SUMMARY:Guelph Historical Society Evenings with History: "John Galt\, the Local Indigenous\, and the Founding of Guelph"
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Gil Stelter\, Professor Emeritus\, University of Guelph\, Department of History \nThis illustrated talk is an exploration of the largely unknown relationship between John Galt and the Six Nation’s leader\, John Brant\, in the events leading up to Guelph’s founding\, and then the actual construction and building of the new town. Brant was the son of the noted Iroquoian (Haudenosaunee) leader Joseph Brant\, who had led the people of his Confederacy to the so-called Haldimand Tract along the Grand River after the American Revolution. Galt had long been sympathetic to the Six Nations claims that they were allies\, not subjects\, of the British crown. Galt demonstrated that it was possible for colonizers to work together with the local Indigenous communities in the building of new towns like Guelph and Goderich. \nGHS Annual General Meeting will be held on April 4\, 2023\, at 7:00 p.m. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Guelph Historical Society Evenings with History: Darin Wybenga\, Knowledge Keeper\, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation
DESCRIPTION:When Mississaugas of the Credit ancestors arrived in southern Ontario in the late 17th century\, they found themselves stewards of approximately 4 million acres of land at the western end of Lake Ontario. The erosion of their land base\, a declining population\, and the continual encroachment of settlers threatened the very existence of the people\, yet the Mississaugas of the Credit remain on their lands today and are proud of their resilience. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the history of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and treaties relevant to the Guelph area. \nIn recent years\, Mr. Wybenga has worked for the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation as the Traditional Knowledge and Land Use Coordinator for the Mississaugas of the Credit’s Dept. of Consultation and Accommodation. His work in the department primarily consists of educating project proponents about the history of the treaty lands\, territory\, and people of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. \nDoors open at 7:00 p.m. and the lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m.
