DESCRIPTION:Kensington Market Historical Society\, in collaboration with Toronto Public Library and the Canadian Studies Program at University College\, U of T\, presents: Feisty Women of Kensington Market – Part One \nAn Anarchist Queen and Her Radiant Protégé: Emma Goldman & Marie Tiboldo in Interwar Toronto \nSaturday\, May 2\, 2026\, 2:00 pm (doors open 1:45) \nLillian H. Smith Library\, 239 College Street at Huron \nThis talk draws on our ongoing research into Emma Goldman’s (1869-1940) interwar Toronto exile as a case study for investigating how she has been remembered inter-generationally in the city’s official and popular memory. A wide range of people have invoked Goldman in various ways – from the anarchist comrades who long outlived her to second-wave feminists\, cultural producers\, and punk music youth associated with Kensington Market’s anarchist space\, Who’s Emma? (1996-2001). But Goldman’s fame has often obscured the lives of her lesser-known comrades\, especially the women. \nWe focus on Goldman’s encounter with Marie Tiboldo (1904-2008)\, a long-lived Italian Canadian anarchist garment worker largely unknown even to Goldman Specialists\, and ask about her role in the work of creating a memory of Goldman for subsequent generations to inherit. \nFRANCA IACOVETTA is Professor Emerita\, University of Toronto\, and co-editor of Studies in Gender and History at University of Toronto Press. An historian of Canadian and transnational women’s migration\, labour\, and radical history\, she has published a dozen books. \nCYNTHIA WRIGHT is Associate Professor in the School of Gender\, Sexuality\, and Women’s Studies at York University. Trained as an historian\, her interdisciplinary research interests and publications have been shaped by Toronto’s many transnational radical movements and social struggles.

DESCRIPTION:Join Toronto’s First Post Office\, in partnership with 183 Gallery Amazing Moss Park\, for a new walking tour that will explore the history and architecture of Queen Street East in the Old Town neighbourhood. Meeting at Toronto’s First Post Office\, participants will be shown how the street has changed through carefully curated stops that will bring to light the various businesses and historical events that have shaped the Old Town area. The tour will end at 183 Gallery Amazing Moss Park where participants can enjoy the 2026 Contact Photography Festival. All proceeds from tickets sales will be going to support Toronto’s First Post Office. Pre-registration is required and two time slots are available.

DESCRIPTION:Ingredients for Queer Food and the Makings of a Feminist Restaurant\nAlex Ketchum\, McGill University \nCoinciding with the 50th anniversary of the trailblazing restaurant Mother Courage of New York City\, Alex Ketchum’s book Ingredients for Revolution: A History of American Feminist Restaurants\, Cafes\, and Coffeehouses was the first history of the more than 230 feminist and lesbian-feminist restaurants\, cafés\, and coffeehouses that existed from 1972 to the present. \nIn celebration of Pride Month\, the Culinary Historians of Canada has invited Alex Ketchum to discuss how these Canadian and American eateries were and continue to be key sites of cultural and political significance. These institutions served an essential role for multiple social justice movements including women’s liberation\, LGBTQ equality\, and food justice\, as well as providing a training ground for women workers and entrepreneurs. \nThursday\, June 18\, 2026\n7:30-9:00 pm EST\n(virtual event on Zoom) \nTickets on sale through Eventbrite\n$15.00 – $23.50 plus service fee \nAlex Ketchum (she/her) is an Associate Professor at McGill University’s Institute for Gender\, Sexuality\, and Feminist Studies (IGSF). She is an elected member of the Royal Society of Canada: College of New Scholars. Dr. Ketchum is the Director of the Just Feminist Tech and Scholarship Lab. She is the author of several books including  Engage in Public Scholarship!: A Guidebook on Feminist and Accessible Communication\, Ingredients for Revolution: A History of American Feminist Restaurants\, Cafes\, and Coffeehouses\, How to Organize Inclusive Events and Conferences\, and the forthcoming Digital Queers\, and High Tech Gays: A History of LGBTQ+ Cyber Activism. She is also co-editor of the anthology: Queers at the Table: An Illustrated Guide to Queer Food with Recipes.
