SUMMARY:Riverdale Historical Society (Virtual): The 1852 Agricultural Exhibition and the Agricultural Association of Upper Canada with Ross Fair
DESCRIPTION:“Toronto was all bustle and excitement”: The 1852 Agricultural Exhibition and the Agricultural Association of Upper Canada\nAnother year’s Canadian National Exhibition has come and gone. But when did exhibitions become an annual tradition and who first organized them? To answer these questions\, the talk will centre on the Agricultural Association of Upper Canada (founded 1846) and its 1852 Provincial Agricultural Exhibition\, hosted in Toronto. Susanna Moodie was so impressed by the show that she wrote a chapter about it. But a successful exhibition was just one of the association’s ambitions that year and\, at the event\, the provincial government made a major announcement that has shaped government support of agriculture in Ontario ever since. \nDr. Ross Fair teaches in the Department of History at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). His study of agricultural societies\, Improving Upper Canada: Agricultural Leadership and State Formation\, 1791-1853\, will be published soon. He is currently writing a book on the failed attempts to encourage hemp cultivation in Upper and Lower Canada. \nTuesday\, October 25\, 2022\nAt 6:30 p.m. \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/83409291542\nMeeting ID: 834 0929 1542 \nOne tap mobile\n+1 647 558 0588 Canada\n+1 647 374 4685 Canada

SUMMARY:Oxford Historical Society October 2022 Meeting: Doris Weir – Cold Springs Farm in Thamesford
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Wednesday\, October 26 at 6:30 to hear Doris Weir’s presentation on the Cold Spring’s Farm in Thamesford. The presentation will be held at the Woodstock Museum\, NHS. \nFrom Doris Weir: \n“Mr. Harvey Beaty was a huge employer and contributor to the town of Thamesford and surrounding areas.  He started Cold Springs Farm in 1949 and up to his death in 1994 he created a business with over 100 farms\, processing plants and was starting to build a mini town in Florida. \nWhen I received his memoirs I wanted to ensure everyone knew who he was and what he had done for Thamesford\, Oxford County and many other areas in Ontario\, Michigan and Florida so I digitized the memoirs and created a book for everyone to read and enjoy. \nI will be talking about Mr. Beaty’s memoirs book\, his upbringing\, how he crippled himself (his word) and how he started in to the poultry and feedmill business and more.” \nThis presentation will take place at the Woodstock Museum\, NHS. Doors open at 6:30pm and the meeting will start at 6:45pm. This is a free public meeting\, all are welcome to attend.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society (In-Person and Virtual): "Schooling the System: A History of Black Women Teachers" with Dr. Funke Aladejebi
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce the speakers and dates for the Town of York Historical Society’s “Annual Author Series”! Presentations will begin promptly at 7pm and will be followed by a short question and answer period. This year\, you have the option between joining us via Zoom or in-person. \nAbout this event: \nDr. Funké Aladejebi will speak about her most recently published book\, Schooling the System: A History of Black Women Teachers and her exploration of the intersections between race\, gender and access in Canadian educational institutions. \n“Using oral narratives to tell the story of black access and education in Ontario between the 1940s and the 1980s\, Schooling the System provides textured insight into how issues of race\, gender\, class\, geographic origin\, and training shaped women’s distinct experiences within the profession. By valuing women’s voices and lived experiences\, Dr. Funké Aladejebi illustrates that black women\, as a diverse group\, made vital contributions to the creation and development of anti-racist education in Canada.” \nAbout the Author: \nFunké Aladejebi is a scholar of the twentieth century with a specialization in Black Canadian history. In addition to being the author of her newly published book\, Schooling the System\, she is also the co-editor of Unsettling the Great White North: Black Canadian History. Her work explores the importance of Black Canadian women in sustaining their communities and preserving a distinct Black identity within restrictive gender and racial barriers. Dr. Aladejebi has been involved in a variety of community engagement and social justice initiatives in Toronto and her research interests are in oral history\, the history of education in Canada\, Black feminist thought and transnationalism.

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society Presents "Sir Frederick Banting: The Man You Thought You Knew"
DESCRIPTION:Grant Maltman\, the Curator of the Banting House National Historic Site of Canada in London\, Ontario\, will be speaking on the subject of Sir Frederick Banting: The Man You Thought You Knew. \nMost of us know of Sir Frederick Banting (1895-1941) as the co-discoverer of insulin\, but there is much more to his story! Frederick Banting once wrote\, “Insulin was but a means to an end”. After receiving Canada’s first Nobel Prize\, insulin did indeed become a means to an end for him. Unfortunately for Banting\, that end was a legacy from which he often desperately attempted to distance himself. \nThe story of Frederick Banting is well known but not necessarily known well. While his name has become synonymous with the discovery of insulin\, there was far more to this distinguished Canadian’s career than the often-simplified events of the insulin period. Grant Maltman will highlight the centenary of insulin and introduce other aspects of Banting’s life and career\, including his service in both World Wars\, his use of art as an escape\, and his role as a catalyst for Canada’s military and medical research programmes. \nWe suggest that you tune in to the meeting shortly before 8 pm on November 2\, so that we can get started on time. \nZoom info: \nTime: Nov 2\, 2022 08:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nTo join the Zoom Meeting\, go to:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/86074430910?pwd=S2xDTVVQc0NoaEl3MmZYSU9rdnJqQT09 \nMeeting ID: 860 7443 0910\nPasscode: 172555 \nTo join by telephone\, find your local number at:  https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kcohQYhyAK
