SUMMARY:Historical Society of Ottawa (Virtual): Chief Pinesi and his Pursuit of Justice
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker: Jim Stone\, Author\, “Grand Chief Constant Pinesi: Fighting a Losing Battle” \nGrand Chief Pierre-Louis Constant Pinesi (1768-1834) witnessed great and tragic changes during his lifetime. The traditional land upon which Chief Pinesi’s family gathered\, hunted\, fished\, and trapped is where the Nation’s Capital is situated today — before those ancient and crucial livelihoods collapsed under the unending wave of European settlement and deforestation. \nChief Pinesi\, who fought bravely alongside the British during the War of 1812\, saw his many petitions to the Crown for recognition of his people’s ancestral rights left unanswered. \nJim Stone has conducted extensive research into the life and legacy of Chief Pinesi\, working in consultation with members of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation\, including direct descendants of Chief Pinesi. \nIntroduction by Merv Sarazin\, Band Councillor\, Pikwakanagan First Nation. \nThis speaker series presentation will take place on Zoom. Registration: tinyurl.com/HSO-27-Sep-2023\n \nAll are welcome to attend without charge.

SUMMARY:Campbell House: Relic Linear Park Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to the launch event for Relic Linear Park! \nMark your calendars for September 29 at 5 pm\, when we’ll be celebrating the completion of the first part of a new linear park system for Ward 10. \nJoin us at the park’s new Southern Gateway at Queen and Simcoe\, beside Campbell House Museum (160 Queen St W\, at Osgoode Subway). There will be coffee and cookies home-baked at the museum\, plus special guest speakers! \nThe Relic Linear Park system is a community-led vision that embraces the inclusion of architectural carved stones from Toronto’s past set within a unifying corridor of green within the Grange Neighbourhood. The relic stones were rescued from demolished downtown buildings\, then stored for decades at Scarborough’s Guild Park and Gardens. \nThe Southern Gateway of Relic Linear Park is a project of the Grange Community Association in partnership with the City of Toronto and Campbell House Museum. \nThe Southern Gateway is funded in part by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario [https://feddev-ontario.canada.ca]\, and by the City of Toronto.
