SUMMARY:Town of York Historical Society: Summer Walking Tour Series - Terror in the Town of York: War of 1812
DESCRIPTION:Explore the Town of York on foot with our Museum Coordinator! \nImagine a Toronto where the tallest building is only three stories high\, where Lake Ontario reaches Front Street\, where the wagon wheels grind through the muddy roads\, the air smells of smoke and animal\, and the surrounding lands is farms\, fields\, and forests. This was what the neighbourhood looked like in the early 1800s. \nIn this walking tour\, join us as we explore the beginnings of the area that would become the Town of York\, the events leading up to the War of 1812\, the Battle of York\, and its aftermath while we walk the original 10 blocks of the early city. \nThis tour is the second of four in our Annual Summer Walking Tour Series. All tours start on the steps of St. James Cathedral (facing King Street East) and end at Toronto’s First Post Office. Tours run rain or shine\, and may cover rough ground\, so please dress accordingly. All ages are welcome. Dogs are also welcome as we walk\, though portions of some tours may include areas where they are restricted. \n—Acknowledgement— \nWe acknowledge that the Town of York Historical Society & Toronto’s First Post Office operates on the sacred\, traditional\, and ancestral lands of many First Nations peoples including the Mississaugas of the Credit\, the Anishinabek\, the Chippewa\, the Haudenosaunee\, and the Wendat.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Thunder Bay Museum for a reception celebrating the opening of an exhibit titled Behind Racism: Challenging the Way We Think. \nThe Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society is pleased to announce our hosting of a travelling exhibition titled Behind Racism: Challenging the Way We Think. SUMMARY:OGS Toronto Branch Toronto History Lecture (Virtual): Eric Sehr\, "The Tragic Fate of Huron Elliott: A Forgotten Indigenous Worker on Toronto's Water Tunnel Project"
DESCRIPTION:Toronto Branch is pleased to present this year’s Toronto History Lecture: The Tragic Fate of Huron Elliott: A Forgotten Indigenous Worker on Toronto’s Water Tunnel Project. Our speaker is researcher\, writer and urban planner Eric Sehr. \nOne of the most significant projects undertaken in Toronto during the early 1900s was the construction of the Water Supply Tunnel in Toronto’s harbour. Tragically\, he and three other workers lost their lives just days later. \nThe Lecture will be held online via Zoom on Tuesday\, August 8th\, at 7:30 pm EDT. It is free to attend\, but you must register. The talk will be recorded for later viewing. \nFor more information about the Toronto History Lecture and to register: https://torontofamilyhistory.org/event/toronto-history-lecture-2023/.

SUMMARY:Wesleyville Heritage Village Keynote Barbeque
DESCRIPTION:Good news from Wesleyville Heritage Village! \nWe’re now working with the United Church of Canada on a lease with the Friends of Wesleyville Village for community use of the Church for at least another 50 years.\nWhen approved this new lease would secure community investment in the restoration and upgrade of the Church building required after the 2021 fire. \nThe recovery work is estimated at between $400\,000 and $500\,000. The community\, including the Municipality of Port Hope\, has already contributed over $150\,000 towards this project. We’re planning to start repairing the stained glass windows and the entrance doors this fall and have applied for an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant to meet accessibility needs\, building and fire code requirements. \nFund-raising must continue for this and other Wesleyville Village conservation projects. To donate go to www.wesleyvillevillage.com or email friendsofwesleyvillevillage@gmail.com. \nPlease join us for the Keynote Barbeque Saturday August 12th 5:30 – 8:00 pm. Great food\, music and silent auction. Tickets $35 each at Holton Flowers 62 Walton Street\, Port Hope. Email orders: friendsofwesleyvillevillage@gmail.com.

Les Français commerçaient en bordure du Portage de Toronto\, parallèle à la rivière Humber\, ils y construisent des « magasins royaux » pour l’entreposage des denrées et leur sureté. \nGuides: Catherine Frelin\, Agnès Manivit\, Rolande Smith
