SUMMARY:Toronto Railway Museum Online Lecture: Algonquin Park and the Railways
DESCRIPTION:Join us! “Algonquin Park and the Railways” on June 16th at 7 pm EST. \nRoderick MacKay\, a historian of Algonquin Provincial Park\, will use mainly archival images to provide a Powerpoint overview of some aspects of Park history as influenced by proposed and constructed railways\, including two cross Park railways and a number of smaller logging railways. He will briefly examine what became of the larger railways\, and discuss some of their effects on the environment and vice versa. \nTickets for this event are free\, although registration is required. \nAttendees will get access to our exclusive Zoom meeting room\, where they can engage directly with the presenter and museum historians in a post-lecture Q&A. The event will begin at 7pm Eastern Standard Time\, and will end at 8:30pm EST. \nABOUT RODERICK MACKAY \nRoderick (Rory) MacKay of Harrowsmith was born in Toronto and raised in Toronto and at his family summer cottage in Algonquin Park. A childhood activity shared with his father and brother Niall was watching trains at Leaside Station. While taking a degree in Biology at Queen’s University in Kingston he spent summers from 1972 to 1978 working as a seasonal interpretive naturalist at the Algonquin Park Museum. In 1989 he was hired to set up the Algonquin Park Archives\, with which he is still associated as a volunteer. He worked as a Kingston area secondary school teacher of science and history from 1978 to 2008. He is a licensed research archaeologist particularly interested in logging camps. He is also co-author of “Algonquin” (1993)\, and author of “Spirits of the Little Bonnechere” (1996 revised 2017)\, “More about J. R. Booth” (2015)\, “More About the Camboose Shanty” (2015)\, “A Chronology of Dates and Events of Algonquin Provincial Park” (2018)\, and “Algonquin Park – A Place Like No Other: A history of Algonquin Provincial Park” (2018) available from The Friends of Algonquin Park. He is a recipient of the Friends of Bonnechere Provincial Park Directors’ Award (1998)\, The Friends of Algonquin Park Directors’ Award (2008)\, and the Ontario Archaeological Society Peggi Armstrong Public Archaeology Award (2021).

DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the South Grey Museum invite you to the Speakers Series 2022\, developed and hosted by Barry Penhale. As someone with an interest in the Museum and its programs\, you know how much we have all missed many activities during the COVID-19 pandemic\, including our series of talks. We decided to welcome our supporters back to a virtual series for 2022\, offered as webinars via Zoom with another eight programs\, occurring as usual on the third Wednesday of each month\, April to November\, at 7:00 pm. \nThe Museum being no longer available as a host site\, and with the continuing threat of COVID\, going virtual was the obvious solution. Moving to a virtual delivery brings with it some additional costs\, so we have made this a subscription series\, but we’ve kept the usual at-the-door cost as a household fee of $10 per session. SUMMARY:Museum of Lennox and Addington: 6 Strings Screening and Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:On June 10th\, 1800\, a bitter dispute between rival factions within the Mohawk Village on the Bay of Quinte escalated into violence and the bloody murder of a father and his son\, with others critically wounded. Six Strings is the compelling\, revealing and true account of how the Mohawk people conducted their own system of justice long before the Indian Act. \nThis event represents a moment in time before Indigenous people were obliged to abide by the British colonial court system. Six Strings highlights the testimonies of witnesses to the murders offering a unique glimpse into the lives of the Mohawk people and their complex interactions with the changing world around them. As the investigation unfolds what is revealed is a sophisticated system of traditional justice and a people that embraced reconciliation and forgiveness with the custom of condolence and commitment to move forward. \nThe accompanying 7 minute film will be extended into a 50 min documentary once funding is secured. The future feature film will draw on the talents of Indigenous artists\, historians\, musicians\, and actors to create a vivid and remarkable view of Mohawk life\, the relationship between the British government and the Mohawk Nation\, and the complex circumstances that culminated in the fateful events of June10th\, 1800. \nIn addition to the screening of 6 Strings\, Callie Hill\, Executive Director of Tsi Tyónnheht Onkwawén:na\, who will be presenting the film and exhibit.

SUMMARY:National Trust for Canada (Virtual): Digital Storytelling: Unfolding the Narrative
DESCRIPTION:FREE \nDigital Storytelling makes use of new and existing technology to enhance the story or narrative of a space. For heritage sites\, this creates the potential for the retelling of stories of lost or forgotten sites\, and to recreate the stories of existing sites with an innovative and engaging twist. \nThis webinar will focus on various ways digital stories may be told and the tools available to assist in realizing these goals. Guest speakers Kate Graham\, Peter Coffman and Gonzalo Munoz-Vera will provide some tips and insight as to how digital stories can come to life. \n\nKate Graham is part of the faculty of Media Production and Design Program at Carleton University while simultaneously completing her Ph.D in Architecture. She will discuss the potential of digital storytelling in heritage using the Parliament building to highlight how multiple narratives can be achieved through diversity of medium.\nPeter Coffman is a faculty member in the History and Theory of Architecture program at Carleton University and is an experienced professional photographer. DESCRIPTION:“Rebels on the River: The American Revolution and New Brunswick” — Presentation by Major (Ret’d) Gary Campbell\, PhD \nThe presentation will be about the American Revolution and Sunbury County\, Nova Scotia (present day New Brunswick). This is the only area that rebelled against British rule and where the rebellion was successfully suppressed. It will discuss the two rebel invasions that occurred and will examine the interactions between the Indigenous people\, the New England Planters\, the New Englanders of the District of Maine and the British forces. This is an interesting period of history and one that is not generally known. \nGary Campbell is a retired CAF officer who is interested in the military history of New Brunswick. He became interested in the story of the American Revolution in New Brunswick when he was researching his first book “The Road to Canada”\, a military history of the St. John River.

The importance of history and learning while working toward reconciliation with tie-ins to work that the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society has done to highlight Dr. Bryce’s legacy\, as 2022 will be the 100th anniversary of the publication of “A National Crime.” \nA member of the Gitxsan First Nation\, Cindy is honoured to serve as the Executive Director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society and a professor at McGill University’s School of Social Work. She has over 30 years of experience working in child welfare and Indigenous children’s rights and has published more than 75 articles on topics relating to reconciliation\, Indigenous theory\, First Nations child welfare and human rights. Cindy was honoured to work with First Nations colleagues on a successful human rights challenge to Canada’s inequitable provision of child and family services and failure to implement Jordan’s Principle. This hard-fought litigation has resulted in hundreds of thousands of services being provided to First Nations children\, youth and families. \nShe recently served on the Pan American Health Commission on Health Equity and Inequity and fundamentally believes that culturally-based equity is fundamental to meaningful reconciliation. Cindy is frequently sighted in the company of the Caring Society’s reconciliation Am-bear-rister\, Spirit Bear\, engaging children in meaningful actions to implement the TRC Calls to Action. Arn and John will talk specifically about how mining in northern Ontario has shaped both local and national history. \nJohn Sandlos is a professor of history at Memorial University of Newfoundland\, with a research focus on the history of abandoned mines in Northern Canada. He is the author of Hunters at the Margin and co-editor (with Arn Keeling) of Mining and Communities in Northern Canada: History\, Politics\, Memory. He lives in St. John’s\, Newfoundland and Labrador. \nArn Keeling is a professor of geography at Memorial University of Newfoundland. DESCRIPTION:The Ontario Historical Society is pleased to participate again this year in Doors Open Toronto\, on Saturday May 28 and Sunday May 29\, 2022. Please visit us at the historic John McKenzie House at 34 Parkview Avenue in Willowdale\, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\, with last entry at 4:45 p.m. \nArchitecture\nYear: 1913 \nStyle: Edwardian (1900-1916) \nOriginal Architect: John McKenzie \nBuilding Description\nThe John McKenzie House was built in 1913\, in a style that has been described as Queen Anne Revival\, Arts and Crafts\, and Edwardian. The grand red brick house is profiled by a large L -shaped veranda with stylized Doric columns. Significant interior features include the centre hall plan\, a vestibule door and sidelights with bevelled leaded glass\, a large leaded art glass window that lights the landing of the main staircase\, panelled doors\, and original radiators. \nIn 1993\, the Ontario Historical Society (OHS) entered into a partnership with the former City of North York to preserve and restore the John McKenzie House\, which serves as the provincial headquarters of the OHS. In 2016\, a slate roof restoration project was completed to return the roof back to its original condition. \nVisitor Experience\nVisitors to the John McKenzie House can learn about the history of the house\, which was slated for demolition in the early 1990s. The house was ultimately saved and restored by the Ontario Historical Society (OHS) with support from the local Willowdale community. Hear about the role the John McKenzie House has played in the history of the neighbourhood. \nVisitors will also be able to visit the adjacent buildings and grounds. This includes the Coach House which houses the OHS library\, stable\, and milk house and Parkview Neighbourhood Garden\, where volunteers will be working (weather permitting). Staff of the OHS will also offer insight into how a not-for-profit heritage organization works across Ontario to help protect and preserve our natural and built heritage. \nPhotography / Filming\nInterior photography permitted\, including tripod\nInterior filming permitted\, without tripod \nAccessibility Notes\nRamp access to ground floor at rear entrance. DESCRIPTION:The Ontario Historical Society is pleased to participate again this year in Doors Open Toronto\, on Saturday May 28 and Sunday May 29\, 2022. Please visit us at the historic John McKenzie House at 34 Parkview Avenue in Willowdale\, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\, with last entry at 4:45 p.m. \nArchitecture\nYear: 1913 \nStyle: Edwardian (1900-1916) \nOriginal Architect: John McKenzie \nBuilding Description\nThe John McKenzie House was built in 1913\, in a style that has been described as Queen Anne Revival\, Arts and Crafts\, and Edwardian. The grand red brick house is profiled by a large L -shaped veranda with stylized Doric columns. Significant interior features include the centre hall plan\, a vestibule door and sidelights with bevelled leaded glass\, a large leaded art glass window that lights the landing of the main staircase\, panelled doors\, and original radiators. \nIn 1993\, the Ontario Historical Society (OHS) entered into a partnership with the former City of North York to preserve and restore the John McKenzie House\, which serves as the provincial headquarters of the OHS. In 2016\, a slate roof restoration project was completed to return the roof back to its original condition. \nVisitor Experience\nVisitors to the John McKenzie House can learn about the history of the house\, which was slated for demolition in the early 1990s. The house was ultimately saved and restored by the Ontario Historical Society (OHS) with support from the local Willowdale community. Hear about the role the John McKenzie House has played in the history of the neighbourhood. \nVisitors will also be able to visit the adjacent buildings and grounds. This includes the Coach House which houses the OHS library\, stable\, and milk house and Parkview Neighbourhood Garden\, where volunteers will be working (weather permitting). As a guest speaker\, Dan provides fascinating stories of Ontario history presented with humour and passion. See www.danbuchananhistoryguy.com. \nHe has written three books and is going to speak with us about his second book\, “38 Hours To Montreal: William Weller and the Governor General’s Race of 1840”. It tells the story of an amazing sleigh ride in February 1840\, all the way from Toronto to Montreal – in under 38 hours. The book is presented as a road trip\, with the reader sitting on the bench with Mr. Weller as he drives through every little town and village on the Kingston Road and the King’s Highway between Toronto and Montreal. There is a bit of local history about each place as the trip progresses and also there is also lots of historical context which explains why Mr. Weller is driving the GG to Montreal in such a hurry. \nLink will be sent to members a few day before the event. SUMMARY:SDG Historical Society: A Celebration of Friendship #Cornwall1784
DESCRIPTION:Experience history as it comes to life! On May 20-22\, Lamoureux Park will be the site of a celebration commemorating how Ontario began in 1784. Created and organized by the SDG Historical Society through the Cornwall Community Museum\, three days of historical displays and cultural performances will fill the park. The festival will bring together over two hundred and fifty reenactors\, equipment\, artifacts\, and activities representing three cultures that played significant roles in the area’s early history: the Indigenous peoples (Mohawks)\, the French-Canadians\, and the Loyalists (British\, Scottish\, and Palatines). This is a “rain or shine” activity that is free to the public and open to all. \nFew people travelling down Water Street in Cornwall realize they are passing by one of Ontario and Canada’s key historic sites. On the banks of the St. Lawrence River near what is now Lamoureux Park\, two hundred and thirty-eight years ago a group of exiles from the United States landed to make a new home. \nThese United Empire Loyalists had sided with Great Britain in the American Revolution. They left behind their homes and belongings in Upper New York State to stay loyal to the Crown and move to the wilderness of Canada. It was here that the Loyalists had been granted land by the King for their service. \nThe group of five hundred settlers landed that June day in 1784 led by Sir John Johnson and made up of officers\, soldiers\, and their families. They faced a forested wilderness and years of hardship but from there\, the roots of what would become Ontario began and Canada started its settlement of Upper Canada and beyond. \nAn exciting weekend of events is planned for this celebration. Lamoureux Park becomes a historic military encampment with one camp representing the Loyalists of 1784 and another one\, the War of 1812. Re-enactors will show life as it would have been two hundred years ago and provide entertainment over the weekend including military maneuvers. Children from the audience can dress up in British soldier uniforms and drill with wooden muskets. The Voltigeurs regiment from Quebec will also be part of the event providing a bilingual service for visitors. A French speaking Towne Crier dressed in the French Blue military uniform will announce events along with a British Towne Crier dressed in his resplendent red tunic. \nStarting off the Cornwall 1784 Celebration on Friday by getting immersed in French-Canadian culture presenting an evening of music\, dance and artisans sharing their proud heritage in Canada and in this area. Une soiree d’antan Canadienne will wrap up the day with music and dance by various entertainers from Eastern Ontario and Quebec. \nOn Saturday evening\, the Glengarry Highland Games will present a taste of the Games with a mini tattoo featuring pipe bands\, the famous MacCulloch Dancers\, Scottish fiddlers\, and great Celtic entertainment. \nOn Saturday and Sunday\, the Mohawk culture will be in the spotlight with The North Native American Traveling College (NNATC) of Akwesasne featuring a rotating display of basket making\, rattlers and drums makers\, medicinal herbs\, and fur cleaning process. A travel troop composed of singers and dancers will perform and explain the songs and their cultural significance as well as get the crowd involved in their celebration by joining in the dance. \nThis weekend celebration is the first time all three cultures have joined together in Cornwall to share their heritage. Whether you are interested in history\, want to enjoy first-class entertainment\, or just enjoy a day outside wandering among the displays\, you need to be in Cornwall on May 20\, 21 and 22. The best thing of all for the weekend is that it is free.
