DESCRIPTION:Friends of the South Grey Museum was incorporated by affiliation with the Ontario Historical Society in 2013. \n\nMarch is Agnes Macphail month in Grey Highlands – our time to annually pay homage to our Lady from Grey and recognize her significant place in Canadian history. This year\, the Friends of the South Grey Museum\, in partnership with Annesley Markdale\, are resuming their annual Agnes event. We invite you to join us in celebrating the birthday (March 24\, 1890) of Agnes Campbell Macphail (1890-1954) on Sunday afternoon\, March 26th\, when we will also pay tribute to other notable women of Grey Highlands. We are also pleased to be presenting a special showing of the documentary\, No Bed of Roses and delighted to have Terry Mokriy return as our MC. Light refreshments will be included. SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum Free Public Lecture (In Person and Virtual): Nancy Angus - Places and Faces: The Stories behind the Stories of Place During a Pandemic and Today
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society for a lecture from Nancy Angus\, founder of Age BIG and co-coordinator of the Places and Faces project. This will be an in-person event that is free to view. The lecture will be broadcast live via ZOOM for those who cannot attend in person and recorded and posted to the Museum’s YouTube at a later date. \nClick here to view the webinar \nDESCRIPTION: \nJoin Nancy Angus\, founder of Age BIG and co-coordinator of the PLACES & FACES project as we share its stories. Learn more about the concept of placemaking and hear how our storytellers\, all 65 years or better\, captured their stories digitally (in videos composed of photos and voice-overs)\, as audio recordings and as written accounts. \nPLACES & FACES asked storytellers to recognize a place or places that fostered a sense of connection and belonging to their community\, outside of their home. With senior centres and other facilities closed during the pandemic\, we heard many stories about how older adults engaged in placemaking to overcome barriers to social connection. This project demonstrated how resilient and creative people can be in making those connections. \nPlacemaking is often concerned with planning\, designing\, and managing public spaces in ways “that promote people’s health\, happiness\, and well-being.” Emerging research is now focusing on placemaking as a way that people “transform physical spaces into socially relevant and meaningful places.” PLACES & FACES has gathered some of the stories that highlight how older adults in Thunder Bay are actively creating and negotiating their sense of place as they age. \nJoin Nancy and our storytellers as we celebrate their stories and learn from their experiences. Through stories such as these\, we hope to inspire others\, young and old alike\, to find or create their own places. In doing so\, they can help others who are physically isolated or feeling lonely to find connections that matter as well. \nFree Museum Admission during the event. Refreshments will be available.

DESCRIPTION:Our March programme will be in-person\, presented in collaboration with our longtime co-sponsor\, Northern District Library. \nAuthor and historian Elizabeth Gillan Muir will present an illustrated talk on the influential role women had in the life of the growing city of Toronto during the nineteenth century. Based on the extensive research Dr. Muir did for her recently published book An Unrecognized Contribution: Women and Their Work in 19th-Century Toronto. \nDoors open 6:30 p.m. \nDr. Muir will be selling copies of her book before her presentation. Cost: $20 cash or cheque without tax. (Retail price is $24.99.) \nPlease note earlier start time!
