Sept. 23\, 2023: As in past years\, this FREE guided walking tour will retrace a portion of Simcoe’s 1793 expedition up the Toronto Carrying Place portage route. \nAs in past years\, Part 1 of the tour will start at 9:30 am at the Rousseau plaque (8 South Kingsway\, beside the Petro Canada station)\, heading north\, mainly along Riverside Drive\, and finishing near Bloor Street. After a break for lunch on Bloor Street\, Part 2 will start at 1:00 pm at the Alex Ling Fountain (north-west corner of Bloor and Jane Streets)\, and then head farther north\, mainly following residential streets a short distance east of the Humber River. Participants are free to join or leave the walk at any point along the route.

DESCRIPTION:Ron Brown’s latest book\, Top 170 Unusual Things to See in Ontario\, was newly released and expanded in 2022. Using the book as a starting point\, this illustrated lecture will explore some of Ontario’s most unusual features and landscapes including such phenomena as The Screaming Heads\, Guelph’s “Notre Dame”\, Toronto’s Graffiti Alleys\, and its “Luminous Veil” on the Bloor Street Viaduct as well as the light show in Brockville’s railway tunnel. \nThis lecture is a live\, in-person event in Cameron Hall. You do not need to pre-register to attend – just show up. \nThe lecture will also be available online as a live webcast for which we do ask you to pre-register. Registration opens soon. \nBIOGRAPHY: \nRon Brown is an award-winning travel writer whose pieces have been published in the Toronto Star\, the Globe and Mail\, Canadian Geographic Magazine\, and VIA Rail Magazine. He has published more than twenty books on the heritage of Ontario and Canada\, and he lectures on\, and leads tours of\, heritage landscapes across Ontario. He has participated on TVO’s Studio Two panels to determine Ontario’s “most historic town\,” Ontario’s “prettiest town\,” and Ontario’s “best main street.” Ron is a member of the Travel Media Association of Canada and is past chair of The Writers’ Union of Canada\, whose “Freedom to Read Award” he received in 2015 for his ongoing promotion of freedom to read and write in Canada. \nThis lecture is co-sponsored by Mary Morton Tours.

DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, August 7\, 1968\, an event occurred on the Humber River that resonates in the Warren Park community to this day\, 52 years later! That event made the front page of the citywide newspapers. The Globe and Mail trumpeted the headline ‘Four girls\, dog\, wade into deep troubles’ – the front page of the Toronto Daily Star carried a picture of a terrified girl with the by line ‘3 Hours Of Terror On The Humber’ with an accompanying dedicated page of pictures and captions with the headline ‘Raging Humber maroons 4 terror-stricken girls.’ Not to be out done\, The Telegram quoted one of the girls ‘I Can’t Do It\, I’m Afraid.’ \nWhat was the dire event that captured the headlines that fateful day in August on the Humber River? In this short documentary\, we will explore the events of that day as seen through the eyes of surviving participants. Through interviews\, photographs and other media\, including a previously unseen short 8MM film of that day\, one will understand how a simple misadventure became a seminal moment for everyone involved. Traductologue et traductrice \nL’histoire nous a laissé de Jérôme un portrait à la fois précis et fragmentaire. Précis parce que certains de ses écrits –surtout des lettres et des préfaces à ses traductions et textes exégétiques– sont extrêmement révélateurs du personnage\, notamment de ses rapports avec les autorités publiques et religieuses. SUMMARY:UEL Kawartha Branch September 2023 Meeting (Virtual): The Elizabeth Beard Story
DESCRIPTION:“Valiant Amazing: The Elizabeth Beard Story” by Andrew MacLean \nElizabeth Beard was a young Loyalist woman from Philadelphia who ultimately fought alongside her soldier husband during the Revolution. She was with him on a ship which was attacked\, and she manned the cannon\, tearing off parts of her dress to use as wadding. \nAfter that she went on land and was part of a partisan attack on a small group of Rebels. Later\, she popped up again\, in what is now Florida\, in a besieged fort\, again manning a cannon. After that she became a prisoner\, and was ultimately part of a swap at the end of the war. \nShe then sailed aboard the Martha from New York City to Nova Scotia.  The Martha became separated from the refugee fleet in heavy fog and crashed on a rock. SUMMARY:Museum of Lennox & Addington: Gone Fishin’ Closing Talk: Meet the Collector
DESCRIPTION:Jump on this last chance to see Gone Fishin’ and hear from the collector behind it all\, Donald Stokes. In this talk\, he will be speaking to his years of collecting pieces of Canada’s fishing history. Questions are encouraged and you are invited to bring your own fishing gear to learn some tips and tricks! \nPresenter Bio: \nMy grandfather used to have an old boathouse\, in Bolsover Ontario. It seemed like a special place and its memories remain sweet as time moves on. Every nook and cranny held something magical\, from the old metal fishing rods\, to our cedar strip boat\, to even gently peeking into the water hoping to catch a sudden swirl of a muskellunge. \nThis eventually led to pursuing older fishing items as a collection. At first it began with some common names with no regard to origin. After extensive travel in various parts of the country\, the collection become more focused and it has now been thirty years and counting. \nTime: 7:00pm (doors open at 6:30PM). \nDemographic: Best for ages 13+ \nNo pre-registration is required.

DESCRIPTION:2023 ushers in a new fall studio tour in Eastern Ontario; with 28 artists signed up to welcome you to 18 different Studios – plus the Museum! We are proud to be a sponsor of this County-wide event. \nFrom 10AM – 5PM on Saturday\, September 9th and Sunday\, September 10th\, artists Diane Phaneuf & Elaine Taranu will have their art on display at the Museum. \nDiane Phaneuf is an Acrylic Painter “…captivated by ‘interior landscapes’\, taking an off-centre or interpretive approach and playing with angles and colourful contrasts.” \nElaine Taranu is a Painter who works mostly on canvas\, using oil and acrylic paints\, ink\, charcoal\, pastels\, conte\, and enamel. \nHarpist Kathryn McConnell will also play beautiful music to welcome you in on Saturday from 10:30AM – 12:30PM\, and on Sunday from 1:00 – 3:00PM. \nThere is no admission fee to view the artists’ works\, and admission to the Museum will be free all weekend long. \nLearn more about the L & A Studio Tour here.
