The clean up brings together friends\, family\, hikers & boaters for a day of preserving and protecting lighthouse history. Volunteers help prepare the light station for summer visitors.

DESCRIPTION:If you missed the Trent Valley Archives fundraising production of the play\, Crossing Over\, or you enjoyed the music in it\, or you’d like to learn more about the history of the Robinson settler emigrant transport John Barry\, you should buy your tickets to Behind the Curtain: Historical and Music Highlights of the Voyage of the John Barry. \nThe combined history and music presentation takes place on Wednesday\, June 11\, at 7:30 PM in the Right to Heal PTBO Hall\, 441 Rubidge Street\, the former S.Andrew’s Church. Enter from the Brock Street Parking lot. \nIt’s a joint fundraiser for Trent Valley Archives and its community partner\, Right to Heal PTBO. \nThe history component of the presentation focuses on factual details of the voyage\, and some of the historical figures on board. It includes a performance of period music. It will be hosted by local historian\, researcher\, writer\, and presenter Don Willcock and multi-instrumentalist folk musician Michael Ketemer\, performing traditional 19th-century Irish music. \nDon is a long-time docent at Hutchison House Museum as well as a Town Ward resident\, president of the Peterborough Historical Society\, and on staff at the Peterborough Museum & Archives. \nMichael Ketemer is a talented and well-known Peterborough-based musician and musical director. He plays tunes from the lyrical to the lively in various folk traditions\, as well as ragtime\, classical\, and everything in between. He is a multi-instrumentalist on fingerstyle guitar\, hammered dulcimer\, tin whistle\, and concertina. Michael is excited to infuse Irish tunes from the last 200 years into the show. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a day filled with tractors and powerful equipment with the 28th Annual Father’s Day Smoke & Steam Show taking place on Sunday\, June 15 at Lang Pioneer Village Museum. From 10 am to 4 pm\, watch as local collectors bring some of the oldest antique tractors and steam engines around to life and compete for over 20 awards. \nLearn about the many ways power was generated in the 19th century. View a variety of historic demonstrations including natural dyeing\, weaving on the Jacquard loom\, rope making\, grinding at the Grist Mill\, wood turning by guest demonstrators from the Peterborough Artisan Centre Wood Turners and Kawarthas Wood Turners Guild\, and more. Hop on board a tractor and wagon ride and tour the historic village in style. Take some time to pause and enjoy live music by Appalachian Celtic performed on the Weaver Shop porch\, and have some fun participating in a variety of old-fashioned games in the schoolyard. DESCRIPTION:The Guelph Black Heritage Society will host a celebration in honour of Juneteenth on Saturday June 28\, 2025 from 1pm to 3pm at the Heritage Hall\, 83 Essex Street\, Guelph.  This event will feature live music by Dr Mike and The Nurses\, kids crafts with Art by Gaia\, refreshments and the premiere of the exhibit “Tattooed Stories: Black Identities\, Resistance and Cultural Expression”. \nJuneteenth is a 160-year-old commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. We observe it on June 19th to memorialize the day in 1865 when\, in Galveston\, Texas\, many enslaved Black folks were informed of the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. This official enforcement actually came late\, as it had been well over two years since the signing of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.  While Juneteenth marks a significant day in Black history and a day of remembrance\, it is also an opportunity to honour and celebrate Black history\, heritage and culture. \n“Of all Emancipation Day observances\, Juneteenth falls closest to the summer solstice\, the longest day of the year\, when the sun\, at its zenith\, defies the darkness in every state\, including those once shadowed by slavery.” — Henry Louis Gates\, Jr \nLantern Ale is back at Royal City Brewing Company! Stop by Royal City Brewing Company\, 199 Victoria Road South\, Guelph and get your Lantern Ale.  Lanterns\, prior to and during the American Civil War\, were used as beacons by ‘safe’ houses along the ‘Underground Railroad’ which was a network of people and paths that helped enslaved individuals escape to freedom and to the Queen’s Bush settlement just north of Guelph. \nThe lantern was not only a sign of a safe haven but a symbol of hard-won freedom. Feel the love of the lantern and raise a glass to freedom with us. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the GBHS. \nFree admission\, suggested donation $10 per person. \nProceeds from this event will go towards the Heritage Hall Heart & Soul Campaign. Financial sustainability is a key driver for Guelph Black Heritage Society (GBHS). It’s our goal to diversify our revenue sources to sustain our building\, continue existing events\, activities and educational programs\, plus create\, develop and support new ones in response to community need and demand.

DESCRIPTION:Shane Chartrand is a celebrated Canadian chef at the forefront of indigenous cuisine in North America.  His culinary and personal journey began in Central Alberta where his family taught him the values of fishing\, hunting and the outdoors. \nHe has received numerous accolades including an honorary degree and the Alumni Award of Excellence from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT)\, an Indigenous Community Award\, and an Indigenous Culinary Arts Award.  As a Red Seal certified chef\, he has honed his craft at fine restaurants and hotels\, including the SC Restaurant\, where he served as Executive Chef.  His most recent venture is Paperbirch by Chartrand located in Edmonton’s Old Strathcona Farmers Market. \nShane has appeared in Top Chef Canada\, Iron Chef Canada\, CHOPPED Canada\, Fridge Wars\, and Wall of Chefs.  He has been featured in the Red Chef Revival documentary\, and Mischif Country on APTN.  As an advocate for indigenous cuisine\, he has shared his expertise at keynote talks and food demonstrations from Toronto\, Northwest Territories\, Boston\, Yukon\, and Vancouver to New York City\, Cairo\, and Sharm El Shiek. \nIn 2019\, his first cookbook tawâw – Progressive Indigenous Cuisine (co-written with Jennifer Cockrall-King) was published to widespread acclaim. \nShane will present a talk exploring indigenous cuisine in Canada inspired by his personal journey to learn about the indigenous communities and their relationships and traditional ways with ingredients and foods. \nOn Zoom.
