DESCRIPTION:Who were the wives\, mothers\, and women during the War of 1812? Why has history largely forgotten these integral players in Canadian history and is this anyone’s fault? We can formulate our answers to these questions by examining and sharing stories of womanhood during the War. We will discuss famous women like Laura Secord and try to piece together the plight of the under-recorded women\, the wives and families of the British Army and Canadian Militia. What are the challenges in finding and presenting this history? Why is it so important to do so? \nOur presenter is Emma Stack: “I graduated with an Honours Degree in History and Philosophy. I went on to obtain and Bachelor of Education Degree and an Early Childhood Education Diploma. I taught history at the high school level. I have written and published four novels\, set during the War of 1812. I am an 1812 reenactor and the Historical Interpreter for the Royal Scots Regiment. MacDonald House at 121 Centre Street\, Thornhill\,  for the official unveiling of the Moments of Algoma Group of Seven in Thornhill easel and Group of Seven Commemorative Plaques. \nThis special event is co-hosted by the Thornhill Historical Society\, City of Vaughan and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program (SNAP) and Moments of Algoma. \nFollowing the ceremony\, guests are welcome to participate in guided walking tours through the village of Thornhill\, visiting the former homes of five Group of Seven members. The day will also feature a en Plein Air art show\, family art event and community booths. \nThe new easel installation commemorates the Group of Seven’s artistic and cultural legacy and their connection to Thornhill. As part of the broader Moments of Algoma Group of Seven Touring Route\, this interpretive panel places Thornhill on the map as a significant stop in the story of Canada’s artistic identity. \nThe Group of Seven Commemorative Plaques\, installed in honour of the Thornhill Historical Society’s 50th anniversary in 2024\, mark the homes once occupied by the five members of the Group of Seven who called Thornhill home. \nThis project is the result of vision\, dedication\, and collaboration—led by the Thornhill Historical Society and supported by the City of Vaughan\, TRCA’s Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program (SNAP)\, Moments of Algoma\, and our generous donor and benefactor\, Lorna Rogers. DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Joan O’Malley \nWhen Prime Minister Lester Pearson called up Joan’s father at the last-minute\, urgently needing samples (by the next morning!) of the final three choices for the new Canadian flag\, it was 20-year old Joan who came to her father’s rescue\, sewing Canada’s first maple leaf flag. \nAdmission is free. All are welcome to attend. \nNote that this presentation will coincide with the annual Canada Army Run\, which will entail some street closures east of the Library. It is recommended that attendees consider arriving by public transit or\, if driving\, approach and locate parking west of the Library.

DESCRIPTION:Please Join Us for SPEAKER NIGHT – Thursday\, September 25th\, 2025 – 7:00 pm\, at the Coach House: Stonehooking 1830’s to 1920 – An era that gave way to Concrete and Prohibition with Mr. Ross Gordon Noel. \nThis evening will provide a historical view of Stonehooking – the trade\, and Stonehookers\, the ships\, the captains and their crews. \nThe significance of stonehooking to towns on the north shore of Lake Ontario\, and what on earth does it have to do with craft beer? \nFollowing his passion for beer (and large projects)\, Ross embraced the craft beer movement and founded Stonehooker Brewing Company in February 2016. The brewery was built on Lakeshore\, just east of Port Credit\, and opened in 2019 with 6 beers on tap\, a taproom\, and a brand that pays tribute to the historical significance of a forgotten industry. Now in its 7th year of operation\, Stonehooker is the proud brewery of award-winning beer with 54 recipes and many local favourites\, all traditionally brewed with all-natural ingredients. \nBorn and raised in Toronto\, Ross graduated from the Ryerson Business program in 1984. His career in IT spanned 3 decades and multiple industries including manufacturing\, telecom\, finance and public utilities. He has held management roles in several Canadian banks and he’s also a certified PMP (Project Management Professional). SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society - Governor Simcoe Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:We hope you can join us for this year’s version of the Annual Governor Simcoe Walking Tour\, to be offered in two parts on Saturday\, September 27.  As in past years\, this FREE guided walking tour will retrace a portion of Governor Simcoe’s 1793 expedition up the Toronto Carrying Place portage route. Part 1 of the tour will start at 9:30 am at the Rousseau plaque (8 South Kingsway\, beside the Petro Canada station)\, heading north\, mainly along Riverside Drive\, and finishing near Bloor Street about noon.  After a break for lunch on Bloor Street\, Part 2 will start at 1:00 pm at the Alex Ling Fountain (north-west corner of Bloor and Jane Streets)\, and then head farther north\, mainly following residential streets east of the Humber River. Participants are free to join or leave the walk at any point along the route. \nAll are welcome.

This free event offers a night of discussion and powerful pieces from renowned poets in celebration of the city’s Poet Laureate\, Lillian Allen. \nOften praised as the “Godmother of Dub Poetry” Lillian Allen was one of several talented Toronto poets who helped carve out a home for the genre in the city\, through live performances\, festivals\, publications\, and education. Throughout its development she has remained a constant force in its message of resistance and upliftment. Opening the evening is panel discussion Perspectives on Dub Poetry’s History in Toronto\, hosted by former CIUT FM radio personality and educator\, Thando Hyman. The panel features academics\, spoken-word artists\, and culture critics\, who will offer their unique insights on the development\, influence\, and impact of dub poetry and spoken word in Toronto. Panelists include Professor Michael Bucknor from the University of Alberta\, Toronto music historian Klive Walker\, Canadian spoken word artist and Order of Ontario recipient Dwayne Morgan\, and award-winning author and Professor Natalee Caple of Brock University. \nFollowing the panel\, attendees will be treated to performances by an esteemed lineup of poets\, including Dwayne Morgan\, Andrea Thompson\, Desiree McKenzie\, Britta “Bee” Badour\, and Mathew-Ray “Testament” Jones\, the Poet Laureate for the Province of Ontario. DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker: Michel Prévost\, renowned regional historian\, heritage advocate\, Outaouais Historical Society President\, and recipient of several scholarships \nThe Ottawa Valley has the privilege of being associated with a legendary figure whose fame goes far beyond the region’s borders. This folklore giant spent half his life here\, attracted by the forestry industry. He became a lumberjack\, log driver\, site foreman\, and master raftsman. This presentation will demystify him by exploring the different facets of this larger-than-life character. Come discover his exploits\, including the famous battle on the Union (Chaudières) Bridge where he alone beat more than 150 Shiners\, strong-arm Irishmen. Finally\, we will demonstrate that there are still many traces of him in our folklore\, toponymy\, and monuments. \nAdmission is free. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a fun-filled celebration of apples and the harvest season with Applefest\nat Lang Pioneer Village Museum! The Museum’s sweetest and most popular event returns\nto the historic village on Sunday\, October 5\, from 10 am to 4 pm.\nTour the village by horse-drawn wagon courtesy of Highview Farm\, and enjoy the sights\,\ntastes\, and aromas of autumn and apples. Throughout the village\, view a wide variety of\nhistoric demonstrations including cider pressing at the Cider Mill\, threshing\, mattress repairing and stuffing\, natural dyeing\,\nchair caning\, corn cordage making\, broom making\, grinding at the Grist Mill\, wood turning by the Peterborough Artisan\nCentre Wood Turners and Kawartha Wood Turners Guild\, rug hooking by the Northumberland Rug Hookers Guild\, spinning\nby Shepherd Hill Farms\, sheep shearing\, and more. Stop by Aabnaabin Camp to see how apple face dolls are made\, view\nan antique clock display brought by the Quinte Timekeepers\, and be sure to visit the Ayotte Cabin\, where historic\nreenactors from the 41st Battalion of Brockville Rifles\, 1st Company\, will be performing drills and demonstrating military\nmarching.\nIf you are feeling hungry\, visit the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building courtyard\, where the Keene Lions\nClub food truck will be selling BBQ goods (cash only)\, and Call Creations Catering & Events will have a variety of food\nitems available for purchase. Pick up some traditional fall fair fare from Ben’s Kettle Corn\, which will be selling kettle corn\nand candy floss. Enjoy apple cider and freshly-baked apple treats at the Keene Hotel. There will be bushels of sweet\, juicy\napples\, candy apples\, and fresh apple cider for sale to take home with you\, as well as fresh Empire Cheese curd and\nbread.\nEnjoy traditional music performed by Lotus White on the Weaver Shop porch\, hear the tale of “1862”\, a crankie theatre\nperformed by Glen Caradus in the Agricultural Barn\, and listen to harvest hymns in the Glen Alda Church. Play a game of\napple tic-tac-toe\, participate in some traditional schoolyard games\, and make an apple craft to take home with you. Enjoy\nharvest dances performed by the Peterborough Scottish Country Dancers\, and see sheep-herding demonstrations (both\ntimed demonstrations). Do you think you can eat an apple pie the fastest? Participate in our pie-eating contest at 2 pm on\nthe Village Green! On-site parking is available on a first-\ncome\, first-served basis. DESCRIPTION:This month\, our guest speaker will be Rachel Iris Grant\, therapist and wellness professional. Rachel will present “Hope and Healing: A Workshop on Dementia\, Alzheimer’s\, and Self-Care”. This workshop offers a compassionate and practical overview of dementia and Alzheimer’s\, exploring their impact on individuals and caregivers. Participants will learn to recognize key signs\, understand the challenges of caregiving\, and discover effective self-care strategies to maintain well-being and resilience. Together\, we’ll build a supportive community focused on strength\, understanding\, and hope. \n  \nRachel Iris Grant is a therapist and wellness professional with over 12 years of experience supporting individuals and families through life transitions\, mental health challenges\, and caregiver stress. With a background in social work\, she has worked in clinical and community settings\, including child and family welfare\, schools\, mental health services\, and a dialysis centre. \nRachel is the President of Howard University’s Alumni Club of Eastern Canada\, runs an online Lunch and Learn series on social work topics\, and leads a private practice called Balance Self-Care.
