SUMMARY:Canada Black Music Archives Presents: B’Lack Then: Muted Melodies
DESCRIPTION:The Canada Black Music Archives is shining a light on the untold stories of over 20 of Ontario’s Black Canadian artists. B’Lack Then: Muted Melodies opens May 22nd at the Archives of Ontario (AO)\, located at York University. This exhibition will explore the hidden histories of foundational Canadian music figures through a collection of vinyl’s\, instruments\, photographs\, newspaper clippings\, selected film screenings\, and discussions.\n\nB’Lack Then: Muted Melodies will be featured at this year’s Doors Open weekend. As a part of this event\, steelpan musician Pat McNeilly\, otherwise known as Pan Man Pat\, will be performing three 30-minute presentations. The Trinidadian born steelpan teacher was an instrumental figure in its establishment in Toronto schools and has been performing at the Toronto Caribbean Carnival (formerly Caribana) since its 1967 founding. His stylings will take place in between screenings of Different Timbres. The short documentary by filmmakers\, Claire Prieto and Roger McTair\, looks at steel drum production\, education\, performance\, and cultural influence in Ontario in the 1970’s and 1980’s.\n\nDoors Open is a free event that allows attendees to explore the city’s architectural\, historical\, cultural\, and socially significant buildings. The Archives of Ontario will be open from 10:00am to 5:00pm on May 24th

SUMMARY:Doors Open Toronto @ John McKenzie House
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Ontario Historical Society and the historic John McKenzie House during 2025 Doors Open Toronto. Visitors will have the chance to explore the historic house and headquarters of the OHS\, and learn how the historic building was saved by the community\, and still functions as an active community space to this day. \nThe John McKenzie House was built in 1913\, in a style described as Queen Anne Revival\, Arts and Crafts\, and Edwardian. The grand\, red brick house is profiled by a large L-shaped veranda with stylized Doric columns. Significant interior features include the centre hall plan\, a vestibule door and sidelights with beveled and leaded glass\, a large leaded art glass window that lights the landing of the main staircase\, panelled doors\, and original radiators. In 1993\, the Ontario Historical Society (OHS) entered into a partnership with the former City of North York to preserve and restore the John McKenzie House\, which serves as the provincial headquarters of the OHS.

DESCRIPTION:The special Bicentennial Souvenir\, a book produced by Nine Ships 1825\, is an attractive\, informative and welcome addition to our understanding of the Peter Robinson Irish Emigration of 1825. \nThe public is invited to attend the Launch of this Bicentennial Souvenir book on May 30th at 11:00 am at the Peterborough & Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce\, Board Room\, 175 George Street\, North in Peterborough. \nNine Ships 1825 is grateful to generous sponsors\, Gary and Joanne Reamey and Paschal and Sylvia McCloskey\, the Federal Government of Canada and other wonderful financial supporters. The publishing of this book was also made possible by Robert and Julie Young\, Dr. John and Denise Lyne\, Carl and Kathryn Young and Michael Battaglia Enterprises Inc.!  Robert & Julie Young  \nHear from historian Elwood Jones about how this attractive Bicentennial Souvenir has truly been a team effort. Learn how Nine Ships 1825 had support from many local community groups to develop plans to commemorate this remarkable Irish Emigration. Meet the talented graphic designer Aaron Robitaille\, who did a wonderful job of layout and design. \nIn this Souvenir you will learn about the Peter Robinson political experiment\, which recruited 2\,024 people in 307 families to prove that it was worthwhile for the British Government of the day to fully finance an 18-month emigration from a volatile area of Ireland to a fertile area of Upper Canada\, ultimately known as the Peterborough area. \nThe central piece of this Souvenir is an alphabetical listing of all the passengers who crossed on the Nine Ships commissioned by the British Government: the Fortitude\, Resolution\, Albion\, Brunswick\, Star\, Amity\, Regulus\, Elizabeth and John Barry.
