DESCRIPTION:The Oakville Historical Society is pleased to announce the speaker for our June 17th “Speaker Night”\, presented by Henry Jelinek. Mr. Jelinek will tell the story of the cork business\nof his ancestors\, which began in 1855 in Austro-Hungary\, recounting the many hardships they underwent\, dealing with war\, the Great Depression\, Nazi occupation and communist nationalization.\nHaving lost everything\, the family fled to Oakville in 1948\, and rebuilt a thriving business that continues today\, and spans across five generations – being one of Oakville’s oldest enterprises. \nThe talk also explores cork itself – its origins\, unique properties and value as a sustainable natural material – and how it has grown to be used across various industries. Henry Jelinek has spent a lifetime working with and studying cork\, and is a leading authority on cork and its many uses. A graduate of Marietta College in Ohio\, he went on to earn his master’s degree from The New School for Social Research in New York City. He has spent months in various cork forests throughout the Mediterranean region\, participating in numerous cork harvests. Jelinek is a strong advocate of using natural materials in responsible ways while ensuring their sustainability. He has spent over fifty years in the cork business. He has written numerous articles and several books. He and his wife Cathy reside in Oakville. DESCRIPTION:Ingredients for Queer Food and the Makings of a Feminist Restaurant\nAlex Ketchum\, McGill University \nCoinciding with the 50th anniversary of the trailblazing restaurant Mother Courage of New York City\, Alex Ketchum’s book Ingredients for Revolution: A History of American Feminist Restaurants\, Cafes\, and Coffeehouses was the first history of the more than 230 feminist and lesbian-feminist restaurants\, cafés\, and coffeehouses that existed from 1972 to the present. \nIn celebration of Pride Month\, the Culinary Historians of Canada has invited Alex Ketchum to discuss how these Canadian and American eateries were and continue to be key sites of cultural and political significance. These institutions served an essential role for multiple social justice movements including women’s liberation\, LGBTQ equality\, and food justice\, as well as providing a training ground for women workers and entrepreneurs. \nThursday\, June 18\, 2026\n7:30-9:00 pm EST\n(virtual event on Zoom) \nTickets on sale through Eventbrite\n$15.00 – $23.50 plus service fee \nAlex Ketchum (she/her) is an Associate Professor at McGill University’s Institute for Gender\, Sexuality\, and Feminist Studies (IGSF). She is an elected member of the Royal Society of Canada: College of New Scholars. Dr. Ketchum is the Director of the Just Feminist Tech and Scholarship Lab. This includes the second floor of the Main House which is only accessible by staircase. \nParking \nFree parking is available on-site at the Billings Estate National Historic Site\, located at 2100 Cabot Street in Ottawa. DESCRIPTION:CHC is hosting a visit to 2 museums in Burlington\, Ontario on the same day.  Join us in Burlington on July 11. \nIn the morning\, there will be a guided tour and hearth baking workshop at Ireland House.  This was the home of Joseph Ireland\, one of the earliest settlers to the area.  Several generations of the Ireland family lived on the property until 1985.  It is currently operated as a museum by the city of Burlington and showcases 3 distinct periods: 1850’s\, 1890’s\, 1920’s. \nAfter lunch at Ireland House (bring a lunch)\, we will move to Joseph Brant Museum for a presentation and time to explore eat make share: a taste of immigration.  This travelling exhibition created by the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax makes a stop in Burlington from April 18 to September 5. \nIreland House\n2168 Guelph Line\, Burlington\, ON L7P 5A8 \nJoseph Brant Museum\n1240 North Shore Boulevard East\, Burlington\, ON L7S 1C5 \nTickets on sale through Eventbrite until July 6\n$35.00 – $45.00 plus service fee \nRegistration fee includes admission to both museums\, guided tours\, and the baking workshop.  Participants must be at least 15 years of age. Leisurely\nperuse the cars\, trucks\, and motorcycles of every make and model displayed \nthroughout the historic village\, and be sure to cast your vote for your favourite.\nTour the village by horse-drawn wagon and view a variety of historic demonstrations\, including log hand hewing\, Grist\nMill demonstrations\, a tongue-in-cheek suffrage meeting at the Town Hall\, and more. Take part in some schoolyard\ngames and races\, and make a craft to take home with you at the Ayotte Cabin. Be sure to check out the display\nbrought by the Peterborough Model Railroaders. Stop to relax and enjoy music from the 50s to 80s with DJ Del and\nJenny Jams in the PCAHB courtyard.\nRefreshments and sweet treats will be available for purchase throughout the day at the Keene Hotel\, or stop by Ben’s\nKettle Corn\, which will be popping up fresh kettle corn. The Keene Lions Club food truck will be on-site selling BBQ\ngoods (cash only). Fresh Empire Cheese curd\, bread\, and pickles on a stick will be available for purchase in the\nCheese Factory\, or enjoy pancakes on a stick sold by Lea’s Creations\nFor those wishing to bring their car\, truck\, or motorcycle to display\, participant registration runs from 8 am to 12 noon\,\nwith a $10 registration fee that includes admission into the village. The first 200 vehicles to enter will receive a\ncomplimentary dash plaque as a souvenir of their participation.
