The Bill passed first reading on June 7. \nFollowing a Gathering earlier this year where we heard about the Bill from Parks Canada leaders\, a working group has been meeting weekly to share insights and develop recommendations. Join this Gathering of the Heritage Sector on November 1 to hear from them\, and learn how we can mobilize to influence the future of this bill\, and federal leadership for heritage places more broadly.

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society Presents "Sir Frederick Banting: The Man You Thought You Knew"
DESCRIPTION:Grant Maltman\, the Curator of the Banting House National Historic Site of Canada in London\, Ontario\, will be speaking on the subject of Sir Frederick Banting: The Man You Thought You Knew. \nMost of us know of Sir Frederick Banting (1895-1941) as the co-discoverer of insulin\, but there is much more to his story! Frederick Banting once wrote\, “Insulin was but a means to an end”. After receiving Canada’s first Nobel Prize\, insulin did indeed become a means to an end for him. Unfortunately for Banting\, that end was a legacy from which he often desperately attempted to distance himself. \nThe story of Frederick Banting is well known but not necessarily known well. While his name has become synonymous with the discovery of insulin\, there was far more to this distinguished Canadian’s career than the often-simplified events of the insulin period. DESCRIPTION:The Port Maitland\, “On the Grand” Historical Association will be holding its Annual General Meeting on November 10\, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at Dunnville Library\, Disher Room. \nOur guest speaker will be Ian Kerr-Wilson the former Manager of Heritage Resources Management at the City of Hamilton. Ian coordinated the Hamilton and Scourge Historic Site for two decades. On Thursday Nov. 10th he will talk to us about another of his varied interests. Currently he is the president of the Beach Canal Lighthouse Group\, a group of individuals interested in preserving the Burlington Canal lighthouse. Located under the skyway bridges in Hamilton. John Brown also constructed the Imperial Lighthouses on Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. \nIan will present a PowerPoint presentation demonstrating various aspects of his marine interest. Hopefully he will tell us a bit about John Brown. \nFollowing Ian’s talk there will be a short Annual General Meeting and the election of a slate of officers who will serve you for the next two years ending Sept. 30\, 2024.

This year\, you have the option between joining us via Zoom or in-person. \nAbout this event: \nElizabeth Gillian Muir will speak about her newly released book\, An Unrecognized Contribution: Women and their Work in early 19th century Toronto\, highlighting scores of women and the work they undertook during a period of great change for the city. \n“Women in nineteenth-century Toronto were integral to the life of the growing city. They contributed to the city’s commerce and were owners of stores\, factories\, brickworks\, market gardens\, hotels\, and taverns; as musicians\, painters\, and writers\, they were a large part of the city’s cultural life; and as nurses\, doctors\, religious workers\, and activists they strengthened the city’s safety net for those who were most in need. Their stories are told in this wide-ranging collection of biographies\, the result of Muir’s search of early street directories\, the first city histories\, personal diaries\, and other documents.” \nAbout the author: \nElizabeth (Liz) Gillian Muir has taught Canadian history at Waterloo University and the University of Toronto. She has written extensively about women in Upper Canada and in addition to writing non-fiction for adults\, she has also published a series of children’s books. Elizabeth holds degrees from Queen’s University\, the Harvard Business School\, and a Ph.D from McGill University.

It is a spacious room with an HVAC system and an additional HEPA filter. \n\nA Documentary and Commentary by Sean Scally\, filmmaker \nSean Scally’s documentary film\, Playing with Fire\, recounts the story of the horrific explosion of the British Chemical Company’s munitions plant in Trenton in October 1918. This little-known story is replete with terror\, heroism and intrigue but with less devastating consequences than the better-known Halifax Explosion ten months earlier. Sean Scally began making films after a career in the Canadian military and Ontario Hydro. He is a self-taught photographer\, podcaster and cinematographer\, having created a body of award-winning work in photography\, short films and features. He is prominent in the cultural life of theatre\, music and history in the Quinte area. \nTuesday\, 15 November 2022\, Bagnani Hall\, Traill College\, 7:30 p.m. All welcome. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Thunder Bay Museum on Tuesday\, Nov. 15\, 2022 at 7:30 PM to watch some exciting recently digitized historical newsreel film with us. \nThe Thunder Bay Museum\, Friends of the Finnish Labour Temple\, and ShebaFilms presents: \nReel Memories of the Lakehead: News from the Giant \nThe Reel Memories of the Lakehead project was a partnership between the Thunder Bay Museum\, Friends of the Finnish Labour Temple\, and ShebaFilms. News from the Giant is a series of 8 short vignettes from the Thunder Bay (formerly Port Arthur and Fort William) and Northwestern Ontario region. These vignettes replicate the year-end highlight reels\, that news stations and movie theaters of the day used to show\, reviewing major events of the year. The newsreel film was originally donated to the Thunder Bay Museum by Fraser Dougall and spans from approximately 1958-1978. These vignettes represent a small portion of a very large collection of 16mm film that has been cleaned\, spliced\, and digitized for academic and public use. \nFree Museum Admission during the event. DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the South Grey Museum invite you to the Speakers Series 2022\, developed and hosted by Barry Penhale. As someone with an interest in the Museum and its programs\, you know how much we have all missed many activities during the COVID-19 pandemic\, including our series of talks. We decided to welcome our supporters back to a virtual series for 2022\, offered as webinars via Zoom with another eight programs\, occurring as usual on the third Wednesday of each month\, April to November\, at 7:00 pm. \nThe Museum being no longer available as a host site\, and with the continuing threat of COVID\, going virtual was the obvious solution. Moving to a virtual delivery brings with it some additional costs\, so we have made this a subscription series\, but we’ve kept the usual at-the-door cost as a household fee of $10 per session. We are grateful to the Municipality of Grey Highlands for continuing their support for the presenters. \n\nBarbara Dickson is a professionally-trained public speaker\, local historian\, and award-winning author in both fiction and non-fiction. During the Second World War\, over 21\,000 patriotic citizens\, predominately women\, courageously worked with high explosives. Barbara provides an account of women working in high-security\, dangerous conditions making bombs in Toronto during the Second World War. For over a four-year period they filled munitions for the Allied Forces at a top-secret facility located in Scarborough\, Ontario. \nSome 170 buildings comprised the site along with over four kilometres of secretive tunnels\, which remain as mysterious today as they did years ago. What was it like to work in a munitions factory during the Second World War? Barbara’s comprehensive presentation focuses not only on the breadth of the war-time endeavour but also on the amazing women who worked there. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk and panel discussion with award-winning placemaker and thought leader/city builder Jay Pitter. \nDate: November 16\, 2022 at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.)\nLocation: Winter Garden Theatre\, 189 Yonge Street\, Toronto\, Ontario \nWhat is placemaking? Placemaking is an inclusive\, community-based approach to public space design\, activation/programming and policy. \nThe Ontario Heritage Trust is excited to announce that Jay Pitter is the Heritage Matters Live 2022 speaker and will be giving a talk called “The Future of Culture is …” This event will be hosted and moderated by Nahlah Ayed\, host of CBC Ideas. \nPitter’s work is at the cutting edge of understanding and grappling with our complicated histories while ensuring an equitable future. Her incredible experience in placemaking\, as well as her broader work in the culture sector\, will make for a thought-provoking talk that will tackle the future of culture and design through a heritage lens. \nIn “The Future of Culture Is …\,” Pitter asks us to examine how we define heritage\, whose heritage is deemed worthy of protection and how to confront the complexity of colonial heritage symbols. Using examples from her practice\, research and community stories\, Pitter will take audiences on a journey that starts in the past\, before looking at new possibilities for the future. \nJay Pitter has a vast body of experience to draw from\, and some recent examples of her projects include: \n— working with the City of Toronto to develop a Cultural District Program Proposal and a Little Jamaica Master Plan\n— engaging the community regarding a statue to Queen Victoria and local efforts to decolonize public spaces\, for the City of Kitchener\n— leading the project to reimagine the Cheapside Confederate monument in Lexington\, Kentucky\, with site practice and research to address the community impacts of these public commemorations \nAt the end of the talk\, there will be an onstage panel discussion with Pitter and a number of guests who will share examples of the tangible ways that individuals and organizations can meet the positive vision for the future laid out in Pitter’s presentation.

SUMMARY:Heritage Ottawa (Virtual): Welcome to the Tunnel. Now: How'd we Get In\, and How do we Get Out?
DESCRIPTION:The mushrooming fix-up business is the largest component of Canada’s largest industry\, construction. In Ontario\, it pumps tens of billions of dollars annually into our GDP. And one in every eight Ontario buildings was constructed before World War II. \nBut if it is so economically vital\, Marc Denhez asks\, why is it still so hard to target even the best-of-the-best for reuse\, instead of a trip to the dump? How did we get into this tunnel? \nJoin Marc Denhez\, lawyer and adjudicator with over 30 years’ experience in the law of built\, natural and intangible heritage\, who breaks the problem down into three clear headwinds: \n– A biased tax structure (including incentives for demolition and disincentives for repair);\n– Misleading branding of the fix-up / reuse option; and\n– Shortages of funded training for doing good fix-up on a budget. \nMarc also sets out a path that could lead us out of the tunnel. Find out how a level playing field could be restored to the industry in order to not only sustain our building assets\, but capitalize on them.

New residential developments are springing up all across Clarkson\, Lakeview\, Lorne Park and Port Credit. In many cases\, historic homes\, stores and parks are being removed to make room for new homes and condos\, yet many of the newcomers have chosen to live here to be part of the historic charm that Mississauga South still has\, but may lose. \nOur public meeting for November will look at our past and our future. Our slate of presenters for the evening will take stock of what we still have in Mississauga South and look at what the community can do to save what we still have. \nThis meeting\, and all upcoming MSHS meetings are free events.
