DESCRIPTION:The wonderful singers and musicians of the Shoreline Chorus are back at Annesley\, Markdale with a concert version of The Pirates of Penzance\, a tale of Victorian piracy and love\, both delightful and complicated from the repertoire of Gilbert & Sullivan. \n​Shoreline is a 50 member soprano-alto-tenor-bass (SATB) Owen Sound based community choir under the direction of Ann-Marie MacDairmid. SUMMARY:2026 Toronto History Lecture: A Grocery Store\, a Library\, and the Struggle for Space: Black Community-Building in Toronto\, 1920s–1960
DESCRIPTION:The 15th annual Toronto History Lecture will be held online via Zoom on Tuesday\, August 4\, at 7:30 pm EDT. We hope you will join us! \nThe event is free to attend\, but you must register. (It will be recorded\, so if your schedule or time zone doesn’t accommodate 7:30\, you can time-shift.) \nThis year’s Toronto History Lecture tells the story of the Home Service Association\, a Black community organization in Toronto whose roots trace back to 1918\, emerging from wartime efforts to support Black servicemen. The organization relocated multiple times across the city after its early building was condemned\, continually adapting its programs to meet community needs. By the mid-twentieth century\, it operated from Bathurst Street as a vibrant community hub\, offering cultural programming\, a cooperative grocery store\, and a library. \nThis little-known history offers a compelling\, human-scale account of how communities in Toronto built spaces of belonging\, support\, and collective life. \nOur 2026 speaker\, the dynamic Dr. Melanie Knight\, is Professor of Sociology and Black Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her research examines Black community organizing\, social movements\, and histories of collective life in Canada\, with a focus on archives and under-documented histories. \nThe Toronto History Lecture is free to attend but please register in advance for your Zoom link.

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome. The admission fee is $6.09/person (special group rate). Spaces are limited so early registration is strongly recommended. \nPlease email your confirmation: museumclub@historicalsocietyottawa.ca \nAttendees are responsible for their own transportation. \nAccessibility \nThe museum pathway that leads to the cemetery includes gravel\, grassy\, and uneven terrain and is not considered accessible. While the City of Ottawa is constantly working to improve access\, please note that not all parts of every facility are necessarily ‘accessible for all’ as facilities were built to meet accessibility standards of their time. This includes the second floor of the Main House which is only accessible by staircase. \nParking \nFree parking is available on-site at the Billings Estate National Historic Site\, located at 2100 Cabot Street in Ottawa. A large\, dedicated parking lot is accessible at the end of Cabot Street\, off Pleasant Park Road\, serving visitors to the museum\, historic house\, and grounds. \nPublic Transit \nTo reach the Billings Estate National Historic Site (2100 Cabot Street) by OC Transpo\, take any rapid bus to Billings Bridge Station. From there\, it is a short walk\, (10 min / 1km)\, or a quick transfer to local bus routes that pass near the museum\, such as Route 44. Use the OC Transpo Travel Planner to find specific routes from your location.

DESCRIPTION:Scarcity remains in the memory of those who lived during the World War II era. Sugar was a staple that was rationed by government proclamation from 1942 to 1947. It was a key ingredient in preserves\, baked items\, and favourite family dishes. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the philatelic history of Toronto with expert Garfield Portch! \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an exciting evening of Toronto’s philatelic history with expert Garfield Portch at the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Foundation! \nGenerously sponsored by the Vincent Graves Greene Foundation\, enjoy an extensive presentation on the postal history and the history of the post office in Toronto.
