SUMMARY:Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior: 150th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Come Celebrate with us! \nCome join us for the day for a celebration of the 150th anniversary since a light was installed on Pt. Porphyry Island in 1873. We will have an acknowledgment\, ceremony\, speakers\, dignitaries\, and refreshments. Tours will be provided. Catch the charter from Silver Islet. \nCelebrating 150 years since the first lighthouse appeared at Point Porphyry Island. The lighthouse was situated at this location to help increased the safety of steamship traffic in 1873 on Lake Superior. Join us on July 1st.\, 2023. The event will feature an unveiling of the original lighthouse model constructed by the Hammarskjold High School woodworking class. The celebration will feature new information signs illustrating the past\, the keeper’s stories and their stories of survival. \nCome and celebrate with us with a tour to the island and experience the unveiling of the lighthouse model\, presentation by dignitaries and some birthday cake not only for the Canada Day but the celebration of 150th years of safe shipping that helped build Canada! Only one ship wrecked on Pt. Porphyry\, find out more by attending. \nEvent Itinerary\n–1200 Noon gather on the point\n–Welcome\n–Acknowledgments\n–Unveiling of the Model Porphyry Lighthouse built by Hammerskjold HS Students\n–12:45 Picnic Lunch\, with celebratory cake and refreshments\n–1:30 Historic Tour at Lighthouse Point\n–1:30 Paint Superior – Parks Canada\n–1:30 Watch “Heartland” – Porphyry CBC 1980\n–3:30 approximate time of return to Silver Islet \nThe charter boat is leaving from Silver Islet at 9am or 11am and will arrive with a short orientation tour to the Pt. Porphyry. At 12noon dignitaries\, guests\, members and friends will be welcomed and an acknowledge our First Nations and the role that the lighthouse played in the Lakehead’s transportation history. This will be followed by a picnic lunch\, light refreshments and cake! Visitors can then take a historical tour\, watch a film on being a light keeper at Porphyry in 1980\, join Parks Canada’s Paint Superior activity\, or just explore the island. SUMMARY:Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior - Lighthouse Carnival
DESCRIPTION:A new event that was added to the lighthouse program in 2020 was the Lighthouse Carnival which took place on August 29\, 2020. This year’s Carnival will be held August 28\, 2021. Admission and transportation can be purchased via the CLLS Reservation System. \nEntertainment will be provided by the Scott Van Teeffelen Band. The film showing in the gallery will feature the Graham Family in the 1980 CBC production about the life of a lightkeeper. \nCorn on the cob\, fish and chips\, salad\, and other items will be part of the food line up with a BBQ available for people doing their own cooking. \nLighthouse tours are available for new visitors to the island. Monarch butterflies will be attending the event prior to leaving for Mexico. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor those visitors requiring transportation\, there are 3 charters available: \n\n\nDeparting Silver Islet at 9:00 a.m. and arriving Porphyry Island at 9:30 a.m. Leaving Porphyry Island at 4:00 p.m. and arriving at Silver Islet at 4:30 p.m. (Sold Out\, but check Reservation System in case there are seats made available because of cancellations) \n\n\nDeparting Silver Islet at 10:15 a.m. and arriving at Porphyry Island at 10:45 a.m. Leaving Porphyry Island at 5:15 p.m. and arriving at Silver Islet at 5:45 p.m. \n\n\nDeparting Silver Islet at 11:30 a.m. and arriving at Porphyry Island at 12:00 p.m. Leaving Porphyry Island at 6:30 p.m. and arriving at Silver Islet at 7:00 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:Join as a members of the Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior for the annual clean up at Porphyry Island Lighthouse. Leave from Silver Islet Dock located at the general store at 9:30am June 1\, 2019 and venture on a 20 minute trip to Porphyry Island 13 km to the east. Arrive for a volunteer work day and leave around suppertime. We are working on several projects from installing docks\, constructing a new sauna\, creating some new staff accommodations and a visitor reception area. At the main lighthouse reserve on the point\, we will be doing spring cleaning\, hanging new curtains in the guest house\, filling up our cistern\, cutting the grass\, and turning the garden over\, and planting\, and finally be moving our outhouse. Leave on the shuttle back to Silver Islet between 4-6pm.

DESCRIPTION:Lighthouse Festival of Music with Bruce Hansen and the Superior Lighthouse Players \nThe Lighthouse Festival of Music is a mix of Celtic\, bluegrass\, country\, classical\, folks and swing mixed with a robust sea songs. \nMoney raised will go to the Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior – Artist-in-Residence program. Annually four artists are supported while living on the island during the summer months and creating works of art. \nMark your calendar for March 6\, 2019 at the Urban Abbey. Tickets $20.
