SUMMARY:Lang Pioneer Village Museum - Spooky All Hallows' Eve
DESCRIPTION:You are in for a frightfully good time as the historic village transforms into an array of haunting scenes during Spooky All Hallows’ Eve\, taking place on Friday & Saturday\, October 24 & 25 at Lang Pioneer Village Museum. From 6 pm to 9 pm each night\, enjoy an evening of fun and games as you are introduced to the origins of some of our favourite Halloween traditions. \nHold onto your seat as a tractor and wagon takes you deeper into the darkness of the village. Discover the history of coffins and body snatching at the Carpenter Shop. Meet Stingy Jack and listen to his sorry tale. Witness a traditional 1890s Halloween party and take part in some party games. Be sure to watch out for the man-eating plant from Madagascar at the Fitzpatrick House\, and\ntake a stroll through the graveyard. Hear the story of werewolves and give your best howl at the moon. \nVisit the witch’s lair to find out your witch’s name\, and see her swampy brew bubbling in her cauldron over the fire. Listen to sea shanties and pirate jokes in the Cider Barn\, and see if you can find all the items on their treasure map. You just might receive a piece of treasure for yourself if you do. Take a trip to the stars on a magic carpet ride\, visit the fairies at their lodge\, and try some\nhula hooping in the Agricultural Barn. If you are brave enough to enter the maze\, make sure you don’t get lost! \nParticipate in a class on poisons and potions in the School House. Do you dare feel what is lurking in the mystery crocks at the Tinsmith Shop\, or try a treat from the Botched Bakery? Witness the mind-bending magic show in the Weaver Shop (sets at 6:30\, 7:30\, and 8:30 but seating is limited)! Curious about what your future holds? If you ask her nicely\, Madam Fortune just might\nreveal what is to come. \nListen to the Michi Saagiig people’s tale of the Wendigo. Hear about paranormal investigations undertaken at the museum by ghost hunters\, the Paranormal Seekers\, and see some of the specialized equipment they use to make their discoveries. Warm up by the fire and learn about Samhain\, a Celtic fire festival. \nIf your nerves are rattled and making you hungry\, stop by the Hotel to purchase some delicious hot chocolate and sweet treats\, or visit the Bewdley Lions Club food truck for some BBQ goods (cash only). Ben’s Kettle Corn will be on-site popping up fresh kettle corn\, and you can purchase candy and sweet treats in the General Store as you learn about the origins of trick-or-treating. \nDon’t forget to come disguised to blend in with the spirits and ghosts lurking in the Village\, or have your face painted in the PCAHB Great Hall by Faces by 2. Children will receive treat bags at the end of the evening to enjoy on their way home. \nEnjoy an evening of eerie fun and learn a thing or two about how Halloween traditions came to be with Spooky All Hallows’ Eve\, Friday & Saturday\, October 24 & 25 at Lang Pioneer Village Museum! This all-ages event is sure to be a lot of fun\, with just a little tomfoolery to get you into the Halloween spirit. Please note that while some origin stories are quite dark\, this is not a frightful\nexperience. Admission is $17 for adults\, $12 for students and seniors (60+)\, $9 for youths (ages 2-14)\, and free for children under 2. Family admission is also available for $45 and includes 2 adults and up to 4 youths ages 2-14. Tickets for the event are available for purchase in advance online and at the door. SUMMARY:Historical Society of Ottawa Speaker Series : Épopée maritime des Raftsmen
DESCRIPTION:Guest Speaker Isabelle Regout — Alexandre Pampalon\, Musée des Cageux du fleuve Saint-Laurent \nSeveral generations have put down roots in logging camps. SUMMARY:Glencoe & District Historical Society Presentation - Faith\, Family and Migration: The Old Colony Mennonite Experience
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a captivating presentation exploring the rich and complex history of the Mennonite people—from their radical beginnings during the 16th-century Anabaptist movement in Europe to their migrations across continents\, including the journeys to Canada and Mexico. \nThis talk will guide attendees through centuries of faith\, migration\, and cultural identity\, offering insights into how various Mennonite and Amish groups emerged\, each with distinct beliefs\, customs\, and approaches to community life. Whether you’re curious about the theological roots of Anabaptism\, the historical pressures that led to Mennonite migrations\, or the differences between Old Colony\, Conservative\, and Progressive Mennonite communities (and how the Amish fit into this tapestry)\, there will be something here for everyone. \nThe presentation is grounded in historical research and delivered with respect for the simple and deeply intentional lives these communities choose to live. It’s both informative and personal\, especially as it touches on themes from the recently published book\, Not My Kind of Mennonite—a reflective and honest account of life in the Old Colony Mennonite tradition. \nMaria Moore is a Canadian writer\, advocate\, and former registered nurse whose work explores themes of resilience\, identity\, generational trauma\, and the search for personal empowerment. Raised in an Old Colony Mennonite community in Mexico\, she later immigrated to Canada and spent over forty years working in healthcare\, including mental health support. Her debut memoir\, Not My Kind of Mennonite (FriesenPress\, 2023)\, traces her family’s journey across borders and generations\, shedding light on the silent struggles faced by many women and men in closed communities. Now living in southwestern Ontario with her husband and their dog\, Maria continues to give back through volunteer work\, board service\, and public speaking that champions the voices of those too often overlooked.

SUMMARY:Oakville Historical Society Speaker Night: First In\, Last Out. Women's Division\, Royal Canadian Air Force\, World War II
DESCRIPTION:The Oakville Historical Society is pleased to announce the speaker for our next “Speaker Night”\, Ms. Glad Bryce\, on Wednesday\, November 19111\, 2025. This will be held via ZOOM at 7:30 pm – so no travelling on a cold evening required! \nMs. Bryce is extremely accomplished\, authoring many books\, teaching at the high school\, college and university levels\, as well as being an accomplished athlete. She won 3 gold medals at the 2009 FINA World Swim Championships in Sweden. She is additionally a renowned water-colourist with her paintings appearing in many homes and galleries. \nThis presentation will provide a historical view of the Royal Canadian Air Force\, Women’s Division\, as well as Nursing sisters\, during World War II. Ms. Bryce’s book\, entitled “First in Last Out”\, includes extensive photographs and documents detailing the history of the Women’s Division from its formation to its disbanding in 1946\, as well as stories that show the contributions and bravery of the women who served. \nOur presenter and author of this publication will share the stories of these women\, showing they can be a source of inspiration for all people\, as we learn of their challenging paths during the war. It is notable that when Queen Elizabeth was given a copy of Glad’s book “First !n Last Out” during a visit to Canada in 2010\, she immediately began reading and was so engrossed\, she almost missed her next appointment – and the book was placed in the Queen’s personal library\, later sending Glad a personal letter complimenting her work. \nOne could write pages on this amazing presenter\, and we hope you take the opportunity to meet her\, via Zoom\, on November 19th at 7:30 pm- via Zoom! \nPLEASE NOTE: THE LINK TO CONNECT TO THE ZOOM PRESENTATION WILL BE SHARED IN THE FUTURE!

SUMMARY:PAMA Presentation - Railway History of George Laidlaw
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at Peel Art Gallery\, Museum and Archives (PAMA) for a presentation on the life and times of railway promoter George Laidlaw\, “The Prince of Bonus Hunters”\, by his great great grandson Doug Paterson. \nPresentation is free with admission. \n  \nVisitors are welcome to visit the exhibition All Aboard: The Railways of Peel. \n  \nGeorge Laidlaw emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1855. His ability to raise money to build railways was legendary as he oversaw the construction of 500 km of railway in southern Ontario\, including the Credit Valley Railway and the Toronto Grey and Bruce Railway. \n  \nDoug Paterson is a retired banker living in his ancestral Laidlaw family home on Balsam Lake. He has an interest in family history and by good fortune has access to a trove of historical information and artifacts. He is currently writing a book on the Laidlaw and Corby families\, titled “Rails and Rye”.
