SUMMARY:OGS Toronto Branch Toronto History Lecture (Virtual): Eric Sehr\, "The Tragic Fate of Huron Elliott: A Forgotten Indigenous Worker on Toronto's Water Tunnel Project"
DESCRIPTION:Toronto Branch is pleased to present this year’s Toronto History Lecture: The Tragic Fate of Huron Elliott: A Forgotten Indigenous Worker on Toronto’s Water Tunnel Project. Our speaker is researcher\, writer and urban planner Eric Sehr. \nOne of the most significant projects undertaken in Toronto during the early 1900s was the construction of the Water Supply Tunnel in Toronto’s harbour. Huron Elliott\, a miner from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation\, arrived in Toronto in 1907 to work on this project. Tragically\, he and three other workers lost their lives just days later. \nThe Lecture will be held online via Zoom on Tuesday\, August 8th\, at 7:30 pm EDT. It is free to attend\, but you must register. The talk will be recorded for later viewing. \nFor more information about the Toronto History Lecture and to register: https://torontofamilyhistory.org/event/toronto-history-lecture-2023/.

SUMMARY:Wesleyville Heritage Village Keynote Barbeque
DESCRIPTION:Good news from Wesleyville Heritage Village! \nWe’re now working with the United Church of Canada on a lease with the Friends of Wesleyville Village for community use of the Church for at least another 50 years.\nWhen approved this new lease would secure community investment in the restoration and upgrade of the Church building required after the 2021 fire. \nThe recovery work is estimated at between $400\,000 and $500\,000. The community\, including the Municipality of Port Hope\, has already contributed over $150\,000 towards this project. We’re planning to start repairing the stained glass windows and the entrance doors this fall and have applied for an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant to meet accessibility needs\, building and fire code requirements. \nFund-raising must continue for this and other Wesleyville Village conservation projects. To donate go to www.wesleyvillevillage.com or email friendsofwesleyvillevillage@gmail.com. \nPlease join us for the Keynote Barbeque Saturday August 12th 5:30 – 8:00 pm. Great food\, music and silent auction. Tickets $35 each at Holton Flowers 62 Walton Street\, Port Hope. Email orders: friendsofwesleyvillevillage@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:UEL Association of Canada - Governor Simcoe Branch (Virtual): September 2023 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Prelude to Brandywine: Loyalists\, Hessians\, the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge\, and a Fateful Council of War” — Presentation by Joshua Loper \nOn Zoom (virtual-only): Register here. \nThe Battle of Brandywine\, fought just outside of Philadelphia on September 11\, 1777\, resulted in an overarching British victory and the conquest of the rebel seat of government. \nMore troops fought at Brandywine than at any other battle of the American Revolution. It was also the second longest single-day battle of the war\, after the Battle of Monmouth\, with continuous fighting for 11 hours. \nHowever\, this presentation is not about Brandywine\, but some of the events leading up to it. \nJoshua made a great presentation in May\, mixing historical facts\, debunking myths\, adding some humour. This presentation will undoubtedly be in the same vein. \nOur branch’s namesake\, John Graves Simcoe\, participated in this battle. \nJoshua Peter Loper\, DPS\, W1812S\, SF&IW\, SAR\, DMWV\, SUV\, SSAWV\, SFWW\, SSWW\, BS\, CJ(cert)\, UE\, MBP(e)\, MBP(s)\, CCHS\, ALK\, is a historian\, published author\, and educator of many years. He is currently the Director of the Delaware Military Heritage and Education Foundation/the Delaware Military Museum. He is also the Executive Director of the George Washington Witness Tree of Delaware Museum. He has a lifelong love of history\, especially the American Revolution.

SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society Annual Fall Author Series 2023: David Raymont
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 7th for the first evening presentation of our Annual Fall Author’s Series! \nDavid Raymont will present on his editorial review of William Harrison’s Memoirs that focus on the true story of the Richmond Hill Murders of 1843; the historic event that would later inspire Margaret Atwood’s novel\, “Alias Grace.” By focusing on contemporary accounts and using a variety of primary sources\, Raymont uncovers an intriguing history full of twists and turns while presenting the social aspects of public opinion towards single parents and domestic work in 1840s Ontario. \nIn 2017\, the Netflix series Alias Grace\, written and directed by Sarah Polley\, inspired David Raymont to reread\, edit\, and publish William Harrison’s memories of the Richmond Hill murders of 1843. As Harrison’s memories challenged Grace Mark’s murder confession\, David researched contemporary newspaper accounts\, the bench notes of the judge presiding over the murder trial and books recounting the murder. What he uncovered presents a far more tragic chain of events that shifts the spotlight to the story of the victims rather than that of the murderers. \nAbout the Author:\nDavid Raymont is a past director of Heritage Toronto\, a former president of the York Pioneer & Historical Society\, and a retired Ontario public servant.
