DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 28th for our annual AGM\, from our virtual location at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theaters! \nAbout this event\nThe Town of York Historical Society will hold its Annual General Meeting on Thursday\, September 28th online via Zoom. Following the business meeting\, there will be a special talk by Ellen Flowers\, Manager of Marketing and Communications at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theater Centre\, who will give us a peek behind the curtain and speak about the theater centre and its history. \nFREE for TYHS members\, $10 for non-members. Memberships and membership renewals are available HERE. \nThe past\, the present and persistence: The story of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre \nThe Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres have had a long and storied history. From their glory days as a Vaudeville roadhouse to an MGM movie palace to their near demise and multi-million-dollar rebirth. Persistence is what has kept this “double-decker” theatre going since 1913. \nOwned and operated by the Ontario Heritage Trust\, we’ll further investigate into the Elgin and Winter Garden story and recount many interesting facts. For instance\, how many times has the Elgin changed its name and what precious artifact was lost in the theatre’s fire. We’ll also share secrets of The Winter Garden\, like why was bread dough so important to the restoration project and what was found backstage undisturbed for over 60 years. \nKnown for her comprehensive “walk-thru” theatre tours\, Ellen Flowers\, Marketing & Communications Manager will switch it up and present a “talk-thru” slide show. Join us as we travel through the years of this celebrated building. \nHow to attend:\nThis is a virtual event that will take place via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Free Public Lecture – John Potestio – Book Launch – Becoming Canadian: Memories of an Italian Immigrant \nThis will be an in-person and virtual event that is free to view and will be recorded and posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date.   \nJoin us for a lecture by historian John Potestio about his latest book Becoming Canadian: Memories of an Italian Immigrant.  The lecture will be part of a book launch event delay from last fall due to COVID-19.  Copies of Becoming Canadian will be for sale in the Museum’s gift shop during the event.   \nJohn Potestio was born in 1939 in Grimaldi\, one of the most important sending towns of Italian emigration. His family settled in Thunder Bay in 1953\, a community where he has lived for nearly seventy years. He is a retired teacher of both Secondary School and University. Potestio is the author of several books that deal with various aspects of settlement of Italian immigrants in Thunder Bay.  \nThis lecture session is part of a the Society’s long tradition of holding free public lectures. Talks on a wide range of topics are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Thunder Bay Museum from September to April.   \n2021-2022 Thunder Bay Museum lecture series is sponsored by the Lakehead University Department of History.
