SUMMARY:Kitchener Public Library Genealogy Fair
DESCRIPTION:Kitchener Public Library is organizing its seventh annual Genealogy Fair on Saturday\, November 2\, 2019. The event runs from 9:30 am to 4 pm at Central Library. It is open to the public with no admission charge. We are planning a variety of activities\, including free workshops and a vendor marketplace. Our previous Genealogy Fairs were successful beyond our expectations! We hosted 8-12 lectures at each event and saw over 300 people throughout the day at each Fair. We would like to offer your business or non-profit organization an opportunity to participate in our Fair. Reach your target market! \nThis year\, we are pleased to announce that Melanie McLennan\, of Ancestral Tapestry Genealogical Services\, will be our keynote speaker! Melanie will talk about her enthusiasm and success in using genetic genealogy in her Irish family research in her keynote address. \nThere are a two ways to participate:\n1) Marketplace Exhibitor\nSingle information & sales booths will be displayed in the main floor lounge of the Library. Tables (6 feet in length) cost $10 plus HST (total = $11.30) each. Electrical outlets\, one chair per exhibitor\, and Wi-Fi are provided. You are welcome to bring your own equipment for use at the table. Table payment\, by cash or post-dated cheque\, (dated and received by September 20\, 2019\, made payable to Kitchener Public Library)\, must accompany or follow your application. Payment receipts will be mailed when your participation is confirmed in early October. Please note that table deposits are non-refundable after your application for participation has been accepted in early October. To expedite your application\, please email us your organization’s logo (jpeg) when you submit your application. \n2) Workshop Leader\nWorkshops are scheduled throughout the day and will be held in the Central Library’s meeting rooms on the lower level\, which can accommodate from 30 to 200 participants. Forty-five minutes have been allocated for each workshop (35-minute presentation\, followed by Q&A).\nIf you are applying as a workshop leader\, please include:\n– an outline of your presentation and A/V equipment needs\n– a brief speaker bio\n– a high quality jpeg of your logo and headshot \nThere is limited space for this event\, and we anticipate a strong response. \nPlease ensure that your application reaches us\, by email/mail/fax\, before 5pm on Friday September 20\, 2019. We will confirm marketplace and speaker acceptances the first week of October. \nParticipating businesses and organizations will be promoted in a number of ways. Posters with your company name and logo will be created by our in-house Graphic Artist and displayed at five library locations and 16 local community centres. Electronic copies will be distributed to community contacts and genealogy websites and via electronic newsletter to library subscribers. \nComplete event details will be featured on KPL’s web page at www.kpl.org and the Grace Schmidt Room blog\, Historically Speaking\, (http://historicallyspeakingkitchener.wordpress.com). Event teasers will be released via KPL’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/kitchenerlibrary and our Twitter accounts http://twitter.com/KitchLibrary and http://twitter.com/KPL_GSRHistory) throughout August\, September and October. \nWith your help\, Kitchener Public Library’s Genealogy Fair will offer something for everyone – from the person who is just getting started to more experienced researchers. The day will also be a wonderful way to connect with others. As we know\, for many of us\, genealogy isn’t a hobby\, it’s a passion. \nPlease feel free to contact either Karen or Sheila at this dedicated email address\, genealogyfair@kpl.org with any questions or to discuss this opportunity further.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Humourist Drew Hayden Taylor Headlines Friends of South Grey Museum Event
DESCRIPTION:The award-winning author\, humourist\, and playwright\, Drew Hayden Taylor\, will perform on stage at the Kinplex in Flesherton\, Saturday evening\, November 9\, presented by Friends of the South Grey Museum. Friends of the South Grey Museum was incorporated by the Ontario Historical Society in 2013. \nComing off an exhilarating round of engagements that include performing at the Canadian National Exhibition\, Taylor’s hugely anticipated local appearance will mark his first engagement within the Municipality of Grey Highlands. \nWidely regarded as a leading member of the Indigenous cultural renaissance that came out of the 1980s\, the prolific performer from Curve Lake First Nation\, near Peterborough\, has honed his considerable stage skills over three decades. \nIn addition to writing 33 books\, numerous television scripts\, and a made-for-television movie (three Gemini Award nominations) based upon his play In a World Created by a Drunken God — the multi-talented Taylor has done stand-up comedy at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and also served as Artistic Director of Canada’s premiere Native Theatre company\, Native Earth Performing Arts. \nHe has held numerous writer-in-residence positions including posts at several universities and at the Stephen Leacock Festival. \nAs his sizeable following has discovered\, Taylor’s special brand of humour is the laughter-inducing element that feed his well-received writings and stage presentations. \nHis forthcoming Flesherton appearance will introduce us a unique perception of Indigenous people. \nAdvance table bookings are encouraged and enquiries should be directed to the South Grey Museum at (519) 924-2843 or (519) 924-2170.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Kingston Historical Society March 2020 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Crosby: “Kingston Through Her Eyes: Harriet Dobbs Cartwright and Her Adopted Canadian Home.” \nHarriett Dobbs Cartwright emigrated from Dublin\, Ireland to Upper Canada upon her marriage to Anglican minister Robert David Cartwright in 1832. Her voluminous correspondence chronicles her active engagement in the local affairs of her new ‘home’ in the colony of Upper Canada: as a wife\, as a mother\, and as a social activist. Cartwright played an incredibly important role in Kingston’s upper class community. She volunteered in the Female Benevolent Society and Orphans’ and Widows’ Friend Society\, through which she contributed to the establishment of such major Kingston institutions as Kingston General Hospital\, St. George’s Anglican Church\, the Kingston Penitentiary\, and Rockwood Asylum for the Insane. Harriett Dobbs Cartwright’s contributions to the community have had a lasting impact on the city of Kingston as we know it today. \nVictoria Crosby is a third year doctoral student in the Queen’s History Department. Her research interests include nineteenth-century Canadian women\, the British World and gender and sexuality studies. She is currently working on a biography of Harriett Dobbs Cartwright.
