SUMMARY:London & Middlesex Historical Society: October 2023 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Brian ‘Chip’ Martin\, “From Underground Railroad to Rebel Refuge: Canada and the Civil War” \nRetired reporter and journalist from the London Free Press and London author\, Chip in his latest book\, reveals the breadth of this country’s involvement in the American Civil War. Martin’s research found that more than 40\,000 Americans came to Canada during the war and that twenty thousand people from Canada\, including the London region\, went south to serve on both sides. \nMartin’s research explores what happened before\, during and after the Civil War not only in the London area\, but across Southwestern Ontario and the Niagara region. \nThe speaker programme for the London and Middlesex Historical Society takes place on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm at the Old Courthouse building\, 399 Ridout St. N.\, London. \nNotice: Limited free parking in lot behind the Courthouse\, off King Street West. SUMMARY:Kingston Historical Society October 2023 Meeting (In-Person and Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Kingston textile historian Joanna Dermenjian will report on her research on “Women’s domestic and charitable making of cloth and fibers”. In particular\, she will focus on the effort made by women in Kingston and across Canada during World War II to produce quilts for distribution to soldiers\, civilians and hospital in Britain and Europe. \n\nWe return to in-person meetings in January\, now at the Kingsbridge Retirement Community which has graciously agreed to let us use their very comfortable theatre lounge for our meetings. This is a most attractive location with comfortable armchairs and the most up-to-date audio-visual equipment. The spaciousness of this venue also allows us to offer light refreshments and an opportunity for socialization after each lecture. \nThe Kingsbridge Retirement Community\, 950 Centennial Drive is the tall building just south of Princess Street. Ask for the theatre lounge on the lower floor. Enter by the prominent door on the east side. Someone will be at the door to give you directions and to check your double vaccination status. There is free visitor parking along the north side of the building. Express buses #501 and 502 serve upper Princess Street to very near Kingsbridge. Bus #4 offers slower service along Princess Street from downtown. Use the Centennial Drive bus stop. \nCovid precautions: Please wear a mask on entry to the building\, but you may remove your mask once in the room. Proof of vaccination is mandatory. The building is kept meticulously sanitized.

SUMMARY:Peterborough Historical Society Public Lecture: “Peterborough Waterworks” Dennis Carter-Edwards
DESCRIPTION:A city’s waterworks is largely out of sight and normally attracts little attention. However\, the history of waterworks is central to understanding the history of urban growth and planning. In\nthe late nineteenth century\, Peterborough faced a crisis. Lack of a water works system placed the town at risk of destruction from fire while the absence of a sewer system created a serious health risk from water borne diseases. A ready supply of clean water was urgent. \nDennis Carter-Edwards\, retired Parks Canada historian\, will explore how the city fathers\, leading citizens and provincial authorities helped Peterborough achieve these essential services.

SUMMARY:West Toronto Junction Historical Society (In-Person and Virtual): Vincenzo Pietropaolo
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on October 5th as Vincenzo Pietropaolo presents his latest book Toronto as Community: Fifty Years of Photographs. \nToronto as Community represents more than fifty years of photography by Vincenzo Pietropaolo\, “one of Canada’s pre-eminent documentary photographers” (Canadian Geographic). The photographs are grouped around short essays that explore Pietropaolo’s particular interests and observations\, often questions of social justice\, which\, in turn\, inform the photographs themselves \nThis poetic portrayal of the city of Toronto documents the daily life of ordinary citizens\, at work\, at play\, in celebration\, in protest\, and in mourning. The book includes images of many parks and natural areas and some of the city’s architecture. All those who participated in Vince’s exceptional photo presentation a year ago on The Stockyards Then and Now will look forward to this showing of photos from his new book. \nDate & Time: October 5th\, 2023 at 7 pm\nLocation: St. John’s Anglican Church\, corner of Humberside Ave. and Quebec Ave.\nThis event will be on Zoom as well as in-person. We will have the Zoom details here closer to the event. \nVincenzo Pietropaolo has been a dedicated chronicler of Toronto for more than fifty years. His attachment to the city and its people is demonstrated on every page of Toronto as Community. He was a city planner with the City of Toronto for over fifteen years before turning to photography full-time. His focus lies in social documentary photography and photojournalism\, and his projects have taken him to many cities around the world. Pietropaolo is an award-winning photographer and has been deemed “one of Canada’s pre-eminent documentary photographers” by Canadian Geographic Magazine. He collaborated with Jane Jacobs by providing photographs for an exhibition based on her seminal book\, The Death and Life of Great American Cities. He and his partner live in Toronto\, where they are avid urban farmers in their own backyard.

DESCRIPTION:Wed. Oct. 4 — Rousseau Room – Swansea Town Hall \nSPEAKER: Cameron Tolton “From Junction High School to World Class Collegiate Institute: The Story of Humberside” \nHumberside Collegiate in the west end of Toronto has a history dating back to 1892. SUMMARY:Campbell House: Relic Linear Park Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to the launch event for Relic Linear Park! \nMark your calendars for September 29 at 5 pm\, when we’ll be celebrating the completion of the first part of a new linear park system for Ward 10. \nJoin us at the park’s new Southern Gateway at Queen and Simcoe\, beside Campbell House Museum (160 Queen St W\, at Osgoode Subway). There will be coffee and cookies home-baked at the museum\, plus special guest speakers! \nThe Relic Linear Park system is a community-led vision that embraces the inclusion of architectural carved stones from Toronto’s past set within a unifying corridor of green within the Grange Neighbourhood. The relic stones were rescued from demolished downtown buildings\, then stored for decades at Scarborough’s Guild Park and Gardens. \nThe Southern Gateway of Relic Linear Park is a project of the Grange Community Association in partnership with the City of Toronto and Campbell House Museum. \nThe Southern Gateway is funded in part by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario [https://feddev-ontario.canada.ca]\, and by the City of Toronto.
