DESCRIPTION:Learn about the philatelic history of Toronto with expert Garfield Portch! \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an exciting evening of Toronto’s philatelic history with expert Garfield Portch at the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Foundation! \nGenerously sponsored by the Vincent Graves Greene Foundation\, enjoy an extensive presentation on the postal history and the history of the post office in Toronto. With early and fascinating examples of philatelic material dating back as early as 1803\, the presentation will also include information on the mail that was processed at Toronto’s First Post Office\, now Canada’s oldest purpose-built post office still operating\, and the postal history relating to James Scott Howard\, the city’s first postmaster. \nGuests will also have the opportunity to learn about the amazing Greene Foundation\, their research library\, and their resources. \nThe night will also feature a raffle where guests will have a chance to win one of two original pieces of postal history that went through Toronto’s First Post Office when it was first operating\, generously donated by Garfield Portch. Raffle tickets will be $10 and can be bought on site with cash only. \nProceeds from ticket sales will go to supporting operations at Toronto’s First Post Office. \nSeparate donations can be made to support the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation by heading to their site https://www.greenefoundation.ca/. \nDoors will open at 6:45pm! \nComplimentary coffee\, tea and cookies will be provided. \nPre-registration is required and spots are strictly limited. \nToronto’s First Post Office & the Town of York Historical Society want to sincerely thank Garfield Portch and the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation for their generous support\, their valued partnership\, and their sponsorship of this event. \n\n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker: \nGarfield Portch serves as a longtime member and the Executive Director on the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundations’ Board of Directors. DESCRIPTION:Step aboard for a guided journey through the historic Queen’s Bush\, where Black freedom seekers established vibrant communities after escaping enslavement. \nAlong the route\, we’ll explore the stories of the families who built homes\, churches\, schools\, and cemeteries across what are now Waterloo Region and Wellington County. \nToday\, many of these sites have disappeared from the landscape\, but their history and legacy remain. \nThis tour offers an opportunity to uncover these often-overlooked stories and reflect on the resilience\, determination\, and contributions of early Black settlers in the region. \nDeparts: Heritage Hall\, 83 Essex Street\, Guelph \nTime: 12:00 PM (approximately 3 hours) \nCost: $25 per person (includes a picnic lunch) \nAdvance registration required.
