DESCRIPTION:You\, your friends and colleagues are cordially invited to attend the launch of Family History Month by the Oxford County Branch of Ontario Ancestors. \nThis Open House event is being held on Tuesday\, September 30\, 2025\, at The Governor’s House (Oxford Genealogical Society) 82 Light Street\, Woodstock ON from 10 am until noon. \nDedicated to supporting and promoting genealogical and family history research since 1979\, we focus on collecting and preserving information that will be useful for anyone researching ancestors who lived in Oxford County and beyond its borders. \nThe Mary Liley Reading Room Resource Library\, located in the Governor’s House\, is open to the public on Tuesdays\, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 4 pm. \nDuring Family History Month\, new researchers will be given a starter kit with tips for finding their ancestors and essential forms to keep all the names and dates organized.  Opportunities for signing up for genealogy classes or exploring your DNA results will be available. \nStaffed by experienced volunteers who can demonstrate finding obituaries\, wills\, land records\, township history books\, church histories\, historical atlases\, Tweedsmuir Local Histories\, military\,\ncemetery transcriptions for the 102 cemeteries in Oxford County\, over 500 family histories\, specific to Oxford County families and much more. The volunteers are available to answer questions and help visitors locate information to fill in the branches of their family tree or use the computers and microfilm reader.  During Family History Month\, we are offering free scanning of albums or scrapbooks (bring your own USB).

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by the editors of a new book titled\, Behind the Bricks: The Life and Times of the Mohawk Institute\, about the history of Canada’s oldest and longest running residential school located in Brantford. The school was a model for the larger residential school system in Canada\, and learning about its history helps us work towards reconciliation. September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation\, so join us to learn more about this important part of Canada’s history. She is also a graduate faculty member at Trent University.  She is a founding member of the Mohawk Institute Research Group. Alison is a former board member of the Ontario Historical Society\, and the current book review editor for Ontario History.

SUMMARY:Swansea Historical Society - Governor Simcoe Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:We hope you can join us for this year’s version of the Annual Governor Simcoe Walking Tour\, to be offered in two parts on Saturday\, September 27.  As in past years\, this FREE guided walking tour will retrace a portion of Governor Simcoe’s 1793 expedition up the Toronto Carrying Place portage route. Part 1 of the tour will start at 9:30 am at the Rousseau plaque (8 South Kingsway\, beside the Petro Canada station)\, heading north\, mainly along Riverside Drive\, and finishing near Bloor Street about noon.  After a break for lunch on Bloor Street\, Part 2 will start at 1:00 pm at the Alex Ling Fountain (north-west corner of Bloor and Jane Streets)\, and then head farther north\, mainly following residential streets east of the Humber River. Participants are free to join or leave the walk at any point along the route. \nAll are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Please Join Us for SPEAKER NIGHT – Thursday\, September 25th\, 2025 – 7:00 pm\, at the Coach House: Stonehooking 1830’s to 1920 – An era that gave way to Concrete and Prohibition with Mr. Ross Gordon Noel. \nThis evening will provide a historical view of Stonehooking – the trade\, and Stonehookers\, the ships\, the captains and their crews. \nThe significance of stonehooking to towns on the north shore of Lake Ontario\, and what on earth does it have to do with craft beer? \nFollowing his passion for beer (and large projects)\, Ross embraced the craft beer movement and founded Stonehooker Brewing Company in February 2016. The brewery was built on Lakeshore\, just east of Port Credit\, and opened in 2019 with 6 beers on tap\, a taproom\, and a brand that pays tribute to the historical significance of a forgotten industry. Now in its 7th year of operation\, Stonehooker is the proud brewery of award-winning beer with 54 recipes and many local favourites\, all traditionally brewed with all-natural ingredients. \nBorn and raised in Toronto\, Ross graduated from the Ryerson Business program in 1984. His career in IT spanned 3 decades and multiple industries including manufacturing\, telecom\, finance and public utilities. He has held management roles in several Canadian banks and he’s also a certified PMP (Project Management Professional). An avid sailor\, Ross maintains a keen interest in the history and culture of Port Credit and Lake Ontario. \nHope to see you soon!

All are welcome to attend. \nNote that this presentation will coincide with the annual Canada Army Run\, which will entail some street closures east of the Library. It is recommended that attendees consider arriving by public transit or\, if driving\, approach and locate parking west of the Library.

MacDonald House at 121 Centre Street\, Thornhill\,  for the official unveiling of the Moments of Algoma Group of Seven in Thornhill easel and Group of Seven Commemorative Plaques. \nThis special event is co-hosted by the Thornhill Historical Society\, City of Vaughan and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program (SNAP) and Moments of Algoma. \nFollowing the ceremony\, guests are welcome to participate in guided walking tours through the village of Thornhill\, visiting the former homes of five Group of Seven members. The day will also feature a en Plein Air art show\, family art event and community booths. \nThe new easel installation commemorates the Group of Seven’s artistic and cultural legacy and their connection to Thornhill. As part of the broader Moments of Algoma Group of Seven Touring Route\, this interpretive panel places Thornhill on the map as a significant stop in the story of Canada’s artistic identity. \nThe Group of Seven Commemorative Plaques\, installed in honour of the Thornhill Historical Society’s 50th anniversary in 2024\, mark the homes once occupied by the five members of the Group of Seven who called Thornhill home. \nThis project is the result of vision\, dedication\, and collaboration—led by the Thornhill Historical Society and supported by the City of Vaughan\, TRCA’s Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program (SNAP)\, Moments of Algoma\, and our generous donor and benefactor\, Lorna Rogers. DESCRIPTION:Who were the wives\, mothers\, and women during the War of 1812? Why has history largely forgotten these integral players in Canadian history and is this anyone’s fault? We can formulate our answers to these questions by examining and sharing stories of womanhood during the War. We will discuss famous women like Laura Secord and try to piece together the plight of the under-recorded women\, the wives and families of the British Army and Canadian Militia. What are the challenges in finding and presenting this history? Why is it so important to do so? \nOur presenter is Emma Stack: “I graduated with an Honours Degree in History and Philosophy. I went on to obtain and Bachelor of Education Degree and an Early Childhood Education Diploma. I taught history at the high school level. I have written and published four novels\, set during the War of 1812. I am an 1812 reenactor and the Historical Interpreter for the Royal Scots Regiment. DESCRIPTION:Join our Museum Coordinator on this walking tour and explore the surviving built environment of the original 10 blocks of Toronto and discover how the Town of York\, which started with a population of a couple hundred residents\, became the City of Toronto in 1834\, with a population of just under 10\,000. \nThis tour is part of our Annual Summer Walking Tour Series. It begins on the steps of St. James Cathedral (facing King Street East) and end at Toronto’s First Post Office Museum (260 Adelaide Street East). Tours run rain or shine\, and may cover rough ground\, so please dress accordingly. \n–Please Note– \nInformation\, histories\, and stories included our Annual Summer Series may overlap between tours.

SUMMARY:Thunder Bay Museum: Movie Night: Drowning in Dreams
DESCRIPTION:This will be an in-person event.   \nDescription: \nGet ready to immerse yourself in a unique cinematic experience. Drowning in Dreams\, a captivating documentary\, follows Thunder Bay businessman Fred Broennle as he becomes consumed by a near-mythical mission: to raise the luxurious steam yacht Gunilda–considered the most beautiful shipwreck in the world–from its resting place 300 feet beneath Lake Superior. This is a rare chance to see this film at the Thunder Bay Museum\, an event that promises to be a high-stakes odyssey of greed\, guilt\, and devastation. \nDrowning in Dreams is provided courtesy of the National Film Board of Canada. \nDrowning in Dreams is not rated by the Motion Picture Association. The film contains scenes that may not be suitable for children\, including discussions of drowning\, diving accidents\, and death\, as well as a brief depiction of a deceased person and brief partial nudity. Viewer discretion is advised. \nTickets are included with admission to the Thunder Bay Museum (by donation): \n\n$8.00 for Adults\n$3.00 for Children (6-17)\nFree for Children (5 and under)\nFree with Membership\n\nLimited seating is available. This unique and immersive look at Eglinton West’s cultural district dives into music landmarks and figures that helped create the ‘Toronto sound’. \nThe Canada Black Music Archives (CBMA) is pleased to announce a special addition to the 2025 season.
