SUMMARY:Culinary Historians of Canada - Interpreting Canadian Indigenous Cuisine
DESCRIPTION:Shane Chartrand is a celebrated Canadian chef at the forefront of indigenous cuisine in North America.  His culinary and personal journey began in Central Alberta where his family taught him the values of fishing\, hunting and the outdoors. \nHe has received numerous accolades including an honorary degree and the Alumni Award of Excellence from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT)\, an Indigenous Community Award\, and an Indigenous Culinary Arts Award.  As a Red Seal certified chef\, he has honed his craft at fine restaurants and hotels\, including the SC Restaurant\, where he served as Executive Chef.  His most recent venture is Paperbirch by Chartrand located in Edmonton’s Old Strathcona Farmers Market. \nShane has appeared in Top Chef Canada\, Iron Chef Canada\, CHOPPED Canada\, Fridge Wars\, and Wall of Chefs.  He has been featured in the Red Chef Revival documentary\, and Mischif Country on APTN.  As an advocate for indigenous cuisine\, he has shared his expertise at keynote talks and food demonstrations from Toronto\, Northwest Territories\, Boston\, Yukon\, and Vancouver to New York City\, Cairo\, and Sharm El Shiek. \nIn 2019\, his first cookbook tawâw – Progressive Indigenous Cuisine (co-written with Jennifer Cockrall-King) was published to widespread acclaim. \nShane will present a talk exploring indigenous cuisine in Canada inspired by his personal journey to learn about the indigenous communities and their relationships and traditional ways with ingredients and foods. \nOn Zoom. SUMMARY:Lang Pioneer Village 28th Annual Transportation Day Car & Motorcycle Show
DESCRIPTION:Witness a timeline of transportation as enthusiasts from across Ontario showcase their antique and classic cars and vintage motorcycles during the 28th Annual Transportation Day Car & Motorcycle Show\, taking place on Sunday\, July 13 from 10 am to 4 pm at Lang Pioneer Village Museum. \nHop aboard a horse-drawn wagon ride or leisurely peruse the cars\, trucks\, and motorcycles of every make and model as you stroll through the historic village. Be sure to cast your vote for your favourite! Throughout the village\, learn about how transportation has evolved over the years and the roles various trades played in the development of transportation methods. \nView a variety of historic demonstrations including rope making\, weaving on the Jacquard loom\, log hand hewing\, Grist Mill demonstrations\, and more. Take part in some schoolyard games and races\, and make a craft to take home with you at the\nAyotte Cabin. Kids can play in the corn sandbox or colour a picture in the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage\nBuilding (PCAHB) Great Hall and enter it into a colouring contest. Witness a tongue-in-cheek suffrage meeting at the Town\nHall\, and don’t forget to check out the displays brought by the Peterborough County City Paramedics.\nEnjoy music from the 50s to 80s with DJ Del and Jenny Jams in the PCAHB courtyard. Also in the PCAHB courtyard\, the\nKeene Lions Club food truck will be selling BBQ goods (cash only)\, Ben’s Kettle Corn will be popping up fresh kettle corn\,\nand Snowie Canada will be selling snow cones and lemonade. Refreshments and sweet treats will be available for\npurchase throughout the day at the Keene Hotel\, or pick up some fresh Empire Cheese curd and bread in the Cheese\nFactory to take home with you. \nAdmission is $17 for adults\, $12 for students and seniors (60+)\, $9 for youths (ages 5-14)\, free for\nchildren under 5. DESCRIPTION:Freedom Realized and Delayed \nGuest speaker Dr. Natasha Henry-Dixon—renowned historian\, educator\, and advocate for Black history in Canada will speak to the historical significance of Emancipation Day\, illuminating stories of Black resistance\, resilience\, and community-building in Canadian history\, celebrating the richness of Black Canadian culture and contributions. An open Q&A session will allow participants to engage directly with Dr. Henry-Dixon. \nDr. Natasha L. Henry-Dixon \nDr. Natasha Henry-Dixon is an assistant professor of African Canadian History at York University. She is an award-winning author and an award-winning curriculum developer. Dr. Henry-Dixon is a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of her leadership and ongoing work to advance understanding of Black history in Ontario. As a long-time educator and community leader\, Dr. Henry-Dixon’s continues to advance our collective understanding of Canada’s rich and complicated Black history. Dr. Henry-Dixon’s research and publications deal with the enslavement of Black people in Ontario\, their quest for freedom\, the commemoration of Emancipation Day\, and Black communities in the province. \nHer publications include the chapters ” ‘Sold as a Slave for Life’: Black Enslavement in Colonial Canada” (2024)\, “Where\, Oh Where\, is Bet? Locating Enslaved Africans on the Ontario Landscape” (2022)\, “Chloe Cooley: A Black Woman Enslaved in Niagara” (2021); the books Emancipation Day: Celebrating Freedom in Canada (June 2010)\, Talking about Freedom: Celebrating Freedom in Canada (2012)\, a number of youth-focused titles\, and several entries for the Canadian Encyclopaedia on African Canadian history. Recently\, her special biographical series with the Dictionary of Canadian Biography on the lives of a select number of Black people enslaved in colonial Ontario was released. Dr. Henry-Dixon’s most recent public history projects include the self-guided walking tour\, Tracing Mary Ann Shadd Cary’s Footsteps in Mid‑19th Century Black Toronto\, curated and launched in Fall 2024. Her multifaceted work reflects her unwavering commitment to researching\, preserving\, and sharing the histories of Black Canadians.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an afternoon tea and tour in storied Hutchison House\, one of Peterborough’s oldest stone buildings. Initially inhabited by the town’s first resident doctor; John Hutchison provided care for some of the Peter Robinson immigrants after their arrival. During the course of this bus tour you’ll also partake in more intriguing visits. Kawartha Ancestral Research Association (KARA) is ‘a genealogy and heritage site for family historians’ researching in the region. While there\, you’ll have an opportunity to view KARA’s photography exhibit\, Descendants in Our Time\, curated for visitors for this Bicentennial year. Trent Valley Archives (TVA) will also welcome the group. TVA is an organization advocating for the preservation and accessibility of historic archives of the region\, housing more than 1000 cubic feet of ‘documents relating to the people\, events and places connected with the Trent Valley.’ This intriguing afternoon will include a view of the magnificent Peterborough Lift Lock\, a National Historic site and part of the Trent Severn Waterway. August 5 at 7:00 pm \nToronto’s streetcars are an icon of the city and one of Canada’s busiest transit networks. Since the 1960s\, the city has been home to North America’s largest streetcar system. Both today’s streetcar network and the wider city in which they run are heavily influenced by 150 years of transit and transportation history. The creation of the Toronto Transit Commission in 1921 was one of the first examples of a municipally owned transit system and the investments the TTC made throughout the 1920s created a state-of-the-art network that extended service into new suburbs. \nPresenters Brian and Michael Doucet will weave the story of the streetcars with one of an ascendant city which transformed over the past 75 years from a modest\, predominantly British and provincial city\, to Canada’s leading metropolis and one of the world’s most multicultural cities. The streetcars have shaped many neighbourhoods and have ensured that they have remained connected and liveable places. Pre-registration is required and spots are limited! \nAbout Our Speaker:  \nInternational exhibitor\, author and speaker\, Ingo G. Nessel has been collecting stamps since childhood. While growing up in his native Montreal\, early collections in the 1950’s were formed from his parents’ origin of Germany\, as well as his own roots in Canada. In addition to his home club\, the Bramalea Stamp Club\, Ingo is Past President of the Philatelic Specialists Society of Canada; a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada and the Royal Philatelic Society London. \nHe is currently Vice President at Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation. His collecting specialties include Hong Kong; Canada’s 1985-1991 50c Parliament Booklets; a topical collection of sheep; Queen Elizabeth stamp and Royal Household mail; and any philatelic stamp or cover that catches his fancy. DESCRIPTION:This downtown walking tour led by local historians Elwood Jones and Don Willcock will paint a picture of what Peterborough looked like in Peter Robinson’s day\, which he referred to as “The Depot” in 1825. The tour will end in the aptly named Peter Robinson Room at Princess Gardens for refreshments.\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Friday\, August 1\, the tour will also include a stop in Millennium Park to attend the Peterborough Canadian Irish Club’s unveiling of a commemorative plaque in honour of the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Peter Robinson Irish emigrants to our region\, in combination with the 50th anniversary of the PCIC.\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets to both tours cost $20 each and can be purchased on Eventbrite.
