migrant Care Workers who will share their stories. \nThese stories have been developed with the support of theatre artist\, Karen Ancheta and the Kwentong Bayan Collective have responded with an audio/visual installation. \nAs a nature of their work\, Migrant Workers already know how to socially distance – divide mind\, body\, heart\, and spirit – when they are separated from their loved ones for years to work abroad. Through the art of community storytelling\, we’ll explore the rhythms of this dual life; how love transcends time and space; and what we can all learn from this time of lockdown and revolution.

This event will be a panel discussion reflecting on the 2008-2009 intergenerational demonstrations that mobilized Toronto’s Tamil community; a scale of which Toronto had never seen before. During the launch\, you will hear from speakers who were organizers and active participants of those protests. \nThe event will be the launch event for the Images of Resistance: An Archive of Action online web-based exhibit\, and give attendees an inside look at the physical exhibit\, which is on display at the Fort York Visitors Centre. The exhibit tells the stories of the Tamil Canadian protests in 2009 that brought together tens of thousands of protesters to Downtown Toronto to bring attention to the Genocidal War that was taking place in Sri Lanka.

SUMMARY:Myseum of Toronto Presents "Beyond Just Words: A Land Acknowledgement Workshop"
DESCRIPTION:A participatory workshop that explores our relationship(s) to land acknowledgements and re-evaluates how we can make them more meaningful. \nYou’ve heard them before. From attending an event in the city\, or hearing one online you hear: “Welcome\, thank you for coming”\, a brief land acknowledgement read from their phone is recited for the one hundredth time\, and finally housekeeping notes before the event begins. And while what land acknowledgements represent are beyond important\, they can often feel impersonal and superficial. \nJoin facilitators Leslie McCue and Lindy Kinoshameg for this virtual “hands on” participatory workshop where you will learn: \nThe history of agreements and treaties that were made and broken. \n\nPronunciations of Nations.\nExamining who you are\, and your relationship with the land that sustains you.\nYou will have the opportunity to work independently and in small groups (Zoom breakout rooms) to explore\, research\, and develop a more meaningful connection when you are acknowledging and caring for this land.\n\nThis workshop aims to not only help you look beyond your current relationship with land acknowledgements\, but realize deeper possibilities for them; enhancing your appreciation for and understanding of Indigenous histories and cultures. \nWhile this workshop provides some necessary knowledge and resources\, it is intended to be an entry point into lifelong learning. \nFor more information\, please visit this website: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/beyond-just-words-a-land-acknowledgement-workshop-tickets-141885269661.
