SUMMARY:North York Historical Society presents Sheila White - The Letters: Postmark Prejudice in Black and White
DESCRIPTION:No cost to attend and no registration needed! \nWhen: Wednesday October 16\, 2024 \nTime: 7:00 pm \nWhere: North York Central Library\, 5120 Yonge Street\, Room #1 \nThe North York Historical Society welcomes Sheila White to present her book\, The Letters: Postmark Prejudice in Black and White. \nBased on the true romance story of her East Coast parents’ trailblazing  interracial marriage in Toronto and the torrent of letters written to the author’s white mother\, trying to dissuade her from marrying a Black man\, the novel gives life to these letters\, saved for posterity and exposes the pervasive bigotry of the late 1940s. \nThis program is co-sponsored by the North York Historical Society and the Society and Recreation department of the North York Central Library \nThe North York Historical Society is an active group of community members passionate about preserving and promoting North York history.

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society Meeting "Grenadier Pond"
DESCRIPTION:Please mark your calendars for the next meeting of the Swansea Historical Society\, scheduled for 7:30 pm\, Wednesday evening\, November the 6th\, 2024.  We hope you can join us\, either in-person or on-line. \nOur speaker for November will be Ken Stark\, discussing both the natural and human history surrounding the Grenadier Pond. \nThe presentation will cover the Pond’s geological formation and the evolution of human activity ever since.  Once primarily a source of food\, it now provides visitors an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities\, including many recreational pursuits.  As the jewel of High Park\, Grenadier Pond supports a variety of flora and fauna\, some of which are unique to the region.  As with any body of water\, there is an element of risk to its users.  A summary of the unfortunate accidents and tragedies of the last 100+years will be discussed.  Also to be shared are a few interesting stories from the past involving Grenadier Pond as a central character. \nKen is a long-time Swansea resident who lives close to Grenadier Pond.  He regularly visits the pond\, enjoying its beauty and as a place of respite in the middle of the city.  From childhood memories as a visitor to Toronto in the 1960’s through the present\, Ken has participated in various activities on and around the Pond.  At the October Annual General Meeting\, he was elected Vice-President of the Swansea Historical Society. \nThe November meeting will be conducted in a hybrid format so that participants can attend in-person at the Town Hall (95 Lavinia Avenue) or connect on-line using the Zoom tool.
