SUMMARY:Norfolk Historical Society Speaker's Series: How I Found My Birth Family: Doug Grant's Life Long Journey ... Again
DESCRIPTION:In March 2018 Doug Grant shared his journey of discovery of how he found his birth Mother. As a result of locating information about her\, Doug has gained 68 new family members. As far as he knew he had no living birth family until four years ago. Since his talk last March\, Doug has located information about his birth father and his family dynamic. \nPlease join Doug on Thursday\, February 28\, 2019 at Grace United Church\, 18 Chapman St.\, Port Dover at 7:00 p.m. to hear more about his discoveries. \nMembers are free and guests by donation. \nMany people are taking a similar journey of discovery of their own family history and listening to Grant’s story may inspire you to take the next step to exploring your own past. During the ongoing research through his own initiative and that of a team of dedicated researchers; skeletons\, indiscretions and true-life drama began to emerge. His people were just that\, people\, with moments of greatness tempered with foibles and foolishness. Does this sound like it could be your family history? \nHosted by the Norfolk Historical Society as part of our ongoing Gallery Talk Series or Speaker’s Series. \nFor further information contact:\nMichele Grant\nPresident\, Norfolk Historical Society\n1-833-968-7647 ext. 202\nmgrant@norfolkhistoricalsociety.ca\nP.O. SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society March 2019 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: John Maniezzo – “When Swansea Was Dry” \nDid you know that the sale of alcoholic beverages was prohibited in the Province of Ontario between 1916 and 1927\, or that some municipalities\, including Swansea\, were “dry” for even longer periods of time\, under a provision known as “Local Option”? A restaurant partly in Swansea and partly in York Township could serve alcohol in the back half but not the front half. For many years it was thought that the south side of Bloor Street between Jane and Runnymede was legally “dry”\, when in fact it was not. John Maniezzo will talk about these and other quirky stories as he explores the history of alcohol sales in Swansea and its neighbouring municipalities.

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society April 2019 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kelly Mathews – “The Road to Marylake” \nIn 2018\, we enjoyed a most entertaining talk by author Kelly Mathews on the subject of Lady Flora Eaton’s lavish country estate in King Township. We are delighted that Kelly will be returning to talk about the subject of her latest book which deals with “Marylake”\, the neighbouring country estate of Sir Henry Pellatt\, better known as the builder of Casa Loma. (For those wishing to check out these historic properties\, the Eaton estate is now the King Campus of Seneca College\, while the Pellatt Estate is now the site of the Shrine of Our Lady of Grace. The two properties are north of the 15th Sideroad and west of Dufferin Ave). \n  \n

SUMMARY:REEL HISTORY: Mary Ward Shipwreck\, and Pathway to the Village of the Souls
DESCRIPTION:Dive to the Mary Ward shipwreck without getting your feet wet or traverse the edge of the escarpment along the spiritual path to the Village of the Souls.  Mary Ward and Pathway are the next films in the Craigleith Heritage Depot’s film series REEL HISTORY. Both films can be viewed in virtual reality\, providing the viewer a unique experience each time they visit.  On May 4\, 2019 our film premiere will feature these new films in addition to the original REEL HISTORY films. Tickets are $25.00 each and funds raised at this event will be used to develop future local history documentaries. \nJoin us for a full evening of historical storytelling.  The original three films will be shown first to introduce the history behind The Apple Industry\, Indigenous History and the Ski Industry in The Blue Mountains.  These films have been appreciated by audiences worldwide from Europe\, North America and throughout our region. \nMarine Curator\, Historian and Folklorist Ian Bell will present a musical foray into the history of shipping around Georgian Bay\, revealing what it would have been like for ships like the Mary Ward.  Among his many accolades\, Ian was nominated for a CFMA award for his album of traditional songs of the Great Lakes: Forget Me Not When Far Away. \nBe the first to see behind-the-scenes of the making the virtual reality films Mary Ward and Pathway.  Then immerse yourself through the magic of the big screen\, or through your own smart phone device\, as a virtual experience. \nLocal historical organizations and partners will be on hand with exhibits before the show and during intermission to share their insights into our dynamic natural and cultural history. Come early and put yourself back in time with our green screen experience.  Make sure you have a chance to use our virtual reality headsets to experience the new films. \nThe museum worked with local film company Mountain Goat Films for production along with the support of the Blue Mountain Village Foundation.  The museum appreciates the support of this night’s event sponsor\, Royal Lepage Locations North\, for helping us bring the films to our community. \nThe doors open at 6:00 pm and the program starts at 7:00 pm. Complimentary non-alcoholic refreshments and popcorn are available as well as a cash bar.  Tickets are $25.00 and available at the Craigleith Heritage Depot and LE Shore Memorial Library. \nCome out and enjoy a visual journey through time.
